troll and spam threads so that they just die quietly, shamed into oblivion?

Those posts are only made to get attention or go for the shock factor. Any reply, good or bad keeps the posts on the front page, getting more attention. To them, any post is a good post. It's just a reward for them. The more attention they get on a thread, the more likely it is that there will be more threads like it. Either because they think it's funny and want to do it again, or because others see it and want to do it too. Just report and then turn your backs on them and let the mods handle it. That's the quickest way to get rid of them.

Or am I the only one that actually wants that? It seems that whenever a troll/spam thread pops up there are always a fair share of "u r a legend!!!" posts on them and I just...sigh

Agreed 100%. FRD is so meme-y that even spam posts are treated as real posts. It's tiring if you like actual discussion.

They know it's bad. They want people to react. Telling them is just feeding into it. Also yeah, there's not much point in telling them it's reported. They're probably laughing behind the screen. You're not wrong, it's pointless to interact (especially in the case of gibberish threads). I think sometimes people don't realize that it's spam, though, because a lot of the responses are just confused, or trying to figure out how they can help. I don't mind those responses, and it's not bad to have like one or two responses pointing out that it's spam, but pages and pages of interaction is just plain unnecessary.

imo it's best that someone just pings the mods, have only a few people to meme it and abandon it. report it instead.

why the memes? people are just repeating stuff, and they can just laugh at those first posts. it's pointless to just repeat inb4 x / lets get the popcorn, etc. all the time.

If you can't get rid of them you might as well capitalize on the moment of fame. That and recently online culture has moved into a very black and white mentality. If you do nothing about it you're 'bad' for indifference/no action, so people feel the need to point out the fact they did indeed act and are therefore better than the people that did nothing.
