every once in a while i see threads like this one talking about possible lore ideas for gene and breed changes and i'm curious about the general response to that kind of thing? what i mean is i always disregard gene and breed scrolls in my lore. a finished dragon is just what they were born looking like, whether that's true in terms of game mechanics or not. for example, this guy was born with a hex secondary but i changed it to shimmer. in my lore, he's just always had shimmer

i usually ignore it unless i think it’ll make a cool story. i don’t pay much attention to g1 status or actual age either.... unless it adds something, again, lol

@apocellipse yeah same it's just not something i pay attention to! my 2016 permas from before my hiatus are consistently older in lore than my newer dragons but i usually just disregard most of the site mechanics ehehe

I have breed changes all over in my lore. My main clan leaders were a trio of Guardian sisters, and two of them changed to a Skydancer and Pearlcatcher for personal reasons. Other than scrolls, which are commonplace, things like curses, mutations and magi-genetic experiments also are reasons why changes happen.

This guy has a combination of breed change scroll and genetic gene mutation happening.

Mine is just that alchemists can learn how to change a dragon's appearance (or breed entirely) and weave that magic into a scroll that can be read by whoever wanted the scroll.
Some scrolls are heavily regulated because some dragons/shade masquerading as a dragon use them to avoid being caught and is why some cost more than others.

I only have two dragons (these two) who's breed changes are major parts of their lore because Ifor used to be a tundra, but became a gaoler after they were rediscovered. Valkyrie also became a gaoler after being a tundra because she was inspired by Ifor.

The only exception to what apoc said is probably the breed-change scrolls. Since my lair is going to eventually be mainly g1s, I'll be basing my lore on their lineage and how lucky/unlucky they are to have been given the option to switch breeds.

I usually ignore it unless it already has lore somewhere else. Gembond, for example, is a deadly disease as well a a gene!

Sometimes a breed change lets me do fun things with a character's story. I have a Ridgeback who came with lore indicating he had once been a Guardian, and chosen to become a Ridgeback so that he could better protect his Charge. When he came to me, though, the other dragon did not. So I had a once-Guardian Ridgeback who had lost his Charge. I took that and ran with it, making him Ridgeback enough to not grieve himself to death, but Guardian enough to have a tendency to take shy or troubled dragons under his wing, and feel fiercely responsible for helping them.

Then there's Lobsneaks, who was breedchanged back when that caused a profound sizing glitch. Now he's a teeny tiny Bogsneak with a lot of sympathy for small creatures in a dragon's world. :P

I rarely do breed changes in my lair, as I'm personally not that big into regening projects.

I tend to ignore it when I change primary or secondary or tert genes, but when I DO breed change, well, then it's part of the lore.

My best example is Julliet, a fae who so loved alchemy she turned into a bodgsneak.

I also like to look at dragon's lineages and give them mild tendencies and appearance shifts based on the other breed that went into their birth.
For example Sully's dad is a guardian dragon, so he has a beard, capable of facial expression, and obsessively cares for his familiar (as if it were a charge)

Yeah, in most cases I typically view gene changes as not part of my lore and just a dragon being born that way. Breed changes, well, it depends - my first two Gaolers, Kao and Chloroform, had their breed changes is a part of their lore.

Kao was a Tundra who wanted to explore the secrets of the Ancients, and when the technology to turn him into an Ancient was discovered, he did so. Chloroform was originally a Mirror, and the inspiration to turn him into a Gaoler came from observing Kao. Unfortunately for him, it didn't go so well and he's a bit cursed now.

Regarding forum games, please only select dragons who have familiars - those are the permanent residents of my lair. Feel free to look through the hibernal den, too
