i'm board letsa go (please don't use these to get around censors)

inter-flight:

• baku-snout: dangit (baku-snout, i think i missed.)
• shade: dangit (ow- shade.)
• shade-born: insult towards parentage or heritage (you stupid shade-born!)
• shaded: danged (i don't wanna go to that shaded place. it's awful!)
• janustrap: dangit (janustrap! i worked so hard on that!)

lightning:

• short: dangit; to mess up. from short-circuiting (man you really shorted, huh?)
• sparked: to mess up. from sparks caused by failures (yeah, i started sparking and just abandoned ship)
• Boss: blaspheming. from the shorter name for the Stormcatcher (i swear to Boss if you touch my black tulips-)
• scrap: trash. from the term for nonfunctioning materials. (this looks like scrap)
• glassed: to mess up. from the formation of glass under or around unplanned explosions. (oh wow, you really glassed it huh.)

light:

• blinding: extremely good. (that went blindingly!)
• dim: to mess up. (this was my big chance, and i dimmed!)
• crescent-born: a failure. (she's a crescent-born, we all know it.)

shadow:

• blinding: extremely good. (that was blinding!)
• glow: to mess up (i'm gonna glow, i know it.)
• hewn-born: an outcast; a snitch. (that hewn-born idiot should keep their nose out of it!)
• Shadow-chaser: a stupid or easily fooled dragon – AKA one that's easy to prank by making weird shapes in the dark. (Did they actually fall for it? What a shadow-chaser!) (thanks to @Jhortanas)

nature:

• rot: an extremely grave swear (go rot!)
• bloom: to flourish. (she bloomed as soon as they met.)
• ripen: (of hatchlings) to come of age (he's ripened so quickly! he was so small last i visited)
• lost in the labyrinth: {1} crazy (ever since the accident she's been lost in the labyrinth) {2} go to heck (go get lost in the labyrinth for all i care!)
• spread like weeds: to spread quickly. used instead of "spread like wildfire", although that is occasionally used for something destructive.

  • Chive: someone helpful or useful. (be a chive and help me clean up?]
  • goldenrods: refers to luck. (goldenrods for your search!)
  • dendron: something dangerous or with bad vibes. not what it seems. from the rhododendron. (he's a total dendron. don't trust him.)
  • Sage: advice. (here's some sage: don't go near the lake at night.)
  • with the willows: sad or depressed, reference to weeping willows. (yeah, they're really with the willows right now. i think they're starting a black tulip patch in there)
  • Larkspur: someone arrogant and full of themselves. (what a larkspur! all he does is brag about his new glimmer.)
  • Petunias: equivalent to "dangit."
  • Tansy/tansied: disgusted or feeling ill. (i never should have gone on that ride. i feel so tansy...)
  • Zinnia: someone you used to know and have fallen out of contact with, but still hold sentiment for. (i guess you two are zinnias now, huh? maybe you should send her a letter.)
  • Hollyhock: someone who's overambitious. (slow down, hollyhock. that's a bit much for one dragon, don't you think?)
  • Morning glory: an early riser. (the sun's hardly up, how are you such a morning glory?)
  • Peacevine: a night owl. (by not being a peacevine instead of sleeping.)
  • Gladekeeper's beard: equivalent to "mother of God."

plague:

• rot: blaspheming (oh rot, please don't do that!)
• surviving: (of hatchlings) to come of age (they've survived so well! they have so many more scars since i saw them)
• pack: family. from the mirror tendency to travel in packs. (sorry, my pack said no.)
• drown in the wound: {1} crazy (she drowning in the wound in her old age now, poor thing.) {2} go to heck (drown in the wound you jerk!)
• Gone to the serpents: A Plague flight term meaning something's been abandoned or lost. Comes from the Shattered Serpent population that tends to quickly devour abandoned Mirror camps. (Oh, that old house? It's gone to the serpents now.) (thanks to @/Jhortanas)
• to go viral: to spread quickly. (how did we know? the news went viral! everyone knows!) (thanks to @huskies709)
  • "spread like a virus" is far more common in plague than "spread like wildfire"
• sick: extremely good. it's not uncommon to add something like "as a rose in the wyrmwound" or similar (your new secondary looks sick!) (thanks to @Amayai)

ice:

• locked in the ends/fortress: to heck. (get locked in the ends, traitor!)
• to stink: to be a jerk. fighting words. from the tundra tendency to refer to drakes who smell like a foe as smelling foul. (looking for trouble, stinky?)
• frozen: trapped. (they had me frozen in the kitchen for the whole Gala!)
• Banescale hunt: Wild goose chase – Ice flight term, meaning looking for something that isn't there. Has fallen out of use recently for obvious reasons. (You're still looking for your glasses? I'm pretty sure this is a Banescale hunt.) (thanks to @/Jhortanas)
• Warden: a form of blaspheming, both a reference to the Icewarden and to the wardens of the fortress of ends. (oh warden, what now?) (thanks to @kimnoodles)

fire:

• locked in the ends/fortress: to heck.
• slag: trash. from the byproduct of smelting. (this is a pile of slag) (thanks to @fishes)
• *a specific sour note*: it's not clear what exactly this means but it's really really rude. it's possible different sour notes are different insults. coatls and banescales have difficulty explaining the meaning.
• temper: to improve. (she tempered her work to perfection!)
• furnace: paradise. (it was like my own personal furnace!)
• pale: ill. from coatls tendency to become pale in colour when sick (i was pale last week, but i'm doing much better!)
• melt: to do poorly under pressure. (deadlines are coming up. make sure you don't melt.)

water:

• murky: stupid, slow. (he's a little murky, give him some time.)
• in the trench: completely unknown. (i swear, i don't where it went. it's in the trench.)
• to curse or insult a charge: an extremely grave insult. from the reverence awarded to a guardian's charge. can be adapted to insult non guardians. (i bet your charge would hate you.)

  • Tidaled: Relating to the Tsunami Flats, Protected/Guarded (Did you make sure the food's tidaled?)
  • Reefed: Grievously raked/clawed, similar to wounds from running into a reef, ("Ouch! Poor angler got reefed!")
  • Trench: Who knows? (See below)
  • Fall: To go deeper, often irreversibly ("He fell. Trench knows what happened to him.")
  • Twilight/Abyss: Something that is impossible to retrieve or know ("For all we know, Tidelord's in the twilight now")
  • Abyssal/Trenched/Twilighted: Eldritch, beyond the Tidelord's domain, ("Whatever's in the Fishspine Reef is abyssal.")
  • Twilighter: a denizen of the Leviathan Trench/creepy ("She's creepy, but so are all the other Twilighters.")
  • Hindsighted: A very grave insult, saying someone cannot predict the future ("You hindsighted fool!")

arcane:

• to curse/swear on the stars: a very grave form of blaspheming. (i swear on the stars, i didn't do it.)
• break a lens: to mess up. (i tried, but i definitely broke a lens.)
• *a very very specific orientation of frills*: this is a very grave swear that is difficult to learn to replicate if one is not a natural fae or native to the starfall isles. often the source of miscommunication between natives and breed changed fae or foreigners.

  • Stargazing: to have one's head in the clouds (He's always stargazing. He almost tripped over me the other day!)
  • to shadecall: to make a horrible mistake, to screw up, to fail (During my presentation, I totally shadecalled and dropped my cue cards all over the floor!)
  • Telescoping: to be so focused on the details that you miss the big picture (Dude, you're telescoping. Stop picking a quill and start doing research.)
  • Spacing/spacing out: to zone out (Sorry, I totally spaced. What was I saying?)
  • to build a spire: to invest a lot of time and energy into something meaningless. from popular disdain for lightning engineering. (any particular reason you built this spire instead of helping me with these hatchlings?)

wind:

• when the crescendo stops spinning: akin to "when pigs fly", recently fell out of use. (sure, i'll help you. when the crescendo stops spinning!)
• falling song: abbreviation of "falling cloudsong", dangit. (falling song, that's awful.)
• knot(s): drat. from the spiral practice of tying oneself in knots. (oh knots, i forgot something.)
• spread like bamboo: to spread quickly. used instead of "spread like wildfire".
• wisphead: a forgetful dragon, a dragon with a short attention span. (hey wisphead, pay attention! this is important, so don't forget.) (thanks to @jordanosphere)
• the breeze blew it away: to be lost or forgotten (not sure where the scroll went. the breeze must've blown it away) (thanks to @FoxyCipher)

earth:

• a band: a story or tale; from the belief that bands of stone tell stories. (tell me the band again?)
• erode: [1] to forget. (you've eroded it already?) [2] to ruin (That just erodes my day...) (thanks to fishes)
• to geode: to hide in plain sight. (so i geoded the gift i got them, and they didn't even notice!)
• to sleep/to be still: to be ill. refers to snappers natural insomnia. (she was sleeping, but she's feeling so much better now!)

breed slang:

• tone-deaf: derogatory euphemism for fae, primarily used in the Ashfall Wastes. (why on sornieth would they want to be tone deaf? when are they buying the breed change?)
• burrower/borrower: term for ridgebacks, generally those that have been raised among other ridgebacks. can be considered derogatory. (did you hear a burrower clan has moved in? keep an eye on your things.)
• shucking: the practice of stealing a pearlcatcher's pearl. a very illicit trade, but not that uncommon. (he's in the Fortress of Ends now. he got caught shucking.)
• humbug: derogatory term for coatl, initially coined by fae. (great, another humbug to drum up noise complaints.)
• knot (or weave): a term for young, restless and scatterbrained dragons, particularly but not exclusively spirals. originated among spirals, but has been adopted by other breeds. (a new clan moved in, and their youngest is kind of a knot. i hope she doesn't mess with our garden.) (thanks to @/Jhortanas, this is far better than macrame!)
• mistake: derogatory term used by pearlcatchers towards imperials. (ugh, why are there so many mistakes around?)
• flawed: an insult used by imperials towards pearlcatchers. it is specifically used to refer to flaws in their pearls. (you're one to talk with a flaw like that!)
• nose: term used to refer to tundras. (there's a new nose in the clan! we should welcome them with something that smells nice.)
• alto: slang for coatl, popular in the Ashfall Wastes. (looks like mostly altos work here. that explains the humming.)
• bass: slang for banescale, popular in the Ashfall Wastes. (i didn't know a bass lived here! although the scales should've been a give away...)
• echos: slang for nocturnes, a reference to their tendency to mimic. (you're an echo like me! welcome!)
• mushroom: a contagion born wildclaw. (i'm not fond of mushrooms. they're savages.)
• rose: a labyrinth born wildclaw. (well i'm not so fond of roses. they're fragile.)
• fours/forurs: a derogatory term for mirrors used primarily by wildclaws. refers to their 4 eyes and their preference for quadrupedal travel. (a swarm of fours is coming our way. ugh, they'll wipe out all the food in minutes.)
• statue: refers to a snapper. a group of snappers is also colloquially referred ot as a museum. (did you hear a museum's passing through? i met one of the statues. they seem nice.)
• feeler: a skydancer, particularly one who is quite nosy. refers to their empath ability and the antennae attached to their carbuncle. (yeah, sorry. she can't help but worry, she's a feeler!)
• wars: insulting term for gaolers, most often used by banescales. an abbreviation of the word warden, and a reference to the war of Ice and Fire, that ended with the attempted genocide of their breed. (why are there so many wars here? i don't feel safe.)
• guailed (pronounce like jailed but with a hard g): describes a guardian with a charge that they do not like, or that does not like them. (didn't you hear? he got guailed. best not to ask about it.)
• eel: term for spirals, especially agitated ones, stemming from the fact that Yellow-Frilled Eel tie themselves in knots. eels are so hard to teach! they never sit still.(thanks to @/wolfsbutterfly42

beastclans slang:

• weed: derogatory term for dryads, a reference to the removal of dryad settlements from fertile lands in nature in order to grow food. also used as a verb [to get rid of dryads by an means] (why's this field so full of weeds? they'll ruin the good soil.)
• frog: a term for a dragon who trusts a manticore. a reference to the story of the frog and the scorpion and the idea of manticores as somewhat duplicitous and haughty. can also be a verb [to be betrayed by a manticore, sometimes used for all beastclans] (really? you're asking to get frogged if you hang around her)
• pigeon: an insult for talonok and harpies. in part, it references the fact that harpies, and occasionally raptorik, act as messengers to the beastclans. (what are you and your little flock of pigeons going to do about it?)
• traitors: refers to a dunhoof centaur allied with Talona. (we grew up with dragons, we've broken bread with them! i can't believe you're a traitor...)
• poison/poisoned: refers to a serthis settlements and their traditions of destruction and violence. (shade, i think the place's been poisoned. look at all this carnage...)
• to be poisoned: initially referred to the literal act of being poisoned by a maren, but now refers to any betrayal or breach of trust by a maren. occasionally refers to any beastclan. (she's not going to poison you, literally or otherwise. she just needs help!)
• siren: a derogatory term for maren, references their duplicitous reputation. (that's what a siren would want you to think!)
• cud: a derogatory term for longneck cuisine. (gross, i don't want to try any of this cud!)
• any insult directed towards a mask: an extraordinarily grave insult in harpy culture, although it is often directed towards any masked beastclan member
• chicken: a derogatory term towards talonok, particularly raptorik. a reference to their tendency to glide instead of truly flying. (aw, the chicken wants to fly, huh?)
• a kit: a liar or manipulative dragon. derived from the word kitsune. it's thought to have arose from innocent pranks being misunderstood. can also be a verb [to kit: to lie or be manipulative] (i can't believe they tricked me like that... ugh, what a kit!)
• to mith: to misunderstand, to be stupid. from the misunderstanding ofthe mith culture of fascination with stupidity and naivety. (how come you always mith jokes? should we keep you away from lights or something?)
• to faun: to be annoying or hyperactive. (quit fauning and focus! we have a job to do.)

things i'll add in the future:

• slang for breeds (offensive and otherwise)
• individual beastclan slang (only the ones that have lore, if there's interest and i can think of some)
• slang used by the beastclans
• more slang words as i think of them
• more inter-flight slang

hi! thank you so much for your interest in this. this isn't really a announcement, i just can't thank everyone who thinks my list of slang, insults and etymological explanations for them is satisfying and interesting individually, so i wanted to put it where everyone can see. i also want to say thank you to everyone who's suggested (and is suggesting, and will suggest) some other brilliant slang! while i may not add the specific thing you pitched, odds are i definitely looked at your suggestion and followed that thread to a term that i think would be easier to say as a shorthand, if that makes sense. or i looked at your term and looked at a term i came up with and combined them into a better term. again, thanks for the interest! i'll be updating this as i think of stuff, so do stick around!

These are so good I love stuff like this. These are particularly fantastic because they make regional sense and sometimes these types of things can sound really weird or forced but these flow really well and I can see them being used! Kinda wanna steal some to use in my lore...

[/quote] considering sleeping isn't so much a culturally taboo thing and more of a thing they just don't need to do, i imagine it'd be closer to telling them they should drop dead, since that's probably the only "sleeping" they do, other than the occasional molt. so yes, but actually, no.
