TOPIC | Amphibians and the Forbidden Portal
1 2
I noticed something interesting about the creatures in the Forbidden Portal. So, a lot of the creatures there appear to be warped versions of existing Sornieth creatures, made strange by exposure to the portal. For example, look at the tooltip of the Aberrant Chacma: [item=aberrant chacma] "The warped energies of this portal," implying that it's the portal itself that's warping the creatures with strange, eldritch energies from beyond Sornieth. It seems to affect each creature differently. Some become strange hybrids, such as [item=barhide menace]. Some grow extra limbs and heads, such as [item=ferberus]. Some just become...plain weird, like [item=springfoot bilworper]. Some don't seem to be affected physically much, but gain strange powers, such as [item=teleporting planesrunner] (although it's debatable if that one changed at all from exposure to the portal, as its tooltip implies that it's already that way). But one class of creature seems to be affected the worst: Amphibians. The [item=frogspawn flyer] has "frog in its lineage." It's implied to the descendant of frogs. But it looks almost nothing like a frog at all, warped more than most other creatures by the portal. Same with the [item=bearded pupowl]. It's said to be related to salamanders, despite looking more like an octopus. Salamanders are also amphibians. The [item=fear frog] and [item=terror toad] aren't physically changed very much, still looking much like frogs/toads, but have become huge and powerful, being boss monsters. The conclusion? Amphibians are somehow much more sensitive to the warping magic of the Forbidden Portal than other animals, often becoming much more mutated by it. This makes sense from a biological standpoint, as amphibians are known to be affected a lot worse by toxic chemicals in the environment because of their skin absorbing it much more readily, and are some of the creatures that become much more mutated from these chemicals and often die out the quickest in poisoned areas. The magic could be affecting them in a similar way, being absorbed much quicker or reacting more violently with their biological/magical composition. Thank you for coming to my TED Talk.

I think it makes sense as irl frogs and other amphibians are much more susceptible to radiation.

One day, will these too become but distant memories?
. . .
Yes, in the blink of an eye.

There is also a possibility that the Fear Frogs and Terror Toads from the portal could be their own race. The Fear Frog's tooltip says they come from "a realm beyond", which implies that there may be another world populated with those anthromorphic amphibians. Amphibia anyone?

YESSS I LIVE FOR LORE ANALYSIS!

Personally, I think the sheep are native to the Forbidden Portal, and the Terror Toads/Fear Frogs have been there so long they might as well be.

This made me realize a whole.. thing. The portal might not be just some.. eldritch corruption thingy. I had like a whole bunch of paragraphs typed up about it but I don't really wanna ramble and it's probably more offtopic for this.

And also.. "frog in it's lineage". Does this mean there were NORMAL frogs there once, or.. did frogs from Sornieth just cross over??

edit: Actually, I think I might put the thing down anyways if we're going to be talking about just.. lore.

The Forbidden Portal might just be more than 'Eldritch Energies', too. Judging by the tooltips of other creatures (and the names and appearances of some, like Foolish Prince and the eyes), it might be some place completely ruined by some super magical war.
Sanguine Multimist's tooltip is "This sentient mist rose from the grounds of ancient battlefields." This means the magic radiation might've been strong enough to raise the dead, and create some strange miasma zombie. The Bilworpers and frog bosses might have some part in this, too. The frog bosses ravage the land, and the Bilworpers follow their path.
Both Bilworpers seem to have something in common, though- they seem to rejuvenate the land. I'm assuming the 'spring' in Spring Bilworpers means like the season, spreading life. The Bilworpers might be 'genetically engineered' in some way, likely by magic, but ESPECIALLY the Tattertail Bilworpers.
Take a look at their tooltip. "Flocks of bilworper manage to thrive on desiccated soil with minimal sunlight. Their droppings and digging revitalize the land, ironically making it unsuitable for bilworper!"
They're attracted to ruined land, but revitalize it on accident. They find ruined ground. They revitalize the land. Then they repeat their cycle.
Minimal sunlight could mean things like.. caves, or shaded areas, or also areas that are heavily covered by something like clouds constantly.
There could be heavy clouds constantly looming over from the magic, or some barrier covering the sky.
Sparksylphs could live in these magic clouds.
"Sparksylph congregate on the edges of the fiercest storms: a crackling mist riding the winds."

There could also be an ancient, ruined civilization. Maybe they could've fallen from magic they used, accidentally destroying everything instead of some battle.
See the Wyverns. The Spectre Wyverns seal their knowledge away by getting rid of their voices. The Void Wyverns seek to use forbidden knowledge, possibly the ones the Spectres are trying to keep hidden. The knowledge that destroyed the land.
There are also the eyes. They could be observers, made to monitor things so that nothing goes wrong again. Or to monitor things like the Bilworpers, so they keep rejuvenating the land, or maybe just monitor things like the frog bosses so they don't rampage.
There's also the Mindless Flight/Foolish Princes. But I got too tired to continue this whole ramble
