I've never been able to directly read the source to the post about Lightning vs Arcane = USSR vs. Cold War America even though it pops up as fact from time to time.
The exact quote goes (from this
secondhand source):

re: Arcane vs. Lightning
Those of you who have stated that Lightning and Arcane dragons would not get along are absolutely spot on to the intent behind the attitudes of the flight. If Arcane dragons are Cold War America, the Lightning flight are Cold War USSR, if that makes any sense. Both have the ability to seriously damage the world, only one has actually done so. Both seek to do the same things - become a superpower, become the most technologically advanced society on the planet, etc - but have very, very different thoughts about the best way to do that. Magic is a faith of sorts. Not a religion per se, but it's thought that belief in magic can make it stronger, and increase its effects on you for good or bad. Arcane are the most magically potent dragons around, and Lightning are arguably the least. Arcane believes in power through magic, Lightning believes in power through science.
If you'll remember, the first thing that happened when the gods were tossed from the pillar after the Arcanist inadvertently called down the Shade was the Stormcatcher dusting himself off, basically saying "Well, I knew that wouldn't work," and flying off to pursue more effective methods of keeping the Shade at bay, not through magic, but through engineering and invention.
You're also right in the intent behind Lightning and Fire. Both are heavily industrious, and would get along swimmingly.
This is a great thread by the way.
But it's not on the wiki, and despite reading quotes of the lore over and over, I can't find the true source or wider context.
(And no, clicking on the link inside that forum thread brings me to an error so I can't visit it)
So it's a royal pain.

Local Overthinker, He/Him, Pings and notifications are fine.
Well I wouldn't say it was ever canon, to me the text reads as a user coming up with this as a headconon, not an official response by a dev.

Flight rising lore is these days very vague when it comes to defining how Sornieth works. This might be a statement they wanted to retcon, or is misinterpreted.
And since the original author of the quote is unknown, consider it non canon.

agree with the previous comments, also i don't really see arcane as being like what's described in that quote? where's the info about them wanting to be a superpower? i got the impression that it was a chill, albeit study-ridden and full of radiation flight

original author was a former dev - but it should be noted that the quote is also very old (from 2013) and lore can change quite a lot over time!

JKSJGLKJKLDFGJl I remember having "Lightning is communist" in my head for like 6 years and I almost thought I had imagined it. Fire is very capitalistic, as seen in the BoTE story of Fire

It is an official quote:

As someone else said, FR lore has a lot of… interpretation in it. It’s also pre-BOTE but yeah
I think arcane vs Lightning is a thing considering how Lightning has destroyed their magic leg line sector thingy and made it into a reactor, and in the arcane BOTE story everyone blamed the Lightning mirror. But it’s been ages since I read the official lore so
Edit: just to specify, the reason said user isn’t part of the team anymore + account is locked is because some drama went down involving transphobia. If you look up their account name and flight rising you’ll see tumblr posts about it. Not going to go into detail here though

I love that idea! This thread introduced me to it (Even though I saw it much after it was posted) It makes so much more sense to have fire be the industrial + capitalistic one. I guess the only reason Lightning was made into that by the community was because the Stormcatcher is so obsessed with work lol

I don't know why it wouldn't still be canon, just because the info is older. A lot of the info I dig up from Q&As on the FR tumblr is just as old.

honestly considering the age of the post as well as the very different aim of the site nowadays, i think its safe to say that any real-world parallels certain parties were trying to make no longer apply.
