How Modern!Hex, Gaoler!Hex, and Veilspun!Hex do completely different things to the mane?

Not really, since modern giraffe/hex are so old. I'm glad they're not leaving the manes totally blank, it would be boring if it were that way on 90% of the genes.
Considering the veil and gaoler have a very small area for wings, it makes sense to have it on the mane/hair

Yes, actually. I would far prefer that things be as uniform as possible, at least among the ancients. It doesn't super irritate me or anything though, just a preference!

I can see it being mildly bothersome to some people who like things to be uniform.

It does actually bother me some. I like consistency, and I'd expect the same effect on different dragons, especially among ancients or among moderns. Also, whatever Hex is doing to the Veilspun mane just doesn't make sense to me. The same with Patchwork. It's long, flowing hair, and giving it spots or making it look like squares of fabric just doesn't compute in my brain. I'd much rather see some variation in strands, or something that flows with the hair.
