TOPIC | when is a hatchling decided? (game mech)
i have no idea how to word this

as in, both nests and g1 eggs. would the dragon inside be determined upon the egg's creation, or upon its hatching?

i'm just genuinely curious to know. the only differences i can think of would be in slightly longer loading times for nest results/egg hatching respectively, which tbh means nothing.

(it's not like a game like pokemon, which uses the predetermined method, albeit on a system of the eggs are determined long before being created, like a list, which i've seen players exploit through resetting to essentially identify rare eggs and hatch only those eggs, saving lots of time.)

in fr, such a thing is impossible legitimately, thus there'd be no danger in that happening. so i'm just interested to hear if anyone happens to know when the game decides on a hatchling- maybe somebody's measured average hatch times vs nest loading times, or something?

look at me nerding out. i apologise. i'm tired, and i want to know.

It's determined upon hatching. From what I understand, it's similar to how Pokémon does it, with a seed that's constantly changing by the microsecond (drawing in various bits of device data including time to get your hatch result.)

I stopped playing Pokémon at gen 5, but IIRC, outside of some of the gen 3 games (where some of the random numbers were predictable at your game start and would always be the same sequence), it was two sets of random numbers, your trainer ID, and your hidden ID. I don't know FR's formula, but I remember hearing that it ran on the same principle.

TLDR, if you sell an egg to someone and they end up hatching a triple, you don't have to cry about losing the triple, because if you'd hatched it, it wouldn't have been those colors.

cant find the exact quote but I believe a staff member said before that colors and genes are determined on the exact moment of hatching an egg?

@Laluzi @Lilydew oh, cool! thanks, that's always a fun bit of knowledge to have!

@Falinks It's definitely determined at the time of hatching. Many years back, there was a rollback where tons of data was lost and our accounts "went back in time". I had hatched specific colors, but after the rollback, I got different hatchlings.

A lot of people were upset about the rollback and the devs have made great efforts not to do another rollback.

@Sylvandyr not gonna lie, that sounds cool in a way, to have everyone's hatchlings change colours. i get that it isn't, of course, but still.

and i mean now i reflect on it, it's probably a lot easier for the site, to stop it having to carry so much data on hatchlings around constantly

Also a lot of people were asking that question around the time the color wheel was updated. A ton of people saved nests for MONTHS without hatching them so that they could get new colors from a specific pair on release day.

That would explain why you can't gene a nesting dragon, then.

The nesting function requires the parents' genetic information to hatch the eggs, and so you simply can't change it until that nest is hatched.
