TOPIC | I gotta question bout the Coli familiars
So what exactly is the deal in-universe with how they're acquired?
Is it some sorta Shonen-esque 'you have defeated me so now we're bffs' or are my dragons just like knocking them out and taking them back home?

Runic Bat Spectral Duskflapper Cursed Bat Armored Duskflapper Spirit of Shadow
Both.

Maybe they’re like “oh hey you’re strong take care of me I’m lazy.” or something.

Edit: I changed it from bold to strike through like I wanted it to be.

Or you find a young one of the species and decide to raise it, possibly.

i'm pretty sure i heard somewhere that the canon is the first, but you're free to other hcs. especially if you consider familiars found in hunting and gathering. go with whatever you like!

What concerns me is when the drop items associated with the familiar clearly can't be acquired without killing it. If I'm fighting a single thunderstomp, how do I get both a rhinohide and also a living thunderstomp? The math just doesn't add up.

I think the canon reason is something like: all the coli monsters have been taken over by the shade and you defeating them is knocking the shade out of them. The ones that come home are just happy and thankful they're not shady anymore.

Can someone else confirm or deny? I can't remember where I heard this.
Yep, certain familiars are considered Shade-possessed. Stuff like Leafy Moths and other non-sentient ones. Undel posted about it before the Beastclan update, but mentioned that for creatures like Longnecks that wasn't the case. I assume with the Beastclans, they're joining you for a variety of reasons. Some are being captured, some joining you because you're strong, some coming with the intention of spying. Lots of lore potential! UPDATE: Exact quote:
Headcanon welcome, but lorewise this is what's going on: The local flora and fauna doesn't naturally have magic. That ability is something innate to dragons, and can be honed and practiced by the sentient races with great difficulty. You're actually demolishing a bunch of mimicked and shade-possessed critters. Every once in a while you can rescue and befriend a real one. :) The sentient races are there fighting both the shadelings and dragons. Occasionally they may decide you're a worthwhile companion. ;-)
Imagining familiars being towards the dragons, "If you cannot defeat them, join them."

It probably depends on the familiar's intelligence. If it's a wild animal, then your dragons probably just capture it against its will. If it's something intelligent like a Beastclan warrior, they probably surrendered and just decided to stay with your clan.

Some, like the centaurs are canonically dragon buddies. Till the alliances between dragon and centaurs caused lots of centaur infighting and some got angry about that.

you can read about them in the beastclan encyclopedia entries.

and others are shade-touched
