Maybe it's just my taste for gross body horror aesthetics but I think smirch can look really cool. Makes it look like a weird film or sludge is on your dragon. I'm very fond of how it looks on my dudes:

Smirch is actually really pretty with the right colors! I currently only have Maelon with Smirch but plan to get more! But, his nest is about to hatch soon, so I'll probably get some cute hatchlings with Smirch!

It's kind of messy and shapeless, and also so plentiful that it would still hardly be worth anything even if it were an amazing gene. Still, I don't think it's impossible to use. Pretty cute on those mirror, for one!
It's also pretty useful for breeding projects since, despite the gene itself being common as dirt, it has a fairly high rarity bracket, so you can apply it to one parent for a better chance of inheriting the other parent's tert.

Because even when people share dragons and scries that they think make it work many of us still think it looks blah and it's hard to get around that. It's very situational and hard to work with. The only time I've ever liked it was on all of two dragons that it added a water effect onto.
Every gene will be liked by someone but every gene will also be disliked by someone. Some will be more appealing to the overall masses while others won't. Smirch lands in the won't category and honestly that's just fine. It's not the only one in there.

I think it's definitely partially due to people thinking it looks messy/not liking how it looks, but honestly? I think it also has something to do with it being so cheap. Cheap genes just don't seem very popular in general, maybe because people don't view them as anything special.

Python and Morph appear to be generally all right despite of being Coliseum genes as well. Then again, Baldwin gene like Keel is unpopular. All the genes divide by how they appeal to the players. Some are balanced, some become more liked and some less liked.
