TOPIC | why are ancients missing so many genes

This is THE one thing I can't stand about ancient dragons. It's fine to me that we can't dress them, but come on... what's the point of a dragon that can't be dressed to be missing half the other customization tools? WHY can gaolers have bee with their minuscule wings, but not banescales???

I can understand why the devs don't want to hand draw iri/shim and cry/facet. But those are the only genes that can't be automatized. There's no reason for veilspuns to be missing pinstripe/trail

We were also promised unusual body types. As of now, only banescales break the mold. Gaolers would look so much better without wings, imho

I guess they're still working on the new stuff! It's not easy doing new genes for dragons like Gaolers and Veilspuns because, well, all that fur! And hair! Imagine having to draw around all that hair!

I guess they're just dragons with features (fluff, hair mane, no front legs) that wouldn't work with normal apparel or genes. We should be getting more soon.

But yeah...why DO Gaolers have wings?

We could get them in future updates, I mean, they didn't have stained until recently so they're obviously still working to give them genes. It's called they're busy working on other things and not just getting more genes for the ancients we have.

I'm sure eventually we'll get more but honestly I'm fine with what they have for the time being and would much rather get whole new cool genes and ancient versions of modern ones. I'd also like it if they'd fix the glitches before adding more and to take their time so the genes look good rather than slapping them together to rush out an update.

As for the gaolers... yeah, they'd likely look better without wings but then it'd be lacking any real place for a secondary other than the mane, which wouldn't show off some of the genes very well imo. Plus it was the first ancient that came out so they were likely still testing the waters with pushing the design.
I mean, veils still pretty much follow the modern look too but I'm not going to complain, they look good as is and I like their line breaking genes too much to want them as a modern.
I'd also not like another wyvern for a while since we now have one with Banes.

I'm really hoping for a wingless Water and Earth ancient though (well water might have 'wings' but more along the lines of fins would be cool).
The issue with not having wings though is then they really have to get creative to give them a secondary color area. Like I said, gaolers could have their mane but some genes probably wouldn't look good, which might be another reason they don't have certain ones available.

Ancient Breeds having limited but relatively unique genes is part of the trade-off for getting them more often.

All the genes have to be hand-drawn. The automatisation is specifically about generating the right colours.

Gaolers were the first Ancient so they fit the traditional dragon bodyplan because they were FR's way of easing people into the Ancients feature.

Veilspun also have the bodyplan because, as a Gem breed, the devs didn't want to lock something really really unique behind a premium currency. The next few breeds should start looking different.

wheeeeee
I actually really like Gaoler wings! I think the idea in their lore of them being used for climbing/digging/fighting is really cool.

I would love to see more unique body types soon though! I would love to see a cool water ancient that looks like some kind of sea monster. Maybe the secondary could just be some big cool back/tail fins?

they weren't ever intended to have all of the genes available for other dragons. it's the tradeoff for getting new breeds more often than once every 5 years.

@miunizee
No? The ancients having no apparel is the reason why it takes forever to get modern breeds, because they have to handraw every apparel on the gender poses and genes with all three of the poses.

The trade off was both. Limited but exclusive gene options and no apparel for more breeds more frequently. But there’s nothing stopping them from receiving new genes either. There’ve been several ancient gene additions since their introduction.

I believe around the veil release they’ve stated that the next one will be wilder with the body plan, so that could be something to look forward to.
