When making a fandragon, or turning an OC into a dragon, do you prefer to have everything visually match the character to the best of your ability, or do you prefer to deviate slightly for something that is more in the spirit of said character?
For example, an OC of mine is written to have extremely pale, grey eyes (Ice eyes best represent this) but it's far more thematically appropriate for him to be from Wind (and Wind Pastel is an acceptable alternative). I did after some debate make my choice (Ice), but I'm curious to see how others would approach this.

I usually just go with the closest thing I can afford lol [emoji=skull size=1]

I prefer to have them visually match. If it's an OC, I feel more willing to take liberties and experiment with the dragon for something that captures the feeling - but for an actual character from something, I prefer to visually match as closely as possible.

I try to match as close as I can but when making skins for them I go off track a little
Mainly cuz I don't want to get bonked for copyright infringement

vibes for sure. i use the canon designs as a basis but i am absolutely willing to change things up if the closest visual match doesn’t work out.
it does help that my main fandom is… pretty lenient in terms of designs and the interpretation thereof, that’s for sure. still, some of the dragons from the other fandoms i’m in are definitely designed more according to vibes than they are according to their actual canon designs.
also i don’t pay attention to eye colour in most cases

I match as closely as possible, though sometimes I’ll pick the breed based on vibes
Eye color is non-negotiable for me.

I prefer looks but when making characters that designs just. Do not translate to fr dragons well. Might as well do whatever looks best.

I only have one oc fan dragon myself but I prefer to get them to match as closely as possible.

i'm fine so long as the vibes match, its ALL about the vibes for me. getting close visually is a secondary but still important aspect though.

element-wise i'd go for the closest eye color possible, but for genes and apparel i usually go for the best vibe (esp bc for the most part there's hardly any apparel to match for my stuff).
a little off-topic, but i did some of my OCs in the sims 4 few days ago and i found some incredibly pretty make up and accessories and went "well... he doesn't wear make up canonically, but WHO'LL GONNA STOP ME"
it's fun and may lead to some exploration of the said character within their actual setting :D
