TOPIC | Retire / Revise NotN

I've been here since 2014, and have watched this site grow with a lot of excitement over the years! There have been fantastic familiars, genes, breeds, and community growth, and I'm almost never disappointed by all the hard work the devs put into this site. When NotN was first introduced, I was beyond excited!

However, it's been on my mind for the past few years or so that NotN has become... huge. It's easily one of the biggest "festivals" on the site, with dozens of apparel, familiars, etc. being added with each consecutive year. If you look at the encyclopedia page for the event, the list of items to earn is a mile long and it's kind of insane!

While I'm a fan of the event, my concerns have risen each new year with how daunting it can be trying to get all the new items when old items are still in the loot table, and it can take QUITE a bit of time to dedicate to this site for the collectors out there.

This in and of itself isn't really the problem-- I don't mind grinding on this site, and collecting is fun! However, my concern over NotN is that it's in December, right during major holidays for many people.

Originally, FR made many statements about why there weren't twelve flights, and we just have eleven. One of the main reasons was to avoid twelve elemental festivals, and allow players (and devs!) a break month during the year to relax, step away from the site, and spend time with loved ones. NotN has... pretty much abolished that. It takes far more time to try and collect new items in December than it does for any other festival in the year, and it has become a stressful event for me. It has lost a lot of it's magic.

I know I could always step away from the event and just buy the items later, but that isn't really a solution for the problem, just a solution for me as an individual. I'd like to propose we either retire the NotN event (not a fan of this option personally), or revise how it works, like retiring old items as we do for festivals.

I just wanted to bring this up for discussion and see what other people think / how you all feel about the NotN event.

i love NotN.
i make SO MUCH MONEY it's absolutely nonsensical.

is very likely to take your posts literally - has difficulty discerning if tone is joking
I worry about NotN being offputting to newer players, with that amount of STUFF to keep track of. I wouldn’t mind just a subset of old items being present in any given year.

hmm I actually didn't know that the month without festivals was supposed to be a break month! I'd like to see some of the older items have reduced drop rates in favor of new ones. A lot of the apparel actually dropped so much that I was still melting it down months later-

I love NOTN and the money possibilities- and seeing all the users come back for this big event is a lot of fun! definitely interested in seeing if drop rates can be reworked to favor less grinding for new stuff. (though I think this was already in effect for last year? all the new apparel aside from the marketplace/Baldwin ones have dropped considerably.)

:D Staff are actually working on making NotN more mangeable for new users. We'd hate to see it retired though. Taking something away should never be a solution :c

Night of the Nocturne is a yearly event revolving around the Nocturne breed, enchantment, and mimicry that takes place at the end of December. It's one of our most popular events and grows every year. At this time, there are nearly 400 items unique to Night of the Nocturne. The number of items exclusive to the event makes this a huge holiday with a significant collection backlog, especially for new players.

The size of this event grows every year with the addition of new content. Between familiars, apparel, scenes, and vistas last year, we added 68 new items! We love that there's new content each year to make Night of the Nocturne an interesting and engaging event for our returning players; but the size of it has become something that's quite incredible and maybe approaching unmanageable for players who haven't been here from the start.

Going forward, we would like to continue to add new items to each year's celebration of NotN, but we would like to have the amount that we add be reduced. (for example, 25 new items each year instead of nearly 70.) We can redirect our event content efforts towards a new event - something that's not quite as stuffed with items from years' of the event's history.

What this means: Night of the Nocturne will continue to run each year and have new items added, but at a slower pace, as the event already has an enormous amount of content.

Festive Favors & Event Shops

Our team is still continually refactoring Flight Rising's codebase, and the elemental festival shop of Festive Favors is still running on older ("legacy") code. When we refactor this area, we plan to dedicate development time toward creating a flexible system that can be used for a variety of timed shopkeepers, which can be used for new events such as Warrior's Way as well as potentially existing events that could use an update. We don't have an estimated completion time for this type of feature, so expect more information from us next year.

The devs have already said they're scaling back the amount of apparel/fams added for NotN, and they added more ways to acquire chests that don't depend on coli grinding. I don't really have an opinion either way on retiring some of the old stuff, but definitely do not retire the event itself.

I actually think they're already taking steps to fix the problem. The amount of new goods we got last year were much, much lower, and the drop rates have been corrected to accommodate for new items, if I remember correctly? Most are purchasable, anyway, but I get that that might not be as accessible to new players as it is for me (I'm a 2014 player, too!).

Retiring the event definitely is not a solution, but I can say that last year's NotN definitely felt a lot more accessible when it came to strange chests. Being ill all December left me with little to no time to grind, but being able to do my basic dailies (bond with active familiars, trading post stuff, and gathering) was enough to let me get all the new items fairly easily. It did help that there were fewer this year!

like others, they have said they are scaling it back last year i believe. it really is overwhelming for both them and players i think. i wouldn't want it retired. but if it slowly fades into the shadows and just becomes like a whole month casual thing (instead of a two week insanity) that would be cool imo

[/quote] yeah basically this. if notn was retired it might put me off from fr entirely. it's one of my favourite times of the year (i literally look forward to it more than i do real life christmas).

I understand your position, but I personally disagree. I've only had two Night of the Nocturnes and yeah, the first one was extremely overwhelming and I got almost nothing out of it. But one of the appeals of the festival to me is that if you don't get the exclusive items one year they will be there every other year again (plus, most get very cheap in the AH by the end of the event if you don't have time to find them). I get it it can be stressful trying to collect everything but I really think starting to retire old NOTN items would make this stress much worse, not better.

Also, not sure if you're aware but staff have already started introducing less items per NOTN less year specifically to slow down the increase of the already huge pool! Not exactly a solution to your isssue since it doesn't reduce the pool, but it's something. Edit: oops sorry everyone already said this dsajdak it took me a bit to type this comment!

Though if the size of the pool is the problem, maybe instead of reducing it we could have a NOTN equivalent of Joxar? Having some way to, for example, trade a certain amount of the special food items for a specific new item you want? That would remove some of the frustration of grinding and only getting stuff you already have/don't want without making those older items inaccessible to new players.
