i've been wondering why people make the distinction that they either (a) play the game in a household where multiple people have accounts or (b) play the game on multiple devices, such as a desktop/laptop + a mobile phone
i understand the intent behind it, and why people do it - after all, people don't want to be mistaken for having multiple accounts or sharing their account with a separate person. from the perspective of someone with back end web development experience, however, i don't really understand
i assume that when information is passed to flight rising's servers, one piece of information that is presented is some kind of unique id associated with the device you're accessing it from. if this is how that works, the fr team can easily see that two people on the same network are accessing their accounts on two separate devices. it's also very easy to tell if a device accessing a website is a mobile device or not, though i can't say with certainty that this is the case on fr's back end, since i know literally nothing about its api
i understand how this might be worthwhile to put in your bio if you share a single device with someone else who has an account, but even then, there are ways of divining whether a single person is maintaining multiple accounts through observing patterns in how they interface with the website and those multiple accounts
i guess what i'm asking is this: is there a specific reason people specify the way they play in their bios? has there been a history of people being banned for having multiple accounts in a situation like this when that wasn't the case? i'm still fairly new to the game, all things considered, as i joined in june of 2019. thanks in advance :)

I think it’s just a safety thing about multi-accounting. I have a note like that because even though my partner doesn’t play the game anymore, we were both playing for a while on the same connection and on the same devices. I don’t know that it’s actually any safer than not saying anything, since anybody could lie on their description page, but it makes me feel a little better in case something with my account and my partner’s account got flagged for being accessed on the same device. As long as I’ve been here (mid 2015) I think I’ve seen people including comments like this.

this makes sense, and i'm not surprised to hear it has been a mainstay here. even with late-web 2.0-type monitoring on the back end, there's always room for error, especially in smaller communities like flight rising's. i mostly wish some kind of statement would be made on fr's end detailing things they will never suddenly ban people for, because that would probably assuage a lot of worry for people who live in households with multiple players

Most likely just safety reasons. I note that my sister plays since we trade/gift things to each other a lot, which can seem extremely suspicious considering we share the same homes. ^^"
I have no idea if staff even read bios when approaching a situation like this. Just like @/Wizardry mention above, it just makes me feel safer. Especially since my sister uses my old desktop at one house.

Yes actually! AFAIK, the person appealed, but nothing came of it and they had to start over with a new account. It really sucked.
However, the old account that got banned had a notice on their bio stating that family members played in the same household, so I guess that that confirms that the message in the bio does absolutely nothing.

Well I started doing it because I saw other people doing it so as i'm totally ignorant in this domain, I thought it was something that could get people in trouble and it wasn't bothering me to take a little time to be extra safe.
However, @
Nightwind thanks for pointing out these articles ! :o I never seen them and now I know I can safely remove this mention from my bio !

Glad to help! From what I can tell most people sort of skim over the Terms of Use (linked to during account creation) but never get around to the Rules and Policies (a relatively newish addition). The best part is there's a search function so it's not a huge wall of text.
