TOPIC | Is there a canon reason familiars retire
It dawned on me is there a reason in the canon lore of flight rising that there are some familiars that are retired, such as the boolean. I would guess maybe the species are extinct, especially in the case of like the Boolean which was released who knows how many years ago in flight rising universe years. Does anyone else have any ideas?

I think those familiars can either be extinct or there was a finite number of them created by the deities or whoever else, and it's a species that does not reproduce by itself. Booleans are sort of digital, so I can imagine a certain amount of them being created as robots or copies of a computer program. Sprites can be genderless/sexless creatures that are created by the deities to serve them without any intent for the sprites to multiply. Something like that!

canonically, I don't think it's ever been addressed.

I do like to hc that they're just really rare creatures that aren't easy to find let alone befriend so there's a "finite" amount existing in Sornieth that actually befriend dragons (those we own).

Otherwise, there could be a ton out there canonically, they all just work for whatever created them, like the sprites for the deities.

Other things like the Cog Frog/Boolean seem like a Lightning creation so perhaps only a limited amount were ever built and the blueprints lost.

The skycat and bonefiend are seem really reclusive/shy pose-wise imo so while we as players may never see more brought into the site, I'm sure in lore there are more scattered about the land.

It could also be that they're endangered or threatened species, for whatever reasons that could make them hard to find. I mean, in canon lore dragons did sort of drive out the beast clans from their homes, who's to say they didn't mess up the ecosystem and/or drive out other creatures like the familiars as well—accidentally or otherwise.

Extinction would be neat. Oops particularly feisty coliseum team annihilated their natural food source.

I kinda like the interpretation that they only exist in finite amounts and can't reproduce for whatever reason.

Regarding forum games, please only select dragons who have familiars - those are the permanent residents of my lair. Feel free to look through the hibernal den, too

I figure it might be the same reason there's only a few captive examples of certain species IRL. Not everyone owns a pet cheetah, or tiger, for example.

Some possible examples:
  • the familiar is part of an endangered species, and thus are difficult to find so they can be befriended.
  • the familiar species is, on the whole, too set in its ways to befriend a dragon.
  • the familiar is very dangerous to dragons, and thus befriending one is a risky endeavor most dragons would not want to attempt.
  • the familiar has very specific needs that are difficult for a dragon to meet, and without which they may suffer or even die, thus making that familiar a potentially expensive or time-demanding endeavor that a dragon may not want to undertake.
  • slightly different from the above, the familiar species exists only in a small part of Sornieth, and while their population may not be endangered, their so adapted to that particular environment that it's difficult or dangerous to remove them, and the environment is difficult to mimic enough so the familiar may be comfortable and thrive
  • the familiar cannot breed in captivity, and to obtain one, a dragon must befriend one from the wild (which can be difficult due to environment, numbers, etc.)
  • the familiar is considered by most dragons to be best observed free, in their natural habitats, rather than as a companion to a dragon, and thus most dragons prefer to admire from afar rather than attempt to befriend
  • the familiar species as a whole simply has no desire to befriend dragons, and thus when a dragon wins their friendship and companionship, it is a rare and unique event
  • the familiar has duties to their patron deity, and doesn't have time to befriend a specific dragon, making it a rare and unique thing when it does happen

I got a little carried away, but I think there are a lot of reasons certain familiars might, in game canon, be rare or even unobtainable and need not always be due to them being an endangered species.
