~WARNING~ I just saw SW7 again (saw it Thursday night too, and going to see it on the 27th as well, HELP I'M ON A DOWNWARD SPIRAL OF ADDICTION WHAT DO I DO!?!) and I need people to talk with about this movie yo! Many of my friends haven't seen it yet/are asleep atm, and just I don't know what to do with myself right now!! I'm also partially shocked there isn't already a spoilers friendly discussion thread up... Unless I somehow missed it on my search through GD. xP Anyhow, tell me what ya'll think! I can tell you one thing, it was nice seeing the old cast back, but DAYM to I love, love, love the new characters. Rey, Fin, BB-8 and Poe, and ESPECIALLY Kylo Ren! Though, I can't help but notice that most people either love Kylo Ren, or hate him. I dunno, I guess I just have a weakness for morally conflicted antagonists, that have potential for redemption. Also that nose and those lips, and that hair.... glorious. But I digress, please, someone come talk about this movie with me before I explode. >.>

I watched it but I'm probably not the best person to talk to about it since I was so exhausted I fell asleep during it

Wow that's quite an achievement :P

@Mystique
I think I've seen an SW spoiler thread at some point but it's probably buried deep by now.

Let's just say that today I've been to see it for the second time and I'm for sure going to see it at least once more. The addiction is real. Don't ask me what to do, I have no idea, I'm with you on this one :/
Love the new characters as well. Plot was too similar to A New Hope. But. I didn't care about that for one, very simple reason.

KYLO REN WHY U SO PERFECT
*ahem* yeah. I might be juuuust a bit obsessed. Just a bit. I've noticed the polarizing effect he has on people as well, a lot of people on the internet really dislike him... And the rest is firmly in the "I <3 Kylo Ren" camp. Either because he is genuinely great as a villain (conflicted, easy to relate to, redemption potential, intentionally shown as very human) or because, you know, that hair. Erm.

@Karaeir

Yeah, I did notice they borrowed a little too heavily from the plot to A New Hope, but I have a theory that they did that as a way to ease in some of the original fans to the new movie. I hope that from here on out they start veering towards new stories entirely.
I think that bumping off some of the old characters is also in line with that. :(

I mean, I threw an internal temper tantrum when Han died, but part of me was expecting it. They are going to want to slowly phase out the old cast so that the new cast can have bigger roles (it was criminal how little of Poe was in the movie, but hopefully we get more of him in the next.)

Aaaaand, I have a feeling that the Kylo Ren hate camp might mostly hate him because of Han Solo actually.
I mean, don't get me wrong, it was pretty terrible, but folks can't deny they have built a very layered, interesting villain :3

I must be getting old. My usual first thought on seeing Kylo Ren would typically have been "Oo! Nice hair!" Alas, it actually was, "Oh, dear. That poor child has a very unfortunate nose."

Overall, I did like him as a villain and I'm looking forward to further character development. I think I'd have to say that Finn was my favorite new character, though.

The movie as a whole was good and I look forward to seeing it again.

I think that Kylo's hate camp is his hate camp less because of Han and more because they expected something else of a villain? You know, they just wanted a powerful, easy to hate dark figure. I often see them really hating his temper tantrums and how young and immature he seems sometimes. They just got a lot more complexity than they were prepared to deal with, I guess.
...and he does look young. I knew how the actor looked before I watched the movie, and I was still shocked when he removed his helmet. Not that I'm complaining, honestly it's just one more thing to add to my list of "reasons why I want to hug Kylo Ren".
I've also seen some (very rare and far between, mind you) opinions that the actor hasn't quite sold it. Obviously I disagree :P

I fear that sticking too close to ANH plot might have actually caused some die hard fans to dislike this movie. One guy I went to see it with was very disappointed and angry that it wasn't COMPLETELY ORIGINAL, 100% true to lore and still somehow 100% Star Wars. I honestly don't know what he was expecting and I think that he holds the old trilogy on a bit too high pedestal.

Agree on the Poe issue. Also, PHASMA. Another criminally underused character with great potential.

The funny thing with the people who don't like Kylo Ren is that a lot of people I've talked to about it don't like him because "he wasn't Vader"; he wasn't menacing enough, wasn't evil enough etc. etc.

Well correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe Snoke emphasized that Ren wasn't fully trained yet? We've only just encountered this guy at the beginning of his path to the Dark Side.

Also this guy led a group that butchered every single Jedi student and caused the most powerful Jedi Master to retreat from everything and everyone. If that's not Vader-level evil, I dunno what is.

People keep saying Kylo Ren is ugly, which I don't understand because he just looks like a regular person (and I loved his hair to death).

I found it sadly ironic when Han told him he didn't need the mask, but after he and Rey fight, her lightsaber gives him a huge scar on his face. He'll have a reason to wear the mask now :(

@WiseGirl
I suppose that "ugly" is a misleading word. Because yes, he looks like a normal person (and it's great), but I still find him quite handsome. In a way a random guy on the bus might be handsome. Except for his hair, that's some fabulous hair. And nice eyes. Way above most "cute guys on the bus". But anyway, maybe everyone is just too used to the hollywood type of beauty. It's like with models, who are already naturally beautiful and yet still have to wear a ton of make up and be photoshopped to absurdity. Too high standards across the board?

And now I'm sad about the irony of that scar :( At least he hasn't lost a hand, that would have been too much to bear.

(funny how this thread evolved, in part thanks to me [sorry not sorry] from "general Star Wars" to "but Kylo Ren's fabulous hair")

EDIT: I've just read an article (not going to link it since it's not in English) which was a heavy critique of Kylo Ren... And the author's reasons for hating him as a villain were pretty much the same reason I and many other have for loving him as a character (youth, indecisiveness, weakness, generally having actual personality and issues instead of being "evil mcbadguy"). So yeah. That's a thing.
