FIXES AND IMPROVEMENTS
I tried to avoid changing the survey’s questions too much to avoid throwing off the data, but I made several mistakes and improvements throughout the process. Luckily, most were fixed early on. These are the changes I made that had an impact on data:
- Baldwin question originally only went up to lv. 24, fixed by response #99
- added 101-150, 151-200, 201-250, and 251+ options to permadragon question by #102; previously only went up to 71-100.
- changed Roundsey’s questions to be more vague in the interest of anonymity, somewhere in between #113-#173
- added missing Streak (Gaoler) to gene questions between #124-#148
- added “Other” option to income question by #50
- added 20,001+ option to exalting question by #29
The overall data for the Baldwin and Roundsey questions is a little weird due to these changes. Sorry about that. :(
ACKNOWLEDGING POTENTIAL BIASES
There are a few things to consider while looking at this data. I’ll try to keep it quick. I am not good enough at analyzing statistics to try to figure out the exact numbers, if it's even possible, so these are just my thoughts.
*Forum Use
Users who spend time on the forums represent the vast majority of responses. The survey was only posted by me here and on the Friend Rising Discord. Users who don’t frequent the forums are less represented by the data. This may affect the responses to the following questions:
- How often do you check Flight Rising?
- How much time do you spend on the site?
- How many forum posts have you made?
- What do you enjoy most about Flight Rising?
*Banescales
They are relatively new and making their way through the userbase, so they are still extremely popular. The same thing happened with Nocturnes in the 2015 census, but it’s too early to tell how much this affected the breed results (if at all).
FEEDBACK
Some things to be improved on:
- Bestiary question should have had benchmarks accounting for the scarcity of sprites, KS familiars, and the Boolean, instead of going straight from 700-782 to 783. (I realized this about 500 responses too late. RIP)
I can’t guarantee I’ll ever be running a survey like this again; however, if anyone else wishes to repurpose it, please do! That’s why I’ll be putting some of the feedback up here, so people have access to it if they want it for themselves.

-Some flight sizes were proportionate to the number of responses, while others were not.

-Bee is the mostly widely loved gene, while Hypnotic and Crackle are the most widely disliked.
-More respondents have had an egg drop in the Coliseum than a Boss familiar.
-Almost half of respondents have never changed flights.
-Roughly 25% of respondents requested pings for results.

It may seem tedious to go over the written responses at the end (available in the spreadsheet), but personally, I enjoyed reading them immensely as they present insights and personal experiences you can’t glean from statistics.
If you don’t have the time or interest, though, I’ve collected the most frequent answers to the last question. This list is not based on raw data analysis, just observation.

I was commenting on not seeing Streak on the list for favorite secondary genes! It might have been added by now, though. :D I don't want to check and accidentally take it twice. It was a good survey!
