TOPIC | Why should I play Undertale? Spoilers OK
1 2
I keep hearing all this hype about Undertale, but what's so good about it? Tell me why I should check it out. I don't mind spoilers. Sometimes a good spoiler is all it takes to get me interested.

The plot and characters are a nice balance between serious and comical, there are multiple gameplay paths and endings, unique "battle" system (to get the best ending you have to actually avoid killing anything), a great soundtrack, the main character is gender neutral and referred to as they/them, there are TONS of secrets, and though the fourth wall gets broken QUITE often it's used very well and it's VERY effective.
Also the ending made me tear up a little and I usually don't cry over games.

edit:
Honestly it's a game that's best to go into 100% blind for the best effect. More often than not it leads to being pleasantly surprised.
Here are a couple of my favorite tracks from the OST, though.

@Brokenwing This doesn't even require words. This basically sums it all up, except this game destroys your emotions and kicks you in the feels repeatedly. Also, there's many many endings possible, and they each are unique and great. Just play it, no need to hesitate. Note: Luckily, these pictures don't spoil the plot, but I really hope they get you interested enough to play. JOIN THE CAUSE.

its very well done! It touches on lots of emotions (youll laugh, youll cry, etc), there's so many little secrets and easter eggs to find, the characters and plot are both really well written, the dialogue is hilarious, the bosses are really cool (and each enemy has a different bullet hell sort of puzzle thing that you have to do), the music is amazing (if u like metal I HIGHLY recommend the metal covers of undertale songs on youtube), lots of A+ puns, genuinely entertaining puzzles, really endearing artwork... the list goes on :V

when I got to the true ending (aka the pacifist run) I felt kinda loved :') I felt like my brain was getting a big hug from my favorite person, it's just a very positive experience and I didn't want it to be over. I feel like not wanting it to be over is a pretty telltale sign of a good story regardless of the medium it's told in (be it a game/movie/book/whatever). Undertale definitely evokes that feeling.

OF COURSE, that's only the pacifist ending I'm talking about. I don't have the heart to do a no mercy run, nor am I interested in it. This game made me genuinely care about the characters and I couldn't bring myself to hurt them, lol. It doesn't at all have to be a cutesy, positive, awesome experience tho... from what I've heard from ppl and the few let's plays I've skimmed through, it pretty much turns into a horror game in the no mercy run. And the bosses are way cooler. >:)

tl;dr you should play it for the same reason anybody plays a game. cause it's fun :^)

Its cheap, short and very replayable and makes an attempt to make the JRPG formula interesting without getting too repetitive.

The thing I like about it is that you can get through the whole game without actually fighting/killing anyone. You can murder everyone in sight, too, of course, which is kind of the default for about 99% of games these days. The neat twist with Undertale (other than offering a no-kill option in the first place), is that depending on which route (or routes) you go and how emotionally invested you tend to get in things, if you DO decide to kill people, you might end up feeling really horrible and guilty about it. Or so I've heard. I... can't do that, myself. But I also spent weeks falling in love with the characters through the fanart, gifs, and other things people have been posting to tumblr.

Another thing that sets the game apart is that it remembers. If you kill some/all of the characters and then go back and play again... the game knows what you did. The dialogue will change. Some of the characters will remember things. You aren't going to get away with it. And trying to delete all trace of it is very tricky to accomplish.

As others have said, the characters are fun and clever, too. I like the silliness, but there's depth to it as well. Gameplay is pretty basic and relies a lot on reflexes (which is one of my weakest points), but if you can manage that it's definitely worth a look. If the game is too expensive for you right now (it's $10 on Steam) you can always try waiting for a sale. Or finding an addicted friend/benefactor willing to gift you a copy. ;)

your actions have consequences(very specific ones) and you cant just reset. if you do a second run, your actions from the first run still affect you. its pretty cool.

Everybody should try Undertale especially because there's a free demo on Toby's official Undertale site I believe so you can try that out if you are not sure. (At least that's what my friend told me, and my friend wouldn't lie to me... Right?)

@Onslaught
Dark Souls is a good game, I've been intentionally avoiding info about 3 so I can play it blind and suffer. I still wish sony would stop its death grip on Demons' Souls and get it ported to PC.
