the q&a on skydancer orbs not having an official name yet got me thinking a little. i don't have any suggestions on what they should be called (feel free to add your own if you want), but what i was thinking was that they sure do look an awful lot like a parietal eye. it's a vestigial third eye possessed by most lizards and some species of fish, amphibian, and some other non-mammalian vertibrates and is especially well-developed in tuataras. it's extremely simple and can't sense much more than simple changes in light level. so what i'm thinking is, the skydancer orb is a parietal eye with a bony protective coating, that somehow evolved to see magic signatures rather than light. ..... maybe a small number of pearlcatchers see skydancers as being the closest to their equals out of the rest of dragonkind because they have something that looks like a pearl embedded in their heads?

I kind of like calling them 'emblems,' but that bit of anatomical reverse-engineering is really neat and I absolutely support the vestigial magic eyespot idea.

Dracontites, from the belief in mythology/folklore that dragons had healing gemstones in their heads.

The names I thought of first were Cephalostone or Cephalopearl, coming from the latin root Cephalo meaning head. Can't believe I didn't think of reptiles' parietal eyes!

Parietal Pearl sounds like something that would be in this game.
