I mostly buy dragons because I like the way they look when nakie and don't usually think of putting much apparel on them, every now and then though I see a dragon on the front page with a Really Nice outfit and go "I should treat my dragons better like that!!" then I end up at the apparel page like "ok. what now" TwT
so I wanna know, how do yall go about planning those outfits?

I usually find one item or one set that matches nicely with the dragon, and kinda just add things till it looks Decent
And then I also keep in mind their profession. A blacksmith wears gloves and maybe a handkerchief. A seamstress wears a more elaborate outfit. Travelers (usually) wear light accessories.

Sometimes I start out with some specific apparel that I like and want to make something based around, then make a scry of a dragon that I think would fit it best. Then I go into the Dressing Room and then start looking for matching color items that fit the look.
That's how I ended up with my
suit pile of dragons. I liked all of them, so I went and made things that would go with them in different ways.

Personally I start by thinking about how the dragon may be like, lorewise. From there it's usually one or two pieces that would work, so I slap those on in the dressing room and build an outfit from there, moving out to see what might look good and what might fit their story.
If they have no lore, then use any piece or two that fit the colors and build from there
First I throw on a TON of my favorite items-- candles, seraph jewelry, taildecor, pendants, necklaces, sylvan if I'm feeling it, flowerfalls, seasonal winds, tail rings, cobwebs, etc. -- and then I go to an
Apparel Catalog and throw things on that I think might match! Also, I stack different colors of the same apparel pieces to determine my favorite one.
And it never hurts to take inspiration from some people! I mean, some people don't like copying because they create personal outfits tailored to personal dragons, but look around your favorite lairs and see what pieces are constantly reused, and build from that.

Slap on random apparel that looks good with the dragon. Mission accomplished.
I buy them for their unclothed looks too, and don't often plan outfits for non-fandragons-- my Arcane rep is an exception, but otherwise I just browse up cheap apparel and open bonding chests, then throw together whatever's in my inventory that looks good on the dragon.

TheCrystalRose here is wearing the leftovers of the Lovely Seraph set I bought for DaughterOfStars (aforementioned rep), plus stuff I got out of Iron and Gilded chests, and it worked out like a charm.

Archangel, I stuck the vest on first because it worked with her wings, then the trident worked with the vest and the shroud with the trident straps.

LightOfSunset, brown birdskull matched all three of her browns perfectly, then the treeshroud happened to be the exact same teal as her primary's accent!
None of these outfits were planned in the slightest. So my advice would be to just build up a big selection of cheap apparel first.

I start with a color or theme, usually both, and go ham.
