No, this is not a serious suggestion. I don’t actually believe magic needs to make any sort of sense, and I'm glad you like your flight. Reply with your (good-natured) counter-proposals for combining flights, I’d love to see them.
Posts about creating new flights are pretty common. This post is not one of them.
Why are the dragons of Sornieth divided into 11 elemental flights? “Because there are 11 jealous, petty elemental gods,” you say, “and they decided it would be so.” But why should we pattern our lives on the whims of ancient, petty gods? I am here today to tell you that we should not.
The gods’ feelings are not my concern. “Behold, I am formed from raw elemental energies. My magnificence could not possibly collaborate or tolerate constructive criticism. I am too special.” Pfah. Stop trying to hit your sister and get a job.
Aesthetic is also not my concern. You want to keep your old eye colors? First of all, why? Most breeds have tiny squinty eyes, makes no difference. But sure, whatever. Make a new eye type or something. Try out an ombre. I’m not an artist.
Will everyone agree with my recommendations? Probably not. But like it or not, this is what peak elemental performance looks like.
Nature and Plague: What is nature? Growing stuff. What is disease? Growing stuff. What is decay? Growing stuff. These two are clearly the same thing. Combine them. Give the new flight a new name for fairness’ sake, if you must. Bio Flight sounds like a pharmaceutical company, so maybe Life Flight? Also silly. But as I said, aesthetic is not my concern. As for the Gladekeeper and Plaguebringer, since leaving them alone in the same room is unwise, might I suggest a seasonal timeshare?
Light and Shadow: Stuff and… the absence of stuff? Nope, sorry. It’s the same thing. I’d lean toward keeping the name Light Flight, but if Lightweaver and Shadowbinder are going to be pissy about it, let’s go with Photon Flight. Got a nice ring to it, no? Not at all silly, totally does not make me think of cheesy superheroes. For the leadership of Photon Flight (Captain Photon?) LW and SB could probably work out a day shift/night shift situation.
Ice and Water: Treatment of Ice comes down to what concept, precisely, best defines Ice Flight. Is it cold, or is it actual frozen water? Either way it’s obviously not a standalone phenomenon. I chose the frozen water interpretation - so we’ve got stuff and the same stuff, but colder. Nope again! Combine them. The Icewarden probably won’t mind, so we’ll stick with Water Flight. And Tidelord’s not even here, so leadership is not an issue. If he ever comes back, Icewarden can step down to focus on his true passion, incarceration.
Arcane: How is alchemy not under the Arcane umbrella? Baldwin’s not pink, is that it? Arcanist, recognize your bogsneak children. I don’t care if you didn’t create them personally, your unpredictable energies most certainly did. The audacity.
Other flights:
Fire and Lightning - I really want to combine these. They have the same passion for toil and desire to subjugate the working class. Unfortunately, the two elements are pretty clearly distinct. If the Flamecaller or Stormcatcher feel like voluntarily combining forces, though, I’m all for it. For efficiency’s sake.
Earth and Wind - Eh, they’re fine.
So that’s it. The eight elemental flights. I’ve done the work so you don’t have to. You’re welcome?
