This time it's an important edit before even the main thing. Hi, sorry for that, but you have to excuse me this one time. I would like to clarify that the point of this thread is not complaining about the artists not joining contests, nor demanding everyone who can draw do join. It was made in hopes to understand the situation better and maybe to brainstorm how to improve it. While not perfect, Skin & Accent Contests were here from the begining and are still a big part of the Elemental Holidays that many people look up to and it's disheartening to see how they're going down. I will let myself quote an user's post on this thread that gets my point across pretty well. And my reply to it, because I'm too lazy to rephrase it nicely. [br]
I once asked the devs, on the ask the team, what would happen if noone were to upload an entry for a festival. Sadly I didn't get an answer.

This is exactly what I'm worried about. Would they simply stop with the contests? While half of the actual fest hype is the skins? I honestly can't see how this would work unless the general formula of the whole festivals is revamped.
Now let's get to the meat and potatoes of this thread. [br] ----- Hello all! For the couple years I've been playing Flight Rising, I've started feeling like each fest we get less and less entries for the Elemental Skink & Accent Contests. Why would that be? With the open registration and the site growing in userbase, you'd think there would be more and more people willing to take part in the celebrations. To check if I'm not just imagining things, I've taken on the quest to hunt down all the contest submission threads and take numbers from them to put in a handy dandy spreadsheet. Here it is. The numbers in the cells are the numbers of PAGES on the submission threads. Not submission themselves. I'm not bored enough to count those. Please click on the image to view a bigger version. The numbers marked with red are the number of the LEAST entries for that spyfic fest. That's why 16, for example, is marked as red for Crystalline Gala, but not Riot of Rot. Because for RoR, there was even less entries at some point. I marked them so it's easier to see that this season of Elemental Holidays is doing the worst so far, number of entries wise. * For the first Brightshine Jubilee and Thundercrack Carnivale there were no separate submissions and discussions threads. That's why the numbers are higher than in any other fest. Because it's a mash of both actual entries and comments. As you can see, the numbers are going down over the time. There are more entries here and there in betweem - I assume it's caused by stuff like registration window being open and more people joined, or there was a cool update that got people to return to the game, whatever really. You can see that some of the elements were doing poorly from the very begining, like Wind. And ones that started badly only to get more popular, like Shadow. Whatever other conclusions you may draw from this, it is a FACT that Elemental Holidays, or at least the Skin & Accent Contests are losing on the popularity. Why might that be? Even though we have more users than ever who could participate? Some of the reasons I can only assume:

people are getting bored of how the festivals in general are structured in general, with no interesting activities but just endless grind for currency,
the grind isn't even all that profitable anymore since items no longer retire for good and some people gave up on that aspect as well,
the well is running dry on thematic idea and people don't want to be accused of plagiarism because their idea was vauguely similar to one someone submitted in 2013,
plagiarism accussations happened in the past and it does discourage potential participants
i would like to clarify one thing. with "the quality of skins dropping" I don't mean the art itself, but rather the selection process - simple and repeating themes are being chosen over more detailed and unique designs,
how the winners are drawn by the Staff rather than a popularity among the players. more people are dissatisfied with the winners rather than excited and thus don't care to get the skins at all,
Stuff brought to my attention by the users commenting on this thread:

the community itself may be very discouraging to the artists. they are sometimes being harassed about their entries (winning or not) outside of Flight Rising website. I'm honestly super happy y'all are discussing this and that my effort into putting the spreadsheet together (it was hell) wasn't for nothing.

Whatever other conclusions you may draw from this, it is a FACT that Elemental Holidays, or at least the Skin & Accent Contests are losing on the popularity. Why might that be? Even though we have more users than ever who could participate?

Some of the reasons I can only assume:
 • people are getting bored of how the festivals in general are structured in general, with no interesting activities but just endless grind for currency,
 • the grind isn't even all that profitable anymore since items no longer retire for good and some people gave up on that aspect as well,
 • the well is running dry on thematic idea and people don't want to be accused of plagiarism because their idea was vauguely similar to one someone submitted in 2013,
 • plagiarism accussations happened in the past and it does discourage potential participants
 • i would like to clarify one thing. with "the quality of skins dropping" I don't mean the art itself, but rather the selection process - simple and repeating themes are being chosen over more detailed and unique designs,
 • how the winners are drawn by the Staff rather than a popularity among the players. more people are dissatisfied with the winners rather than excited and thus don't care to get the skins at all,

Stuff brought to my attention by the users commenting on this thread:
 • the community itself may be very discouraging to the artists. they are sometimes being harassed about their entries (winning or not) outside of Flight Rising website.
 • and the on-site discussion about questionable winners and comparisons are often just mean rather than constructive and helpful in any way,
 • the prize for winning is not adequate to the amount of work put into creating a skin/accent,

what unfinished winner? i needta see this

i mean, i dunno. one thing i will put in here, is a lot of winners have a similar theme. if i draw back onto a point that massively annoyed me, some ice winners... uh, well, there's a lot of winners which are just 100%/95% fullbody plain ice. from 2014 to this year.
if i'd put loads of time and effort into a well-liked accent only to see it flat-out lose to a (from what i know of) unpopular and overused design, sure, i'd feel that going away from the base ideas and being creative obviously isn't what staff was looking for. so i'd hawk my creations as umas off the bat, instead of bothering to enter them in a contest i'd feel as if i'd never win.

I don't think there's been any corresponding drop in quality of selected skins though, and I've seen people comment that overall skin quality has improved since the first year. It may be the skin makers are taking more time on fewer submission per year or something similar since they've noticed the rising bar for quality?

Yeah, a lot of things factor in this. Would love to see a survey made for this honestly.

If there are players who are having a hard time creating skins/accents that follow the rules, then maybe devs can just copy and paste the rules from the encyclopedia rules page, with both text and images? Its a lot harder to notice when its a link surrounded with text and lore things that most players already know and ignore.

Or they could give some kind of feedback to what disqualifies the entry, so that the artist has another chance of fixing it. like 'your entry affects the outline of the dragon.' or 'this accent covers more than whatever% of the dragon'.

Also, you shouldn't worry too much for plagiarising ideas for this. For example: if someone had already made a guardian skin covered in plants, its ok to make another dragon breed covered in plants. A lot of players say that they love a skin/accent but wish it was for a different breed. You cannot expect only one breed of dragon with one gender to have a skin with a certain look/theme.

Honestly, I'm glad I'm not the only one that noticed this.

I think Falinks above me gave a good point - in my eyes, the more unique skins and such don't usually get picked. The Crystalline Gala I think is a good example: there were a number of submissions that weren't just straight up snow/ice themed, and yet we ended up with a few chosen skins being along that theme. I get it, it is the Ice flight, but there were still some great submissions that made it a bit more unique that didn't get chosen, and I think that discourages people a lot when they put in that effort to try and stand out, and it gets them nowhere. If I hadn't got swept up with the fact I'd never been online for the Ice fest before, I probably wouldn't have bothered with getting most of the skins. If there was art issues with the submissions, then maybe staff could clarify why the skins don't qualify as well? Might help the artists fix their submissions.

No hate to the winners of the skin contests of course! They were all excellent entries, all very beautiful! I just wished for a bit more variety, like the Snow-Crow Thicket skin on the very first page, I really dig that.

I think the lack of structure to fests as well might be off putting to some? To be fair, I'm sure there's a lot going on in the forums, like user-held mini events and games within fests, but for someone like me who isn't very active in the forums, it's just grinding and buying the fest items. It might be putting people off fests overall. Just my thoughts! Not hate to the devs or anything.

honestly i kinda agree with some of what's been said re: reused ideas. the theme for the festival skins hasn't changed in six years. you say 'make a skin for shadow flight' you're gonna get goop, mushrooms and brambles. plus some trickster card/ circus skins. and there are only so many ways to spin that before people are recycling. it'd be really cool to see the guidelines for each festival expand.

some of the winners that are outliers are really neat imo. like the feathered ice one and the plague one based on vultures. and we went through a bit of a festival phase a few years back where every fest we had an "elemental skeleton" skin which was neat but yeah. a bit more variety and a widening of the themes would be great for creativity. shrug

//Insert SpongeBob "Boi" meme in here// SO, were do we even begin? Because we have SO MANY reasons the festivals are going down in popularity. Ok, so here are some reasons I personally lost interesting in them. 1. The admins are very, very specific in their taste in skins that "make the cut". And I don't mean in the official rules of the contest, since I think the rules are pretty fair. I mean, they always chose the exact same thing every year. They always pick stuff that is colorful, more cartoony looking, and at times even "child friendly" to say so. They almost never chose things that user darker colours sets, a more realistic art style, logical designs or darker themed desigs. Hence why we often see accents/skins that you could swear you already owned/won last year. Its almost the same thing every year. This creates frustration not only towards the user base in general that is not really into the colorful more cartoony art style, but its also a big reason for artists that don't fit that art style to not bother anymore. 2. Fights among the artists with similar designs. Now this is not too often, but still happens enough to be noticed. You will see similar-ish designs getting accused of plagiarism, especially if they were submited days apart. Even if, in 99% of cases, its not true at all. IDK about you but if I was an artist that had to always have print screens ready to show the date and time I created my art not to be hunted by the angry mob, I would hardly have any enthusiasm left for the event. 3. This one will offend some people, but I don't care. The admins no longer chose the best artworks. They chose acceptable quality yes, but I would say they chose the "middle" between great and bad. Why? So people will invents buy gems and buy the trully amazing ones from the other artists. A very shady practise if you ask me. At least it comes in the favour of the better artists. Its pretty much the only silver linging. That is IF people bother to look at the contest page. Which I know many actually don't. Unless you are like me and you think custom/rare skins/accents are pure gold for your den. 4. Some skins, don't even fit the theme. You will often see plague accents/skins that actually look more nature like. Or things that don't fit at all. Here is the biggest example of what I mean. This is Cromatic Predator, an accent that won nature fest in 2018: Do I think its a well done accent art wise? For sure! The vibrant colours and the way they blend are very nicely done. BUT, this has nothing to do with the theme of nature. It actually looks like gasoline in water, or man made paint. If this a user made accent for people that love wild colours I would hold no issue. But as something that has nothing to do with the official theme of the contest? How can you not get mad? 5. This one is no one's fault, just a natural result, but it did have a negative impact regardless. Fest objects are hardly worth hoarding/selling. In the past fest items were real power house of money making, since they were rare limited objects. But since the user based grew so much, you now have a giant flood of them in the AH, so no matter how much you wait, the prices may never go up enough for you to bother to get many items and grind hard in the coli. 6. Speaking of ecomony. Some elements have the upper hand in terms of how much they are worth. If you are part of the first fests of the new familiar/apparel cicle, congrats you will probably be worth something. But if you are at the very end, your items will never be worth as much no matter how much time passes. 7. When it comes to "the yearly set" like we had lets say the hallos, its a real gamble design wise. Lets face it, some elements get more effort put into it that others and it shows. Some things are amazing and fully original while others look like already existing apparel but just redesigned to look new-ish. Which is very unfair depending on the element you are. 8. Some elements are really treated like the adopted unloved child by some very vocal users. How many times must we hear people angry commenting "plague/shadow looks gross and it upsets me!" ? Its fine if you personally don't like the core designs of an alement. I personally can't stand wind designs. But I never tell wind lovers to change the core designs of their element. I just don't interact with it! So in the last years, designs for some elements had been water down pretty badly, not to "offend" anyone. Which, its very unfair towards the silent majority that loved it the way it was before. If you can't handle the very basic of a game, please, just don't play it. 9. And the last one I promise. The fests are literary the exact thing, regardless of the element. If for every month, for 7 years, you get the exact same thing, can you even call its a special occasion anymore? It would be nice if we had seperate activities per fest to better differentiate them and create more dimanic user interactions. So yes, I do think there are many reasons for why the fests are loosing their popularity, and honestly, I think its time the game would turn a new page and create some different ways to celebrate events.
//Insert SpongeBob "Boi" meme in here//

SO, were do we even begin?

This is Cromatic Predator, an accent that won nature fest in 2018:

dummy?breed=10&gender=0&skin=26646&apparel=&xt=dressing.png

Do I think its a well done accent art wise?

Commissions & Requests

Commissions - CLOSED
Since some of you asked for it: I'll draw a single familiar/creature/Pokémon/etc.
Please keep in mind that the festival familiars will most likely arrive for their festivals. Let me know whether you want your commissioned adoptable to be free to use for everyone or not.

Requests - CLOSED
You can always make free suggestions if you want me to draw specific familiars for everyone to use. If there's enough interest and i have some spare time, i might add them as well!

i agree with like, every single point here. i'd love to see something more unique skins, and a change to the way festivals work would be great. the implementation of joxar's spare inventory crate was a great shakeup to the traditional formula, but i'd love to see something new. i'm hoping that with the map update a new mechanic can be added to shake things up, but as it stands there's too much reliance on coli and community run events.

i'd also love to see the skin/accent contest be a community vote instead of the voice of god sort of thing we have rn. i understand that since there's a lot of entries, it'd be difficult for the community to vote on them, but if there was a way to narrow down the results and allow us to vote, or narrow down the results by community interest, i think it'd help with that. like instead of entries being made on a single thread, an entry gets its own thread and it's a matter of the however many most active threads being chosen for consideration? or staff picks their favourites and we vote on them? either way, i think the skin/accent contest needs a shakeup for sure.

I will say though, while there have been more unique skins in the last couple of years, I’m pretty staff makes sure to not pick ones that seem very popular with community I suppose? So then those creators print their own skins out and staff gets some revenue from any gem sales if someone purchased gems from site for those skins.

I would totally love to be able to vote for which skins we get or heck even a theme mixup. Like this years festival will be based around x idea. So like let’s say natures festival theme will be blooming meadows themed. hgfhsh that sounds like a bad example but it kinda gets the point across. Festivals as a whole do need something new added in because it’s such a tedious task to grind out for festive currency. I’d love to have maybe joxar offer out some tasks like the hibden where you give him some items he needs, he’ll toss you some festive currency as a thanks for helping him out. And it could change daily so each day of the festival you could get something from him! hmmmmmm staff consider my ideas please haha

Edit: staff could also utilize galore? We barely get gifts from him aside from sitewide events and the occasional random gifts. He could give us an assortment of element themed items for that festival. Like not high tier items but maybe one of those dolls of the deities, some currency, maybe something flight themed trinkets? Like festivals could be expanded upon in so many ways aside from the skins problem :P
Festivals just need a whole revamp in general I suppose
