TOPIC | Video game recommendations?

I need something new to play, a new game to get into, a new franchise to love. My gaming library is pitifully small, considering I've been playing games for ten years now.

Anyone got any recommendations?

I have a PS3, Wii U and a 3DS.

Favourite genres include platformer, adventure, action and RPG. The longer the game lasts, the more engaging the story, the bigger the world and the more heartbreaking the characters, the better. :D

Favourite games are:
  • Okami
  • Dark Souls
  • Dragon's Dogma
  • Pokemon Black, Platinum and Alpha Sapphire
  • Sonic Colours
  • Super Mario Galaxy
  • Kirby Triple Deluxe

I can recommend a few for your 3DS.

Okamiden-sequel to Okami for the ds
Radiant Historia- a kind of hard to find game, but the game is quite long and has a good story.
Any of the recent Monster Hunter games if you enjoy a game that revolves around hunting monsters.

Hope that helps

i definitely recommend fire emblem awakening for 3ds.
its a turn based rpg and the characters are AMAZING and really engaging.
its really character oriented and you get to create your own avatar and get married and have children. each character has unique conversations with each other and you even get to choose who the other characters marry as well.
other than that the gameplay is really fun and the cutscenes are really pretty! there's a demo for in in the 3ds store c :

King's Field was From Software's dungeon gig before Dark Souls happened, it's harder. Also you'll probably enjoy the pre-Persona Megami Tensei games: the SNES remake of 1+2 and all Shin Megami Tensei games are translated one way or another (mostly fan translations).

Also try looking into Roguelikes. My favorites are Dungeons of Dredmor, Shiren The Wanderer: Mystery Dungeon 2 (SNES version fan translated, DS version officially localized), Cave Noire (fan translated), and Azure Dreams (Roguelike plus monster raising, both PS1 and GBC are good).

All of these can be emulated if you can't find them on the Virtual Console or PSN. Dredmor is Windows/Mac/Linux.

My writing project.
you should try the professor layton series if you haven't already. they're a ton of fun and have great stories & character design.

I'm going to be suggesting a few, since I'm a Nintendo fangirl, so sorry if you've already played some of these.

Seconding the Fire Emblem recommendation. Pretty much any game in that series is a gem (except maybe Shadow Dragons, it's not bad, just bogged down by old mechanics and such). Awakening is on the 3DS and Blazing Sword is on the Wii U Virtual Console (I think? It's just called 'Fire Emblem' in English).

I highly suggest paying attention Xenoblade Chronicles X when it comes out and maybe look at getting a copy of Xenoblade Chronicles (it's on the Wii, and is a bit pricey in the states at least, so that's always a problem). It's a huge rpg with an amazing story with well written characters to go along with it. X is made by the same team, obviously, so I wouldn't expect any less.

Golden Sun, another Virtual Console game, is a lovely turn-based rpg made by a Nintendo subsidiary company in the vein of Final Fantasy. It has puzzles reminiscent of Zelda and an interesting world set up. For now, only the first one is available on the Wii U, the second has listings in Europe, so it'll probably hit the shop soon, and the third one is on the DS.

A bit of a different tone from the games you've said you liked, but there's a relatively unknown series on the DS/3DS called Zero Escape. It's a puzzle game/visual novel hybrid with an interesting cast of characters and an extremely gripping story. The DS one is called 9 Hours, 9 Persons, 9 Doors, and the 3DS one is called Virtue's Last Reward.

Finally for my Nintendo recs, there's a DS game called the World Ends With You. It's an rpg that uses this 2D street art meets manga meets American comic book art style, and I personally love the characters and the story.

Last but not least, maybe check out Ni No Kuni? It's a PS3 game that was made in conjunction with Studio Ghibli. It's a pretty solid rpg, not my favorite, but still might be worth looking into.

Let's see... I can only talk about 3DS things, and I recommend you research them before you decide on anything, but.

Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate: It was just recently released for 3DS and I enjoy it quite a lot. Fighting big monsters feels like Dark Souls at some points, but there is quite a bit of grinding involved to get the necessary parts for armor and weapons, so I'd steer away from MH if you're not into that; you can spend a lot of time with it though - I believe I read that the average time for a complete playthrough of the previous MH game was around 700 hours or so.

Fire Emblem Awakening: It's a turn-based RPG and it is pretty good, though lots of the characters are kind of flat or just not presented very well. You do get an Avatar unit, and there is a marriage system which makes it basically 'Shipping: The Game'. The combat does feel nice though, and in contrast to older FE games you can grind forever and reclass as many times as you want, so there really aren't useless characters. It has a lot of DLC too.

Etrian Odyssey: Any EO game, really. It's a dungeon-crawler and it is pretty unforgiving, so if you're into that, you might like it. A notable feature is that you have to draw the map yourself.

I don't have a Wii U, so I haven't played the games personally, but.

Super Smash Bros. 4: If you are into brawlers, I guess.
The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD: It's a HD remake of LoZ: WW. I believe I heard it's pretty good ?

Is your ps3 backwards compatible? I grew up with the ps2 so a lot of my favorites on up there.

If you have a DS though, pick up Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow.

Holy balls it's so much fun collecting all the souls beating the crap out of all the unique monsters. So satisfying.

If your ps3 IS backwards compatible, see if you can get your hands on one of the .Hack games! G.U is better gameplay wise, but I have nostalgia glasses on so I automatically like .Hack//INFECTION more.

You want heartbreaking characters? Go for anything Bioware. If you haven't played the Dragon Age or Mass Effect series, I highly recommend them! (But perhaps avoid the DA fandom if you're sensitive to fandom fights lol)

Both series are available on PS3, I'm pretty sure.

I'm going to recommend the Rune Factory series, especially the latest one, RF4. It's got farming, dungeon crawling, monster basing AND taming, and a lovable cast of characters, some of which you can marry if you want (some of the marriage quests are downright heartbreaking). You can also craft your own weapons and whatnots. The main ones are for the DS, but there's two console games too.

I'm going to third that recommendation for FE:A, I found it to be an excellent game.
