now that it seems like we're getting familiars again for april fools, i'm once again thinking about dynamic familiars and how much i miss the way they used to work
for those who don't know what i'm talking about, there's a bunch of familiars:
[item=phoenix][item=ultimate buttersnake][item=regenerating reedjumper]
[item=which waychunk][item=which waychip][item=supernal brightbeast]
which cycle through a number of images, rather than just having the one static image like most familiars.
the 2018 april fools familiars were the first dynamic familiars but they functioned differently prior to the dragon page rework of 2020 - rather than actively cycling through the different images, the picture would randomly change on refresh.
to me, this was a much nicer system since the cycling is really distracting and actually takes away from the fun of their gimmick. i'm not sure if it'll ever happen, but i do kinda wish we could return to the old system somehow since it imo fits the familiars much better (especially since it was originally introduced with april fools familiars!)
so basically my point is: which system do you prefer? the current one where they actively change or the old one where they change upon refreshing?

Phoenix
Familiar
A fiery bird of indeterminate age.

Ultimate Buttersnake
Familiar
Yes, you can have it all.
500
Regenerating Reedjumper
Familiar
Long-standing scientific journalism has stated that this species of frog can only regenerate 12 times, but that has recently been proven false.

Which Waychunk
Familiar
A mystical coagulation of what looks to have been an ancient shattered waystone.

Which Waychip
Familiar
A mystical coagulation of what looks to have been an ancient shattered waystone.
400
Supernal Brightbeast
Familiar
With glowing horns that wax and wane with the phases of the moon, the supernal brightbeast is a wonder, even to dragonkind.

I like the old system too. It's too distracting and always catches me off-guard when I'm flipping through dragons to bond with familiars. I guess I find it changes images too fast for my liking.
I can't wait to finish awakening them so I can them shove them in my hoard and never use again. Right now I just have the Brightbeast left to awaken, but that'll probably change with Marva's new two.

I much preferred the old system. While I like the concept of dynamic familiars, the constant cycling we have now is way too distracting (at least for me it is). The main focus should be the dragon on the page, not the movement catching my attention to the right of it.

Old system, hands down. I'm fine with the new system in places like the game database where I might be looking for "what forms does this familiar even have?" but on the dragon's page it's just distracting and too fast for me.

I really miss the old system as well
it was always kind of a nice little surprise to see which state one of these familiars would be in when you click on the corresponding dragon
now I couldn't care less about it with the constant switching

I agree with everyone else so far. The constant switching drives me up the wall and I really wish they'd go back.
Never got to see it but that old system sounds so much better.
Don't fear failure. Fear being in the exact same place next year as you are today.
Old system! It's a shame, the effect on the new one looks great, and it might've taken a fair bit of work to get running. But yeah, it's pretty distracting, and IMO simultaneously takes away some of what makes the familiars special (since you can see everything they are at one static-looping go) while making them too special; dragons don't move, apparel doesn't move, scenes don't, skins don't, 99% of familiars don't, but those six do.
