It was so exhilarating getting a fresh batch of newbies once a month. Seeing the introduction channel explode was such a cool feeling.

Does anyone have any interesting stories from that time? Do you like FR being opened all the time instead? Lmk!

Yeah! Welcome Week encouraged a really nice, charitable event in the community and it's a shame that it doesn't really happen anymore.

Closed registration also made it a lot harder for spammers to get in, as well as made sure that most of the people that joined were dedicated to doing so after having waited for the next opening, rather than folks just stopping by on a whim and leaving the next day.

I joined back when Welcome Weeks were still a thing. I think part of the reason I was able to find my feet so quickly was that during this time, a lot of helpful guides got bumped to the top of the forums and there were plenty of giveaways going on.

In my Flight, we had a user who'd set up a giveaway thread where older members could submit dragons they didn't want anymore. Newbies could swing by and then ask for whichever dragons they wanted. I participated several times, and it was always fun to send my dergs off to a new player and see how things went for them in their new homes.

As for open vs. closed registration, I haven't got a strong preference either way. It's still pretty much the same site for me.

I just miss the somewhat mature playerbase. It's hard to have that when there's no limits on making accounts, and people love to troll on their throwaway accounts.

Edit: As for whether I like open reg.. No, not really. I think it was worse for the community same as a sub-based game going F2P is.

I agree with everyone above. I hate to sound like a stick in the mud but the troll posts are just... exhausting.

There was a mystique when it came to Flight Rising (atleast when I was a kid) And I would LOVE for welcome weeks to come back, even if they're just a small 'newbie gifting' holiday.

I miss it too. Things were more tight-knit around then, which had pros and cons. There does seem to be significantly less drama nowadays though, with so many more players it's relatively easy to blend in with the crowd.

I remember getting so excited for welcome weeks, there were always folks putting together newbie packs or getting coli dragons ready for the new players! It was fun as a newbie too because you weren't alone, there were tons of people in exactly the same situation as you at exactly the same time.

Yeah, welcome weeks were a nice tradition :D I loved saving the prettiest dragons for the little pebbles (we had organized giveaways then, and before welcome weeks, when the reg windows were even shorter and rarer, they used to be a huge in-flight event), giftbombing and such. I'm happy that the game can afford to have unlimited number of players now, but it was a good time.

Who can take tomorrow, dip it in a dream, separate the sorrow and collect up all the cream?

The candyman can 'cause he mixes it with love and makes the world taste good.

I miss it. I miss a closer community, less multiaccounters, less immature people. Things have felt different lately.

I’m hesitant to say this for whatever reason but i agree that it would of been better for welcome weeks than an always open registration.

I probably wouldn’t of joined because i’m terribly bad at remembering stuff or sticking to things (i didn’t think FR would be fun and I initially joined because i was bored) but thankfully i was so very wrong!

But there would be a lot less trolls and dead accounts as well as an even higher incentive to not make extra accounts. Though it would mean far less players overall unfortunately.

I’m kinda glad i didn’t get much help at first, admittedly i did but i didn’t get giftbombed too heavily and mostly figured things out myself as well as sorted out issues with my clan by myself. Getting gifts are extremely nice and i very much appreciate all i’ve got but it feels even better to build up most of it on your own ^_^
