Normally a dragon I see and keep as perma strikes a feeling, sensation or even piece of lore at first sight, and thus I keep. Others simply look special/unique. I only forget those who are on the hibden because its very cluttered and with no tabs, but not because they are any less important. Theres some I fell out of love with, but Im waiting for a good owner to pass them on.
When I moved flights from nature to arcane, I got rid of some of my fodder breeders because the pink eyes didnt fit the hatchies, and others whose lore was strictly about nature. I also got a lot of new permas that I got easily attached to, splurging my savings into dressing them. I love keeping dragons and feeling like I saved them from being exalted or something.
Oh I also keep all the dragons that remind me of dreams Ive had, or have ellegiac auras. Its such a weird nostalgic feeling looking at them, but also very subjective x3
Now that I think about it, it seems that im trying to make my lair an extension of my dreams realm. No wonder that I ended up moving to arcane!

Well, I don't have hundreds, but I have a bit over 100 so I think my lair counts! For me, potential permas just need some unique quality that grabs my attention.

[*]Maybe it's a bit of lore that someone forgot to erase (like this guy, who came with subspecies lore and is the only one of his kind).
[*]Maybe it's a cool color combo (like this gal and half my lair, slated for exaltation)
[*]Maybe it's from a project I completed and have grown attached to (like this guy and his mate, used to get a very specific color combo... and now I'm having a hard time selling/exalting them because I've grown attached).
So yeah. My lair will no doubt grow as time goes on, and I'm already at the point where I had to hibden a bunch of my permas because I acquired so many new dragons. But tbh I'm okay with that! I wanted a large town/small city for my lair, and a huge population helps with that.
As for keeping things straight, I write lore in their bios to keep things organized. Lair tabs have been a lifesaver, and I keep a spreadsheet so I can track how many of each breed/element/etc I have.

I just want all the pretty dragons and no, I don't forget them. I visit the ones in my hibden regularly.

See pretty dragons, want dragons. Get a new idea? Get new dragon. Sentimentality plays a part too, there's lots that if I saw them today I probably wouldn't buy them but since I've had them for so long I'm kinda attached. But for the most part it's literally just as simple as I want.
Lore plays very little part of it for me actually.
I don't do 'aesthetics', I don't do g1's, I don't train fodder, or anything to limit myself. I don't do any of that. That way I don't get bored. I have complete freedom to grab any dragon that strikes my fancy. That isn't to say I don't occasionally get rid of a dragon, because I do- especially now that space is more limited. I just like having dragons, I guess.

I have a ton of permas just because I don't feel the need to downsize. I like a lot of dragons, so I'm gonna show a ton of them off! A good portion of my permas are in my den so I don't have to feed them or anything. And I have den space for hundreds of fodder, so it's pretty easy to make room for new permas even if I don't have any permas I'm thinking of getting rid of at that moment.
