TOPIC | very useful guide for breeding projects

this is how i do it:
step 1: go into scrying workshop, and acquire obscenely expensive ideas
step 2: obtain some dragons you need for your new project
step 3: stick them in hibden to wait for breeding cooldowns to go away
step 4: absolutely do not write down at all what the dragons are for, you will remember what they are for :)
step 5: ???
step 6: realize half a year later that you have random dragons chilling in your hibden, and you have absolutely no clue what they were for

now kids, if you want to succeed in your breeding project, do not do what i do.
it will just make you sad.

replace the part 4 with writing down exactly what the dragon was for, and how you were planning to use the dragon, who is the intended pair, and what the goals were.
scrap parts 5 and 6 with actually achieving something in your project.
and maybe replace the "obscenely expensive ideas" in part 1 with "reasonably priced ideas for my wealth"

Step 1: Acquire dragons that aren't even remotely close to your final result because the colors you want do not exist on the site
Step 2: Breed them infinitely with no results
Step 3: Sell parents due to lack of results and motivation to wait a month just to be disappointed again

Step 1: Get an idea that don't exist, get parents with a range that covers what you want
Step 2: Breed them and end up with a bunch of their offspring in a slowly narrowing range
Step 3: Don't ever exalt them, because they might be useful for breeding the dragon you want quicker... you just need to buy them mates that don't exist either
Step 4: Buy more dragons to breed more mates
Step 5: End up with half your lair full of these random dragons that aren't what you want
Step 6: Run out of lair space, and lament

I have actually done this. At some point I bought a dragon for a breeding project—can’t imagine what unless she was a back-up mate with far-off colors—and stated as much in her bio, but I didn’t specify what project she was for. Couldn’t find any matching scries, either.

All that to say: I agree. Put down that the dragon’s for a project and what dragon they’ll be breeding for.

1: make plan
2: buy some dragons with genes that have decent-ish odds to give desired genes and have some chance to get the color you need. Not that it matters, because you can breed ivory with marigold and get three flippin' ivories, even though they have a range of five colors between them.
3: get tired of cooldowns, buy a bunch more dragons with some stupidly bad range and a vague chance of genes in the vicinity of end goal.
4: run out of room to hatch nests.

...

...

...

47: lose track of who is related to who.
48: shove some in den, sell some, exalt some.
49: eventually figure out you had a decent pair all along.
50: ... pretty fodder babies.

i've got a similar pipeline, but instead of forgetting what i was going to do with them it usually ends up being 'rots in hibden for years because can't afford expensive scry genes' haha

I justify it by using them as fodder breeding pairs, at least, but oof… breeding projects take forever when you are me.

For what it's worth, I find the little message-annoumce-thing on dragon pages fantastically useful for breeding projects. If you look at my Breeding Project tab, you can see what goal colors any given dragon is helping to get, and also how far away they are from the goal (for example, "Ivory/Gold/Maize 0/1/0" is a kid who I got recently, who is Ivory/Metals/Maize).

...also, while I'll keep some project-reject kiddos if they're reasonably close to the goal, usually I use 'em as fodder to help pay for everything and keep my space as free as it's gonna be.
