Festival push: September 20-26
Festival week: September 27 - October 3

Welcome, Sornieth, to Starfall Celebration 2020!
Only a few may remember that two years ago, Arcane performed a ritual, the effects of which were unknown to everyone who participated. No one outside of the flight even knew that it was happening. A ritual of unknown origins, with unknown consequences, and all eleven flights were complicit. No other flight knew because it was disguised as a party during Arcane’s yearly celebration of everything that makes them who they are. This year, shortly after Nature celebrated its own strengths and accomplishments, something strange happened.

A portal opened.

A portal opened, and no one knows what it does or where it leads.

Two dragons will venture through to learn the secrets hidden on the other side, but what they learn? What they discover? It might change everything, because on the other side?

Something lurks on the other side that Sornieth fears.

Welcome to this year’s Starfall Celebration. Welcome to What Lies Beyond.

Day 1:
By: Lundlaeva

Once, countless eons ago, strange entities beyond the imagination of dragonkind lived in harmony for thousands of years. They enjoyed the prosperity of their peaceful realm — until a terrible Shade was called down from between the stars by a thoughtless god, and it consumed them. Night fell. Magic died. Chaos reigned.

This Forgotten Realm sealed itself off in an attempt to protect the rest of reality …

Two Years Ago, the Arcane Flight discovered a ritual in their folktales that promised to summon unknown beings from beyond the void. The Arcanist’s acolytes performed the ritual as part of the Starfall Celebration in 2018: they invited dragons from across Sornieth to join in their Ritual Rave and draconic magicks from across all the Flights were combined through neon runes painted on scales, whirling dances and the rhythmic pulse of music — but the ritual failed.

Or so we thought...

A few months ago, not long after the Greenskeeper Gathering (in June 2020), Arcane dragons discovered an ancient gateway from a forgotten age. The upright circle of stones stood empty amid a shattered plain, surrounded by an eerie silence and an unexplained chill.

The Arcanist and his scholars ventured from the Observatory to examine this discovery.

Symbols ringed the circumference of the gateway — almost like an invitation. Following their deity’s instructions, the scholars inscribed more draconic runes to either side of the arch and focused their magic upon the central point. The Arcanist drew in his Breath and unleashed it.

They could not know that the Ritual Rave two years before had weakened the barriers between the worlds. They could not know that, ever since, terrible darkness from another reality had been probing at the cracks between dimensions. They could not know that a burst of draconic spellcasting would be enough to break the last defences laid by the ancient mages of the Forgotten Realm.

At the heart of a swirling vortex of Arcane energy, the Forbidden Portal tore open.

Day 2:

By: Lundlaeva

Curiosity blinked bright after-images from his eyes as the rush of magic settled, and his jaw dropped open as he took in the sight before him. The spell had worked! The empty stone gateway now rippled with a translucent sheet of weird green-tinted energy - a portal. A doorway to somewhere else entirely.

But where did it lead? To a far-distant point on Sornieth? To another point in time? Or had they opened up a different realm entirely? Curiosity’s heart raced at the countless possibilities.

The Arcanist was the first to recover. He stepped forward, reaching towards the portal and probed its surface with a delicate press of his claw. “How intriguing. We must investigate this further...”

The scholars gave a chorus of agreement and rushed to take a closer look for themselves. Curiosity flitted into the air to join them, but a familiar set of claws wrapped around his arm and tugged him gently back to the ground.

“Dream! What are you doing?” he squawked. He didn’t need to look at her to know his Skydancer sister was responsible. No one else would drag him away from the single most interesting discovery of his life so far!

“It could be dangerous, Curi,” Dream warned.

“If we didn’t go near anything that might be dangerous, we’d never leave our Lairs!” Curiosity snapped, pulling his arm free and leaping into the air. “I want a closer look.”

Dream called his name in frustration, but Curiosity ignored her. He loved his sister, but she just didn’t have the same insatiable thirst for knowledge that he shared with their deity. She had come on the gateway expedition along with a number of the Observatory’s other warriors, tasked with protesting the research team and the Arcanist in the field. However, Curiosity was certain she had volunteered for the job so that she could ‘protect’ him - by holding him back. He darted between the larger dragons’ limbs and wings, working his way through the chattering crowd until he hovered right beside the Arcanist’s crest.

“Arcanist, please!” a hassled-looking imperial was saying, a note of desperation in his voice. “I’m sorry, but you just will not fit!”

The Arcanist hummed, eyes narrowing. “You know, I think I could manage if I could just …”

As he spoke, the Arcanist hunched over, coiling his serpentine body downwards and pulling in his four wings and his spindly forelimbs as tight as they would go. He tilted his head to the side and stuck his face towards the portal, and Curiosity realised that he intended to go through.

But it was clear that the imperial was right - there was no way the Arcanist would fit. The portal was just a shade too small. At best, his crest would get stuck in the gateway. At worst, he’d knock the stone circle down entirely - and they had no idea how that would affect the portal itself!

Arcanist, no!” the scholars cried in unison.

The larger dragons shoved their wings and tails in front of the portal while the rest grabbed on to the Arcanist himself to hold him back. Curiosity added his voice to the rest, tugging urgently on his deity’s ear.

“Oh, very well,” the Arcanist huffed, pulling back from the thicket of limbs and sitting on his haunches, all four of his arms folded, a petulant look in his eyes.

The scholars, Curiosity included, gave a collective sigh of relief.

Most returned to their examination of the portal, but Curiosity paused after releasing the Arcanist’s pointed ear. If the Arcanist himself couldn’t venture through the portal, someone would have to go on his behalf. Curiosity spared a furtive glance towards Dream, who had approached and now stood at the back of the crowd, her glowing eyes fixed on him. She wouldn’t be pleased. But Curiosity’s head was so full of questions it felt like he might burst. He had to know what was on the other side of the portal, and now he had the perfect opportunity. He just needed to take it before someone else did.

Curiosity swooped in front of the Arcanist and cried, “I volunteer to go through the portal!”

The Arcanist’s brows lifted, his sulky attitude transforming into interest. “Oh? What have we here? A scholar after my own heart! Willing to put aside the innumerable dangers to satisfy his desire for knowledge.”

“Dangers?” Curiosity asked. A shiver of worry ran down his spine. He had assumed that if the Arcanist was willing to go through the portal, it must be safe - but perhaps not?

However, he didn’t get an answer. No one had even heard his question. The Arcanist was too busy counting off numerous instructions on his long claws, and the other dragons were stuffing sample jars and parchment for note-taking into a satchel for him and not paying attention. All but one.

Dream leaped into the air, spread her wings to soar over the ranks of scholars and landed on the ground before the portal. She hissed, “Curiosity, what do you think you’re doing?”

“Something important,” he replied, diving to join her and trying to focus on what had made him offer to go through in the first place. “This portal is an opportunity like nothing dragonkind has seen before - our research could change life on Sornieth as we know it! And it’s a great honour to be sent on a research expedition like this by the Arcanist himself.”

Dream opened her mouth to reply but didn’t get the chance. One of the scholars shoved the satchel of equipment into Curiosity’s claws and then the Arcanist spoke.

“Ah, and a warrior to protect you on your journey into the unknown. Excellent!” the Arcanist said, laying gentle but firm hands between their wings and ushering both of them towards the portal.

“What?” Dream squawked, “No! I didn’t -”

“Good luck on your voyage, my children,” the Arcanist continued with a fatherly smile, oblivious to her protests. “I don’t think that this will kill you, but if it does - well, at least we will have learned something.”

“Kill us?!” Dream said in a horrified whisper, looking over at Curiosity.

“I’m sure it won’t be that bad?” Curiosity tried, though he really had nothing to base that theory on. Surely the Arcanist wouldn’t actually send them to their deaths. Not on purpose!

“Don’t forget to take lots of notes,” the Arcanist said, and gave Curiosity and Dream a firm push that sent them tumbling through the portal.

Day 3:

By: enen16106

“Where… where are we?”

The two dragons stared at their surroundings in shock.

The landscape was grey and bleak. The sky was dark, covered with heavy clouds. Faint tendrils waved down from the darkness overhead, curling around anything that they could reach. The ground was cracked, dry beneath their claws. The distant callings of strange creatures echoed, unanswered. Only the occasional dry shrub dotted the area, and it was a wonder how it could survive, with so little water and minimal sunlight. Jagged rough rocks jutted out of the ground. Small pools of water could be seen in the distance, but it looked contaminated and unhealthy for drinking.

The Forbidden Portal led to a barren wasteland.

Dream scanned the area warily, and Curiosity knew that she was on the lookout for danger. On the other claw, the small hyper Fae wanted to explore, wanted to know all the creatures that resided within the realm.

In a land so dilapidated, creatures still thrived. But they were unlike any that the two dragons had ever seen before. Bat-like creatures hovered among shrivelled trees. Headless creatures stood upon their back limbs, surveying the landscape. Skeletons that looked like horses rode upon the clouds, glaring at the intruders. Fluffy alpacas giggled and then disappeared, only to reappear somewhere far away.

Curiosity’s frills flared in excitement, still trying to process the sight before him. He tugged on his sister’s talons, pointing to a distant mutant toad. He didn’t expect the other realm to be like this, but if it was, they had to start exploring its wonders. “Come on!” he chirped. “Let’s explore!”

“I don’t know, Curi,” Dream replied, and then narrowed her eyes at the gauntlet the toad held firmly. “It’s all very… strange. And weird. Who knows what we’ll find here? For all we know, this land is dangerous.”

Curiosity huffed, his frills pressed against his small head in frustration. “Come on. The sole purpose of our visit is to find out what’s here,” he reminded the overly-cautious Skydancer. “If we don’t explore, we’re literally failing our mission. We should honour the Arcanist’s request! To find out what exactly this realm houses!”

Dream sighed. Finally, she gave in. “But remember, be careful-”

Before Dream could finish her lecture, Curiosity zipped away. His eyes scanned the landscape, eager to approach any creature he could find. It turned out to be a blueish lion-octopus hybrid, pacing the dry land in search of any prey, its tentacle mane squirming. Curiosity let out an excited squeal, nearing the strange creature. At the sound of wingbeats, the head of the creature snapped up, its yellow eyes scanning the small Fae. A shiver of apprehension shot up Curiosity’s spine. Slowly, he went closer to the creature. The creature followed his every movement, its eyes never once leaving him.
Excitement swelled within Curiosity. This was it! The first interaction between Sornieth and the Forbidden Realm! Curiosity wondered whether they could understand the lion-octopus and vice versa. If they could, the wonders -

“Curi! Look out!”

The creature was suddenly in mid-air, its face twisted into an ugly snarl. The Fae ducked and rolled, the lion-octopus missing him by barely an inch. It glowered, growling, paws spaced apart in a battle-ready stance. Curiosity’s heart pounded madly, and he struggled to catch his breath.

Before he could react, the creature pounced again. Only then did the Fae realise that the tips of its tentacles were turning a black and unnatural pitch-black hue.

Curiosity was reminded of only one thing when he saw that colour.

The Shade.

Now, the whole creature was black, the tentacles consuming the lion’s body and turning it into an ever-shifting mass that fed on magic. The tendrils were spread out, ready to devour Curiosity and his magic.

Family and friends flashed before Curiosity’s eyes. The Arcanist. His parents.

Dream.

Something thudded to the ground in front of Curiosity. He opened his eyes, but the creature was no longer over him. He gathered his bearings, breathing hard, and stood back up. A small bat-like creature had tackled the much larger creature. The bat struck the lion with its pale wings. Bursts of magic chipped away at the Shade-touched creature. Finally, the corrupted creature fell limp, the darkness withdrawing from the body and retreating to the sky.

Dream fluttered to her aghast brother and pulled him into a tight embrace, whispering, “Why do you always have a death wish?”

It was meant as a joke, but Curiosity could tell that the Skydancer was genuinely concerned for his safety. However, something else was stuck on the Fae’s mind. He gently tapped the Skydancer on the shoulder, pointing to his saviour.

The bat-like creature was now hovering in front of the siblings. It had purple-blue fur trailing down its long purple body, with pale purplish-blue wings. Its head was oddly missing, replaced by a shiny black jewel, yet it seemed to be able to move.

And talk.

The creature chittered at them in a conversational tone, talking to them within their heads. Dream and Curiosity stared at the creature in utter confusion. Curiosity wasn’t sure which confused him more: the fact that the creature had no head but still had signs of a brain, or that it seemed to be using telepathy to communicate.

Perhaps everything. Frankly, everything in the realm was starting to weird Curiosity out.

The creature seemed to finally realize that they couldn’t understand a single word it said. It produced an empty parchment, somehow writing down some ancient runes, and showing it to the gawking dragons.

Both Dream and Curiosity could read ancient runes, taught by their language professor. So they squinted at the words, and it read: “I’m Null. Who are you, and what are you doing here?”

Day 4:

By: Tirtouga678

“I’m Null. Who are you, and what are you doing here?” As the words appeared on the worn surface of the parchment, Curiosity and Dream shared a glance. Neither was sure how to respond, and both were still shaken by the attack. Eventually, though, the virtue that Curiosity had been named for took over him. An ancient saying in Sornieth was “curiosity killed the floracat”, but Curiosity begged to differ. One, he was not a murderer. Two, he’d say curiosity helped Sornieth. How many breakthroughs had dragonkind gone through? Would any of them have been possible without curiosity?

Curiosity turned his attention back to the creature that had saved them, inspecting it closely. What was Null? It looked like some sort of wyvern, but without a head - how did it eat? Could it breathe? Did it need to breathe and eat and drink, even? What kind of power did it have? There were so many questions buzzing around in his head, a storm of unending and unanswered inquiries. With great difficulty, he brought his rampant thoughts under control and managed to write the answer to Null’s question on the paper.

“I’m Curiosity, and this is Dream. We’re from Sornieth.”

Null tilted its head, wings moving erratically, and produced another piece of parchment, runes etching themselves slowly on the paper.

“What… is… Sornieth?” Well. This was going to be interesting. Curiosity looked around at where they were and frowned at the roiling black sky. It looked familiar, somehow.

“Sornieth is the world from the other side of the portal.” At this, Null’s demeanour seemed to shift abruptly, and an alarmed chittering went off in the dragons’ heads. “Is something wrong?” Curiosity wrote. Null bobbed up and down, and the volume of its telepathy grew. “Okay. Something’s wrong. What do you have against our world?”

Null paused before the voice in their heads turned disapproving, and more words appeared on the parchment. “Not… against your world…”

It hesitated, tail twitching nervously, and Dream turned to Curiosity with uncertainty, antennae quivering even in the lack of a breeze. There was a frown on her face as she watched the strange creature.

“I can feel its discomfort. If you could be a bit less blunt with your words that would help,” she hissed, before moving to soothe their new friend, draping her wing over its small form. “Could you tell us why you reacted that way?”

Curiosity had to admit his sister had a way with consoling others, as the discomfort that rolled off Null in waves quickly subsided, replaced by a sea of calm.

“The portal… wasn’t supposed to be opened,” it explained. Curiosity flicked his fins dismissively, but let Null continue talking. “Over 4000 years ago, this land was a lush and peaceful haven.” The wyvern began drifting towards a small cave nearby, and the two dragons hastened to follow. “It was the 3928th anniversary of the end of the war when the Shade first came.”

In the distance, the wind howled in rage, and Curiosity shivered at the sudden drop in temperature. Null abruptly stopped, glanced behind briefly, before tackling them all behind a rocky outcrop. A thick, gnarled wave of the Shade slammed down where they had been mere seconds ago. While Curiosity and Dream tried to calm their frayed nerves, Null continued its story.

“Legend holds that in that long-ago time when we still had gods to revere and worship, one of our deities invoked the Shade from somewhere far away. It was far more dangerous than anyone could have fathomed. That fateful celebration destroyed any hope we had that our gods could save us.”

Carefully, Dream asked, “What… what happened to your deities?” Curiosity felt the chittering voice in his head sour. Null turned back, regarding them with its strange, headless gaze. There was icy silence. A shiver went up Curiosity’s spine. He gripped the parchment tighter, skin prickling under Null’s scrutiny.

Words appeared on the parchment slowly, obsidian runes bold and bitter.

“The gods are dead.”

Curiosity was starting to feel more unsettled than curious at this point. But he had to know what happened. So he followed Dream and Null as the Void Wyvern ducked into the safety of a small, dimly lit cave. As soon as he fluttered in, the cave walls flared to life, countless sigils and drawings glittering lilac and orchid against the obsidian of the stone canvas. It took Curiosity’s breath away, seeing history immortalised as glowing runes on stone, and he wished he could bring the whole cave back to the Observatory for further study.

“Hey.” Dream flicked him with her tail, and he turned to face her. “Look at this.”

Her voice was hushed, eyes wide with either wonder or fear. The Fae squinted at the scene she was motioning at, and dread sank into his belly as he regarded the heartbreaking history of the realm. He could see a small creature observing a strange shred, and the next drawing showed the horror it felt as it encountered the Shade for the first time.

There was a chase, then a giant struggle, followed by pandemonium as the Shade set its hungry sights on the revellers in the distance. The creature cowered behind a grove of trees as the gathering descended into chaos. The last scene showed a bone-chilling sight. Out of the previously joyous group came hundreds upon hundreds of Shade-touched, eyes empty and white as they roamed without purpose, corrosive magic seeping out all around them, devouring anything it touched.

What they had just been shown was a being far more powerful than the Shade in their world. Curiosity and Dream watched in stunned silence as the wall opposite them flickered alight. There were only three drawings on this wall. The first showed a small group of survivors huddled together, hurrying towards a portal in the distance. The Forbidden Portal. The second drawing showed the group casting a spell on the portal - wait, were they sealing it? The last drawing… the last drawing… everything clicked into place for Curiosity.

In the last drawing, the creature stood next to the portal, all alone in the darkness.

Curiosity looked uncertainly at his sister before they whirled to face Null. There was only uncomfortable silence. No chittering in their heads. Even Null’s wingbeats had fallen silent. Null held their questioning, disbelieving gazes with no more than a twitch of its tail. Then the parchment gave off a faint warmth, and Curiosity’s gaze snapped to the old and worn paper to see Null’s words forming on the surface.

“Yes. I am the creature, and this is the history of our realm.”

Day 5:

A silence fell over the group, the history of the Forbidden Realm replaying in their heads.

Dream was the one who broke the silence. “So this mega Shade thing…it was the cause of the destruction of this world?”

As she spoke, she wrote down the runes and showed them to Null. The Void Wyvern hesitated, before nodding. Despite not having a face to show any emotions, that single action alone made Curiosity think that Null was sad. Perhaps angry.

Dream stared at the portal in a distance, her eyes speaking untold horrors. “But…now that the portal is open, won’t the Shade go through and destroy Sornieth?”

Null stared at the shaky runes written by Dream and nodded again.

Dream looked to Curiosity, determination flashing through her eyes. “We need to stop this, Curi,” she whispered, her voice trembling and betraying the confidence she tried to uphold. “Or else, everyone’s going to die. We need to close that portal. Now.”

It took a while for Curiosity to process the words. As Null and Dream were talking, he had focused his attention on the vast land instead. It was grey and slightly brown, but as some say, “Every cloud has a silver lining.” That may be the case for this alternate dimension. If they took some samples from here, maybe they could find out more than they ever could from their world. Perhaps they could find out how to destroy the Shade!

Before Curiosity could think through what he was going to say, he turned back to Dream and asked, “Should we?”

Dream gasped at Curiosity’s words. “What do you mean?” she asked. “Null has made it clear. This mega Shade thing shouldn’t be trifled with. Do you want it to infect Sornieth, infest the roots of our world?”

Curiosity narrowed his eyes at his older sister. He understood her concerns, understood how dangerous it was to keep the seal open. But the risks were worthwhile for the greater good if they succeeded. Didn’t Dream see that?
“I know.” He snapped, his frills turning a light shade of red. “But you heard Null. It said that it has been watching over the portal for centuries with the other creatures. If the mega Shade hasn’t completely decimated this area, it can’t destroy Sornieth. We have so many dragons. So many fighters to keep the Shade at bay.”

Now Dream was on her claws, glowering at Curiosity. “Are you telling me, you want to risk the lives of others for your own foolish aims?”

Curiosity flared his wings, rising into the sky. In such a foreign land, he could not be dragged down into yet another fight again, not now when they were taking such a huge risk for dragonkind. “If we are quick, we can do a sweep of this area. Take new samples. Record our observations. At least the other dragons’ effort to open the Portal won’t be wasted!”

Dream growled. “The risks are too huge! It’s too dangerous, can’t you see? If we leave the Portal open, sooner or later we’re all going to get killed by the Shade. What good will that do?!”

Curiosity tried to take a deep breath. Nope, not working, not when he was so angry. Faes didn’t often feel such overwhelming emotions, but he was going to blame that on Dream for triggering it. It was all her fault. If she wasn’t so careful and so paranoid about everything, they could go back and be heroes! But noooooo, they had to skulk around and take back absolutely nothing to the eager and waiting dragons.

“FINE!” Curiosity shouted, tail raised and frills flared. “If you’re going to be so short-sighted and waste everyone’s time, so be it! I’m going to get SOMETHING that’ll make everything worthwhile. Then YOU will finally understand that I was right all along.”

“CURI! Now's not the time to risk everyone's lives for this! If you really want to do anything foolish, you know I'll have to stop you,” Dream warned, antennae twitching.

"I DON'T CARE WHAT YOU SAY, FOR ARCANIST'S SAKE," Curiosity retorted. "I'M GOING ALONE!"

"DON'T DO THAT, CURI! OR I'LL FEED YOU TO THE SHADE!"

Curiosity often followed Dream’s instructions, knowing his sister wanted the best for him. But not today. Today, he was giving the orders. Today, he did whatever he wished, and be whatever he wanted to be. He glared at Dream, flicked his tail, then turned away, quickly exiting the scene.

Curiosity heard Null’s hurried wingbeats as it tried to chase up to him. He heard Dream’s aggravated snarl as she followed: she could not let her brother out of her sight.

Curiosity sighed, wishing that she could just leave him alone. He wasn’t done with her yet. The fight replayed in his mind, over and over again, endless torment of guilt and anger and frustration. He blinked away the tears that stung his eyes. Perhaps he’ll forgive his sister, but definitely not now. Now, he had better things to do. With a shake of his head, Curiosity flew away.
