What makes a gem gene, a gem gene? I'm curious on how the different categories of genes are decided.

seems pretty much just whatever they decide it to be.
since it's all sorts of coverage and styles.

since i see people saying something like shiny things, but then you have pet/but, stained, circuit and a variety of ancient tertiaries.

is very likely to take your posts literally - has difficulty discerning if tone is joking
potentially the work that goes into the genes?

Yes it's the work that went into them. Heavy detail = gem gene.

Or browse some Old Oaks for sale?
Detail/complexity level and how much it stands out from other genes makes sense to some degree, (though flaunt/flair really doesn't fit that) but honestly it might just be timing too. It's been a while since we got a gem pair. Maybe this is one of the ones that was near completion in the right timeframe that staff though was most suited to the gem MP?

Honestly I'm really glad to see flau/flai and now pha/sar buck the trend of gem gene=sparkly shiny and treasure=matte colors. I hope that keeps happening, I don't want a whole category of genes limited to one side of the marketplace.

Edit: also I really want to see some gem genes that are lower rarity and cheaper, and some treasure genes that are higher rarity and cost more. It's odd that treasure genes have so much price variation but gem genes all price out the same for pri/sec/terts.

It costs gems.

I really doubt there's anything correlation to effort, considering Stained is... A gem gene. And Jaguar/Rosette are not, since I would thing drawing that pattern is labor intensive. If it seems like it would sell well as a gem gene, does not offer anything that any other genes don't (Peacock was the first two toned tert, not Koi), and it's been long enough for a gem gene to be reasonable, then it can be a gem gene. That's my guess, anyways.

I have a few questions that may not be related to the thread but I want to ask anyway.
Would dragons from plentiful breeds (with gem genes mind you) sell as much as limited/rare breeds with gem genes? Is breed even considerated into the equation?
I'm quite new here so I don't know much, I've been seeing some hatcherys on the Dragon Sale forum and most of them have no plentiful breeds, why is that?

I think it's a mix of the level of detail and possibly the fact that we haven't had a new gem gene set in a little bit. I used to think it was shininess, but with flair/flaunt being treasure genes that's probably not the case. I could be wrong though, so we wouldn't know unless someone from the team told us for sure
@DreamerEternum Welcome to FR! To answer your questions, the dragon market is so saturated that there is no difference in price between plentiful and rare breeds. The only difference that can generally increase a regular dragon's price are the rareness of the colour combos, and the newness of it's features.

If the breed/genes of a dragon were recently introduced, such as Pharoah/Sarcophagus being released today, dragons with these traits will sell with a large amount as the players who can afford to will gene a pair to make babies that they can sell for a huge amount. After the initial high prices, they will lower to a reasonable level, but this can sometimes takes months.

As for hatcheries, since they are entirely player made, a player may prefer to have hatcheries with breeds they prefer, so if you don't see hatcheries with plentiful breed pairs, that's just personal preference. If you want to ask about more things, you can shoot me a PM :)
