golly gosh, gourds!
On Dragon Ownership:

Exploiting our policy
Attempting to exploit this policy for personal gain is also considered harassment.

Example: A player uses an 'adoption' thread for free "exalt fodder" or dragons to sell. This goes against the spirit of the thread/trade.
Example: A player uses an 'adoption' thread for the purpose of upsetting the gifting players by exalting the gifted dragon.

I haven't had that kind of experience but if it was someone that seemed to be consistently taking advantage of free gifts just to make money I'd probably just report them and let staff investigate.

People like this absolutely exist... the problem is often that the things they do aren't reportable in isolation, only together, which means building a case to ban their sorry butts is harder, administration takes longer to respond because it's harder to sort them out from normal non-cases like "I gave this dragon as a gift and then they exalted it", and because it's harder to spot the wrongdoing unless you start following that person's activity. There's a lot of users out there, so you can shop for newbie gift packs from a lot of people (then send them to a holding account so nobody goes 'hey, why do you need a level 25 when you have 9 already') before anyone cottons on.

Opinions, though? Nobody likes these people. Swindlers and scammers are generally not a cheered-on group. People might disagree how against the rules it is, but everyone will agree it's scummy.

And it's not really something you can do by accident... everyone knows lying to get people's goodwill is wrong. Things like 'I didn't know it was rude to ask for free stuff' can be honest mistakes. Things like 'I didn't know it was wrong to ask you and twenty other people for a level 25 so I could fight in the coliseum, then sell those dragons for hot cash' are not mistakes. The person can become better, sure. People trying to claim it was an accident? A sure sign that they haven't yet.

That's actually a problem with FR's players more than it is the newbies... we're so desperate to have anyone keep our babies that we throw them at anyone with space. When we give newbies dragons (that aren't inherently valuable, like gened g1s or statted & stoned), they're doing us a favor just as much as we're doing them one... and newbies don't have a great sense of just how limited account space is and just how many dragons are out there to collect. It's not a problem if you don't mind where the free dragon ends up, but when people expect somebody to cherish the dragon they sent them forever, it's unrealistic. You've gotta do what you've gotta do, and that welcoming present might be outside your lair aesthetic or your least favorite of 40/40 dragons or just plain ugly. You're not beholden to the person who sent it over. Same is true with the adoption threads, really. If you own a dragon for five months and decide that it's just not your thing - it had a good run, and you used the thread the way it was supposed to be used. As long as you're not deciding 'actually I don't want it' eight hours later... every time you visit the thread... you're totally fine.

Imma say dis,
I think most will agree
There is nothing wrong with exalting/selling
A free boi
But i think a lot of peeps agree that u shouldn’t, but that does NOT mean you shouldn’t

I agree that you can expect everyone to not exalt/sell
Cuz some peeps just sell cuz, liek u said, they dont have enough lair space

I personally dont sell/exalt free dergs-
Its not cuz i think its wrong, it bcuz in a serious hoarder, everytime i expand my lair its filled up with new DERGS that i buy on the AH
So ye
Idk
AAAA

Well, begging for treasure is pretty annoying bc literally anyone can grind Glimmer and Gloom for under an hour and make 75k every day :0

As for selling/exalting free things... I mean, if it's been so long since you got it that you literally don't remember that it was free (like I recently logged back on after a year of inactivity and wasn't sure where like the whole last page of my lair came from), nobody can blame you for getting rid of it however you see fit. But if it's two hours since you scooped the dragon up from a free gift thread and now you're selling it, that seems pretty scummy to me.

Same with grabbing dragons from gift threads that specifically ask not to exalt, and then immediately exalting them. Yes, technically that's a thing you can do, but again I think it's scummy to deliberately go against the poster's wishes.

Especially if you keep doing it. That's pretty uncool.

Every other adoptable site I've been on has rules against begging and mailing multiple people chain garbage where they beg for whatever.

I have no idea why FR allows it.

I used to give items like apparel or familiars away to people since there is no "I ran out of space" thing that happens with dragons.
But more often then not, someone wouldn't say a simple thank you.
The ones that did say thank you often just sold, auctioned or traded the item immediately. Couldn't even wait a week for me to forget about them but since they forgot about me even faster....

It’s pretty rude to take advantage of people’s kindness by profiting off of free dragons or items. Nothing wrong with exalting a dragon you got for free, but it’s wrong to continuously take free dragons with the intent to immediately exalt. Those people will always be around though :( I think sometimes, the good parts of giving to a person who really wanted something and will be grateful for it overcome the chance of giving it to somebody who’s only going to take advantage of the gift.
