That would make a lot of sense, tbh. The new breed turned them to stone or is fighting against something that turned them to stone.

I also think it's likely they are the missing dragons. But, on the other hand, it's possible they've been rendered with vague detail specifically so it's difficult to tell what breed they are, if they are any preexisting breed at all.
