*searches the primary color and secondary color I need for a fandragon*
oh cool this hatchling is the right flight, lemme just click this dragon-
aND IT'S ON THE AUCTION HOUSE-
*smacks buy*
*immediately panics on whether or not I should even make that fandragon in the first place because pffft who needs fandragons? or is this character worthy of making a fandragon of? yes they are, or are they? i need lair space why did I just do that. but i wouldn't have gotten the dragon otherwise. i should very much definitely make this fandragon. i want a fandragon aaaaaa*
welp. it's my dragon now. i can have a fandragon but at what cost? 10kt (not much) and my sanity (the value of this one varies)
do y'all ever just buy a fandragon and then instantly debate over whether or not you should actually make that character into a fandragon and whether or not the dragon was worth buying or am i just very indecisive

Bought a veilspun. Needed a wildclaw. Didn't realize the wildclaw scroll thing until I got attached to the dragon. Veilspun didn't even have the exactly colors I needed but I'm in too deep now. >:,).

I do my debating beforehand usually and typically end up with 'oh but I won't do the character justice I'd better just not...'
I have a grand total of two (2) fandragons and both came from extensive breeding projects [emoji=skydancer deadpan size=1]

I don't impulse buy without a plan in mind, but then again think I have a weird process haha
I tend to make batches of ~10 fandragon plans in the dressing room at once. Then i put the characters who I've made plans for into a spreadsheet, so I can track the exact status of the projectm
Here's part of my spreadsheet and a key of the statuses to go along with it

(¥ = I need to buy a G1 or start a breeding project for the plan)
(% = I have an active breeding project for the plan underway)
(# = I have a dragon for the plan in storage, but have not started work on them yet)
(* = The dragon is in my main lair and I can now apply genes to them)
( " = The dragon is in my main lair and I can apply genes to them, but I should prioritise dragons makes with a *)
(The dragons in the cut-off row are those off least priority, they will likely be the last projects I finish)
After I made a plan I do impulse buy the dragons to go with it though haha- I ended up buying 5 new additions just this weekend. I find it really fun trying to look for a G1 that not only perfectly matches a character, but a pre- made plan too.
It also means I don't feel bad impulse buying since it was something I was planning to get at some point anyway :)

Do it in reverse. Plan the fandragons you want, down to the smallest outfit detail. Then go to the AH. If you have made a whole thing, then you know you want it and don't need to feel bad about buying it.

never. no regrets. only dragons

Misread the title as bullying fandragons, but yeah. Sometimes even on impulse, no prior plans for genes breed or colors, just “yeah this dragon reminds me of them”

oh definitely, but it ends up being;
scry an outfit for the fandragon, go and search the ah for a g1 that at least vaguely fits the colours I have in mind, and then either cant find one and keep checking until I do, or find one pretty quickly that works decently enough
and then spend the next while or so overthinking whether or not I should actually buy it, what if a better option comes up, what if I regret it, maybe I shouldn't buy another project when I'm tired and about to go to sleep-
and then usually just end up buying them then and there

I already made the outfit slightly more than a week ago! The conflict was about "is this silly fandragon worth my lair space and why am I making this character into a fandragon?"
I guess she was a fairly easy fandragon to make, with matchy colors and the eyes kinda match as well.
The other fandragon I'm making, on the other hand? Needs to be an XYX (a specific color combo however, not just XYX) permababy obelisk with stained. At least it doesn't have to be a gen1! And it'll probably be a lot harder to find this one because it's three colors I want rather than two, and it has to be stained (a gem gene), and he needs to be given a scroll of eternal youth. Oof.

I don't typically think about if something is "worthy" to be a fan dragon, I mean I have fan dragons of properties/characters I don't even like. Why? Why not.
