How do you guys sell your dragons at 30+ gems ?
And not have all your babies auto exalted.

I have to admit, I recently had a run of 28 babies, and all but 3 were exalted.
It shouldn't bother me, but it does.
It is more than a little bit disheartening.

I know there are always going to be be those exalted, but it seems there are more exalters than not lately.

I know I know "Don't sell them at fodder price then."
Except for the fact that they never sell if they aren't fodder price, I am not going to hold onto a dragon for a year, trying to sell it at a decent price.

I need the space, etc.

So share your secrets - how do you get people to but your dragons at higher prices.

I've tried advertising etc, with no luck.

*I am not going to breed triples. If that is all any one wants, then they'll have to buy them else where. I honestly don't get the appeal. To be honest, I find them pretty boring.

If that is the only way to garner any interest, I'll just have to cry inside every time I see a pretty baby auto exalted.

Have a particular color and gene combination I suppose.

My most popular set would likely be these ones. Which I feel work very well for the Arcane theme. Not that they sell instantly most of the time, but eventually.

currently theres a dom battle so theres a higher chance of dragons being exalted, and theres just so many dragons, someone could go buy a pretty at fodder price instead of spending 50g on a similar one

weird that they got exalted if they were 30g+, its possibly buyers regret though

If you frequently hatch nests full of dragons you think look pretty, you should maybe do an interest check and see if people would be interested if you started up a hatchery.

The problem is that dragons aren't worth that much. Unless you're breeding dragons with brand new genes, or dragons with interesting and unique aesthetics, I could probably find what you're selling for fodder price. As long as lair space is limited and the ability to breed new dragons is unlimited, this will always be the case.

That being said, my advice for selling dragons is to breed something unique and interesting (I agree with not breeding triples, like I said dragons aren't worth much when they're super common and triples generally are), advertise (it helps! have a sales thread and bump it often, link to it in your forum siggy, maybe get some affiliates so their customers may hop over to you), and look through dragons wanted (I've sold lots of dergs in there!).

I breed a lot of fodder to store up to sell during DOM battles. If I find one especially pretty, I'll pop it on the AH for a price above what I could get for it from DOM. Then again, I don't really check to see if they've been exalted or not, and I don't really care. :p I probably sell 1 out of every 30 dragons I hatch in this way. In my experience, it's mostly only Imperials and fully gened ancients that actually sell. Every other breed is basically considered a downgrade, so people are much less willing to pay more than fodder price for them unless they have special eyes/ID etc.

Rule #1 of Selling Dragons: A dragon's value is inherently subjective. Your dragons are not precious, they're just dragons.

Rule #2: A dragon's appeal is also subjective. What you think is the most gorgeous dragon in the world can be utterly hideous to another person.

Rule #3: The key to making sales is having the right dragon at the right time for the right person. And it's a lot harder than it sounds.

Rule #4: The dragon market is a buyer's market. If you want your dragons sold for more than fodder prices, YOU must do the legwork and go to buyers, not the other way around.

Rule #5: Related to the previous rule, the Dragons For Sale subforum is NOT where you should be selling dragons. Dragons For Sale is for established hatcheries who already have an audience they can ping. The Find a Dragon subforum is where you want to be.

Rule #6: 80% of all dragons that have ever existed on FR are exalted. Like it or not, a dragon finding a perma home is uncommon. Either accept the fact that most of your dragons will be exalted or save yourself the heartbreak find a different avenue for making money.

Rule #7: There is no surefire strategy on how to sell (non-fodder) dragons 100% of the time for the prices you want. Putting in a lot of time and hard work can get you close, but even that isn't a guarantee.

That's the condensed version, if you want a more word-y version, here's my post On Selling Dragons.

really the trick is to dig into some pretty color and gene combos. look around for parents with similar colors and genes and mess around in the scrying workshop. if you really wanna get creative, themes are always fun! you can look into subspecies for inspiration, or even make your own.

if you have funds, try to get your hands on new genes or even breeds asap and sell those babies. the new ancient is likely gonna be super in-demand if we're not given eggs; being a gem breed will also make them worth a lot more.

that being said, it's really hard to consistently sell dragons for above fodder price. lair space is expensive and pretty dragons are plentiful, which makes the standard for perma dragons pretty high for a lot of users.

plus, there's a big conquest battle going on right now, so it'll be even harder to sell dragons that won't be exalted this week ;;

I do use the scry every time, and I do try to match colours.
Those are pretty much givens not secrets.
I guess it is all subjective-
but I have seen dragons very similar to mine sell at high prices, when I can't get mine to sell unless I drop prices considerably.

I'm not asking to make millions, or to sell instantly - I'd just like to sell dragons for higher then fodder, with out waiting months.

Thank you all though -
I guess the take home is I'm out of luck.

honestly sometimes they don't sell. I always have floor prices that I set offspring from certain pairs at, and if they don't sell in a week or so I exalt them. I don't like the idea of lowering their value to fodder price for any reason for certain offspring since they're nice and do have value. But at the same time I recognize that no matter how nice a dragon is, if nobody's looking for that particular color combo the hatchlings won't sell. I exalt them rather than selling them for fodder because if everyone just gave up and sold nice dragons for fodder price just to get them out of their lair it would devalue dragons even more (and believe me, dragon/color value is already a crapshoot).

Even if you do that, people can buy dragons at a high price intending to make them permanent members of their lair, and just get tired of them in a few weeks/months/years and exalt them for lair space. There's no way to ensure they have a truly permanent home. Most dragons end up exalted at some point, like it or not.
Personally it doesn't bother me one bit, I like to think of it as some sort of weird circle of life. Dragons are born, they grow, they are exalted. The money they are exalted for is used to buy more dragons, and the cycle repeats.
