TOPIC | Has anyone been to physical therapy?
1 2
My doctor recommended I start going to physical therapy because of a knee problem. Has anyone been before? How long do you spend with the physical therapist usually? My knee problem isn't too awful, not a sports injury or anything, but I have a weak leg that's causing me knee issues and I sort of lean on my stronger leg, which sets my whole body off.

I'm kind of nervous because I'm not very strong and I have anxiety so working with a physical therapist seems very daunting...

Any advice/shared experiences are hugely appreciated!!

@gupey I did some physical therapy for my back, I had to come two times per week and did exercices for one hour. I was supposed to do that for two years but I dropped after 2-3 month. School was already exhausting and I had to come right after it.

It's nothing bad really, it's like doing a serie of warming ups for a certain time.

@gupey What I did is after I dropped, I continued doing the exercies at home when school was over. If you have anxiety issues try to talk about it with your doctor or the person who does physical therapy (I don't how they're called in english) to have some exercices you can practice at home.

I went to physical therapy quite a few years back! For some reason I'm struggling to remember specifics but I'm pretty sure I went at least once a week for an hour or so. I went there for about half a schol year I think?

@gupey my boyfriend dislocated his arm, and a while later after it not really healing too well he went to physio. He only went for two sessions though and she gave him a lot of exercises to do. He got much better super fast! So it was definitely worth it!

If you're concerned, speak to a physio. Describe your problem and ask them to give you an estimate of how many sessions you'll need.

@gupey It will depend one what exercises and other things you'll need to fix your knee.

I'm going to physical therapy for chronic neck pain, about twice a week for six weeks. It takes about an hour to an hour and a half. They basically just tell you what exercises to do there and you do them, nothing major, and you will probably just be doing the same ones every week.

If they need to stretch your knee, then they'll have to touch you in that area. If that kind of thing makes you anxious, let them know. But most likely you'll just have to put up with it if they need to stretch or adjust your knee, but it shouldn't hurt. My physical therapist has to stretch my neck, which is super awkward because he's right above my face, but I got used to it and it's not too bad.

I'm not very motivated about the exercises I do at home, either, but because they help my neck feel so good I do them anyway. If the exercises make a big difference, then you'll be more motivated to do them, but it's mostly just something you have to get yourself in a habit of doing.

I hope this gives you some insight, and I hope everything goes well for you!

@gupey oohhh eeeeshhh three times a week for 8 weeks is a lot! But from what I've seen with physios, they can make quite the difference if you go to a good one!
