So we need a non-living thing that can still reproduce. Thankfully(?) we have that IRL: Viruses. Clearly this means that Luminax reproduces by inserting their DNA into a host that will then produce additional emperors.

oh big agree, I was going more for the "viral infection" mentioned by azhdrake, or maybe since emperors have godpowers they can just Create things without "reproducing"; they essentially sculpt a new cool minion and turn it in to their mommy like a big group project
