TOPIC | character tropes you hate?

you ever notice a pattern in your hated characters? maybe cliches and stupid tropes?

for me, i can't stand "clumsy" characters. they're always like "oh no i'm so useless i keep tripping on everything but maybe senpai will notice and help me" like b**ch no you're gonna end up in the hospital before you get a chance with senpai. (this is common with females but i would definitely hate a clumsy male as well.)

also female characters that are super creepy to other females. if they were a guy it would've caused more of an uproar, but because they're both girls they're clearly lesbians that were made for each other.

to add to that: yanderes. nuff said.

one more i just remembered: characters that are super loud and obnoxious. some of them are okay, but for the most part they're really annoying and very unrelatable to me.

nerd boy who has hot woman fall in his lap trope annoys me so much. Not exactly a character trope tho

Completely oblivious MCs. This is really common in those love genre or whatever anime, and it annoys the hell out of me. Like, come on. It's extremely obvious that the person likes you. JUST USE YOUR SMARTS, OR ARE YOU TOO OBLIVIOUS TO THAT, TOO? Sometimes, this completely oblivious character is smart, too, which doesn't make one bit of sense.

I also hate characters that are helpless. All they do is sit in a corner or let whatever happen to them hoping that the MC or whatever will save them. My god, they need to stand up for themselves. This is really common in females.

That one character that always gets in the way of my ship. You know love triangles, and how there's the ship that will obviously happen and the other one just to slow down the main one (and maybe even win some shippers over)? It annoys me, and keeps the story from going.

- Characters (or writers of characters) that use their tragic backstory as an excuse/justification for their terrible behavior. Always reminds me of that Brooklyn 99 gif -- cool motive, still murder.

- Characters that never grow or develop. I'm really tired of seeing the same mistakes and scenarios rehashed across multiple books/seasons all because the characters are apparently incapable of learning from their prior behavior.

- Protagonist Characters that never win. I get it, I'm supposed to sympathize with this poor person who has a difficult life. But when it reaches the point where literally nothing goes right for them, I generally just get irritated and drop whatever it is.

Mary Sues.
The (mainly female) characters who win at EVERY
SINGLE
THING
and have super cool abilities like invincibility and super strength.
They always look cool and have a tragic-super cool backstory.

@MagicInGreyscale the first one, oh man. that's why writing villains is so tricky because they usually do have sucky backstories and there's always a group of people that tries to redeem them with that.

"he's just a poor boy who never got to experience a mother's love! :("

that explains his behavior, but it does not and WILL NOT excuse it.

i get really annoyed with the "aromantic/asexual genius" trope. it seems like every aro/ace person has to be a coldhearted intellectual.....either that, or they're the extremely innocent childlike character.

I feel like every trope started out as a good basis for a character... and then was improperly used once or used to an extreme measure and now I can't STAND it.

For example, the "Sherlock-esque intelligence" trope is just so overused to me that the instant I see a character that's really smart and has the power of "deduction" I start to walk in the other direction.

Really tired of the Angel-in-the-Room trope. The nicest characters never survive and always die tragically for dramatic effect. Also the dead mom/missing dad trope in a lot of anime that don't have an explanation or 'they died in a car accident.'

manic pixie dream girls that ruin the male love interest's life but then it's all ok because they're happy together. it's not ok, he left his job for you and you work in a coffee shop. how ya gonna pay the rent for your giant studio apartment in new york??

also, fourth-wall breaking characters. deadpool is insufferable.
