When I last played I think there were half as many genes and half as many colors (to say NOTHING of the ancient breeds that are like, a whole new ballgame). I'm looking at all my old breeding pairs now and like, doing advanced calculus about how wild their offspring would look with all the new possibilities.

How on EARTH do y'all decide ANYTHING lol, especially with regards to breeding pairs?? I'm astounded. XYY or whatever seem necessary to keep your sanity.

I'm overwhelmed by all the options!

I am in a constant state of indecision...it’s surprisingly fun.

Oh I feel you! I "quit" FR in 2016 and just returned in October to the expanded color wheel, new genes, ancients, lair tabs and hibden, new dragon profiles, Fiona, everything. I'm still adjusting, especially to all the new colors and genes...

I ended up doing a lair purge, keeping only the old dragons that I could still do something with, and buying some dragons with my favorite new genes. I also went through the wiki to check out all the holiday apparel and new familiars I missed so I could prioritize what to buy, and started trading/selling my older stuff that I didn't need... there's so much good stuff that happened these past few years, it's a seriously daunting task to catch up on.

Welcome back!

There is definitely a lot for you to go through, but don't worry too much and just take your time getting used to things again! Pretend you're a newbie joining the site for the first time. Explore, get to know the NPCs (if you've been away long enough to see new colours for the first time, then there's quite a few more NPCs that arrived since then as well), look at all the cool guides (there's even guides with certain genes and all their accent colours I think! it can get pretty wild!).

We have hibernal den, new mini games, coliseum revamp, hoard revamp, dragon profile/lair revamp, we can have hatchling avatars, vistas, and dragons can sport backgrounds! So much new stuff!

I personally like eye burners, which is really useful for choosing dragons. I saved an auction house search (you can save AH searches now! It's very useful!) for the brightest colors on the site G1s and check that daily, also looking at multigaze and primals of the same colors (if you haven't noticed, there are now special eye types. In your inventory you should have a vial of scattersight from the eye update, these are worth 700+ gems when people aren't liquidating everything so make sure you don't use it on accident).

By limiting my search by a select few colors and keeping it to either G1s or the rarest eye types, I end up with only a few pages of dragons that are both within the price range I'm willing to spend on a dragon and within the colors that are interesting to me.

If I find a dragon that's appealing to me in those few pages, I go scry it, and personally, because eyeburners, I stick to the non-gem genes that can have very distinct accent colors, so poison/toxin, swirl/marble, lionfish/noxtide, tapir/striation, and pinstripe/trail mostly.

Obviously my personal aesthetic plays a huge part of this specific process, but it boils down to figure out what you like and limit what you look at based on that. If I were you, I'd spend some time in the AH just looking at fodder dragons to get a better idea of what you like, or go to the scrying workshop and generate some random dragons for a while (if you hit the import button without putting an ID in it just randomizes everything) for the same purpose. There's a lot, but much of it probably isn't your cup of tea, so you can ignore much of it.

Welcome back!

There are definitely a lot of options now! Personally, my lair has grown slowly over the time I've been here, but here's what I do when I decide to add to it:

I'll first get inspired by something I like a lot. Usually I get inspired as genes come out, but refreshing the random dragon in the Scrying Workshop might give some ideas. (Be forewarned, though - only certain eye types can be applied, and the ones that can't are RNG results from any nest. I tend not to design projects around them.)

From there, I'll design a pair by finding some genes and another breed that mixes-and-matches well. I'll take rarity into account so the genes and breeds either match rarity or are one step from each other, with the more common one being the one I like more.

For color range, I like variety, so I choose large ranges that I suspect would work well together, but often with some sort of theme. Like my Piebald/Paint pair, where I made sure to include Oranges and Blacks for Koi- and Cow-style dragons. Or my Starmap/Constellation pair where I wanted Pinks, Blacks, Purples, and Blues.

Sometimes I hatch Gen 1s and do what I can with them, too. I'll pull them up in the Scrying Workshop and press the dice icons to see what they would look like in different breeds and genes, usually deciding on something I don't have, or don't have a lot of.

Then, for the Gen 1s mate (which a lot of people don't do - oftentimes Gen 1s are just for show, not breeding), I'll figure out what sort of ranges that dragon could make with its colors and see what genes are around it. I'll find something I like and find a dragon to be its mate that has those conditions - usually I have to gene or breed this mate myself since what I'm looking for rarely lines up with what's popular.

I always work on one project at a time. Other ideas I put on my profile or save as Scrys for later use. This way, I have complete dragons to admire and be happy about, and a constant stream of goals to accomplish.

I don't know what your style is, but I hope this helps!
