(first off, i will admit i posted this in a forum on gaia online first, but i can't seem to get people to talk there. so i'll try here where there are dragon/dino-lovers hopefully :P) so i've had a single-player game of Ark going for a while, been playing on the Island. i spawned in the south and have made a little base on top of a hill near the coast at the southern islets. i had collected several parasaurs, dilos, and even just yesterday finally managed to tame a pteradon and an iguanadon. i kept all these dinos chillin around my house so they could protect me if any malicious dinos showed up... well yesterday, like literally five minutes after finishing the tame on my first iguanadon, a stupid giant bird dino (therizinosaurus) wandered around my spike walls and started attacking all my dinos. i ran over and tried to hit it with my sword, but it literally killed every last one of my dinos AND me! i'm level 61 with chitin armor and the therizinosaurus was level 10!!! me and my dinos didn't even scratch the stupid thing. i'm so angry now and i kind of dont even want to play that save anymore. :C here's a picture of the big dumb op bird rex that killed me

i'm actually so mad, i hope this thing gets nerfed. it's not the first time it's rekt me. this and calicotherium, the giant horse-sloth thing. no me gusta but anyway, i'm looking to start playing on a PvE or casual server with others so i decided to come here and see if any of you guys were playing or knew some good servers. let me know! also feel free to share your stories of ark wreckage!

@yungmoose Sorry to hear that friend. Ark is a very savage mistress to ALL players. Even when you prepared, expect death. ALWAYS!

Now the therizinosaurus is a late game dino that rivals giant carnivores. It shreds through armor (like the bats), damages stone teir, and gathers everything. It's a very useful dino once tamed (if you have the time/tranqs for it). The Devs have worked on their aggro distance so, it's safer then before ^-^'

With that out of the way, they are my all time favorite dino (besides wolves and sabertooths). I tamed an couple before and I must say AUGGJGSDJKHG!!! They are a nightmare to tame in vanilla DX I spent 6hrs taming one on the 2x event. Just me.......waiting............and waiting............. But I was sooooo happy once I had her (named her Coma).

Fun Fact: I can't for the life of me be able to pronouce therizinosaurus so, I just call all of them Comas. Luckly my bf/teammate understands what I mean XD

Hm, how long have you been playing? Was your singleplayer modded (or atleast stat changed) or vanilla? Seems to me like you just started Ark. Most of your tames are very early game and without pen. Best thing is to find a location where you know what spawns and build a wall around your place. That way your dinos can roam freely without murder (different story with other players)

Ouch, that really sucks. Even more so if you play with the super slow vanilla taming rates (but I hope not hearing what a high level you were!)
I'm sorry to hear that. I'd probably ragequit that save too

I haven't played much Ark recently, not since that guy was added (or the sloth) so I can't comment on balance. But a lot of things are completely broken when they are new.
I like Ark but the devs have some ""interesting"" ideas of what balanced means.

I dunno if it will help any, but I used to like triceratops for early game defense. They are actually pretty good! Or at least, they used to be. They have decent health and damage, plus knockback.
They can be hard to tame though... I would honestly wait for one to get stuck in a tree. Dunno if that's been fixed yet or not.

My worst was shortly after gigas were added. I had a nice solo base on the east coast, not too far from the ice zone at the time. Just beyond a creek and waterfall.
Well, when gigas were added one spawned on the edge of the snowy coast and slowly started killing it's way down the coast towards my base. Over the course of a couple of days it was getting closer and closer as I added turrets and some defenses. I'd heard they were OP but I figured I'd be okay with thick stone walls, a bunch of turrets, three rexes, a spino, a bronto, and packs of carnos, raptors, argies, and all my egg dinos. I knew there would be losses but I do tame at 4x or something (I honestly don't remember) so it isn't horrible. My dinos were pretty high level too, and it was level 1.
Nope. It noclipped through the walls, destroyed almost my entire base (including the walss from the inside) and killed everything except the platform quetzal I was shooting it from.

I didn't play Ark for a few months after that and still haven't really gotten back into it.
I still really like the game, but gigas are ******** and I will never play without a mod that nerfs them again.

@icenice
i've actually owned the game for over a year and one of my friends recently bought the scorched earth dlc for me and i tried to play that with him but its so difficult that it's not even fun to me!!
i guess i've been taking the game ultra slow... cause i had some friends who played it hardcore before and were doing all the super late-game stuff, but i still like to be primitive and struggling i guess. i'm sort of trying to let myself enjoy it as long as i can, you know? that being said, i'm still probably a noob lol. but i enjoy the game :3

as for the taming rates and all that, i actually set the game's difficulty down a little heeeehe and like i lowered the taming time, increased the exp and gathering a bit, and other adjustments to make everything a little easier. but i dont have any mods installed. i tame parasaurs and dilos in bulk cause they're the easiest loooool.

i actually managed to take down a birdRex once with tranq arrows but i didn't have the resources to tame it so i just killed it. i will admit they're pretty interesting-looking and are obviously tough as nails so i'd love to have one eventually for sure :x and props to you for managing to tame one! :O

also i usually just look up how to pronounce the name on the Ark wiki :3 they're all based off real dinos so its neat to learn how to say it! it even has a link to someone just saying the dino name lol

( thair-uh-ZEEN-uh-SAWR-us )

but obviously i'm just gonna call em bird rex lol

@Ankokou
omg i'm so sorry what a disaster x_x i would have been ****** too!!

as for my character and all that, like i said up there^, i actually made everything a little easier. i had been running with this character for a while tho, was starting to explore the entire coast in the south.

i'd say the ark devs have definitely made things a lot better compared to when i played even a year ago, but some things are obviously still frustrating lol.. i just want to play my overly easy game and tame all the dino and build a cute fort lmao. let me live!

you know i did try to shoot a trike with my tranq arrows from a crossbow but they didn't do anything, even after 9 of them, so i gave up. i read online that you can just beat them with a club but i haven't worked up the courage to try that yet. dinos do still get stuck on things in the environment XD i often take advantage of this.

I would not recommend hitting a trike with a club. XD
You have to get too close and they headbutt you pretty far. Sometimes off cliffs or other places you'd rather not be.
Plus it's actually pretty hard to knock out larger dinos with a club without killing them, at least for me. Because they do torpor and damage, but torpor is always regenerating but health doesn't regenerate. So usually they just die on me before they pass out.

You actually need a lot of tranq arrows to down most of the bigger dinos. Especially at higher levels. Maybe you know this already but yeah. Lots.
It's actually a really good idea to get a berry-gathering dino like a stego as soon as you can. Again I just wait for one to get stuck in a tree.
They are also pretty hard to tame but SO MANY BERRIES once you do. Like, put a saddle onto a stego, waddle into a fern patch, tail swipe a few times and you will have more berries than you ever dreamed possible.
It's so much easier to make all those narcotics at that point.

You know, there might be some mods you'd like if you mostly just like building and decorating with dinosaurs. There was some pretty good stuff last time I checked. I really like eco's decor mods.
Last time I tried to get back into ark I saw a couple that sounded nice that made carnivores only hostile when they were hungry and added "wild nests" to the world with fertile dino eggs to steal.

@Ankokou
:0 oh geez. well. good thing i didn't punch a trike yet lol so do you still recommend using tranq arrows as a means of knocking things out? and just kite?
yo and thank you for the stego tip, i'll definitely have to get one bc lack of narcoberries is probably one of the biggest nuisances, i never have enough narcotics. i've been trying to gather a lot of berries by hand lol

!! i think i want to try to install some mods, but i will admit i don't really know how to do it. maybe i should google it :0 i read an article about some mods that sounded cool, like npc humans and even 'play as a dinosaur' :0 you should try to play again too lol it might be worth it

Yeah, just keep hitting it with arrows. There is a method where you wait a certain number of seconds between arrows since the torpor keeps building for a bit after a hit but I don't remember very well. I know some dinos take a looot of arrows. Like, 100. Or more.
But yeah, berry dinos help A LOT with the amount of nacro berries you will need. It really opens up a new tier of the game when you get one.
Maybe even since the last time I played something lower level and easier to obtain than a stego has been added too. I have no idea but I heard talk about it at one point.

Also if you are having trouble kiting, which can be downright scary with some dinos, I really like the cheaty methods for single player where you either wait for them to get stuck or wait until you have a flier and sit on top of a big rock where they can't murder you. XD
About the biggest dino I've ever successfully tamed solo on the ground are carnotaurus. They are just small enough and slow enough that a low level one might pass out before it catches you or a high level, high health, pack of escort of dinos can just tank the damage set to passive for higher level ones while you fill it with arrows.

Actually I really like carnos. Of the dinos that were added last time I played they were my favorite to lead around the island. Small enough they didn't get stuck on terrain as much as the big guys but a small decent level pack of four or so could take on most threats. I'm guessing that strategy is less effective now though with all the new additions like wild allosaurus packs.

If you use the PC Steam version mods are super easy to use. You go into the workshop, find something that looks cool, read the description to make sure it's compatible with the current version and if it might have issues with any other mods you also want to use, and hit subscribe. In game you tell the mod to load and the stuff just appears in game however it's supposed to work in the mod.

If you are console... yeah I don't even know if there are mods for console. Maybe? More and more these days console games allow modding.

I've got to agree on carnos. There was this one time all my dinos got killed except for a carno, terror bird, carbonemys, and some compies, and I had decided to leave the coast and travel to the other side of the island before the guy who did it could finish me off.

I was going to build a stone raft to get there, but that requires a lot of resources. I ended up taking my level 100 carno everywhere, because he could carry all my stuff, kill anything that bothered me or avoid it if he couldn't, and travel quickly around the coast with good visibility and without getting stuck on rocks. They're fairly easy to tame and the only negative is that stamina takes a while to regenerate. Only mounts I like better are the terror bird and frog.

Also, I really like the way they look. It's the most scientifically accurate model in the game, with the only inaccuracies relating to proportions, but even then it's just a really good looking model. The devs have definitely made some strange design choices in the past, like turning the rex into a hilariously top heavy blob of plastic, or adding leaves onto the raptors, but they actually did a really good job with skin textures and body shape on the carno.

@yungmoose I know mentally how the name is said but, my mouth just doesn't want to say it.

Wow, you didn't have berries for the therizinosaurus? I always think players have berries all the time *shrugs*

I wouldn't try knocking out anything with a club unless it's a person. Since you are doing mostly primitive then use Tranq Arrows with a Crossbow (35 damage 70 torpor) or Compound Bow (27 damage 54 torpor). Unless you can make Darts with a Longneck Rifle (26 damage 156 torpor). I usually wait 16-18 seconds between each hit.

A tamers best friend is the Dododex Taming Calculator (there is an app too). It has everything you need to know on taming dinos. Try it out :3

What body part were you shooting at on the Trike?

If you are on PC then get The Structures Plus mod for your singleplayer. It is a life saver for building!! Trust me you will love it.

@Ankokou I personally hate Gigas. The hate mostly comes from this one guy on my first official server that wiped me and my bf base. He was challenging some German tribe to see if they can break into his summer home (which was in front of the island of our base) before he can kill them all. My bf wanted to watch and the Germans were really nice to him. To bad the other guy wasn't. He saw him, demand that we give up our perfect bred Rex for him to kill or he would wipe us. Turned out the crazy guy was the Alpha (which we never knew since he was NEVER on) *sigh* He didn't listen to reason because he was 'Alpha'. Soooooooooo, he brought his stupid Gigas and wiped our base. He then demand we become his slaves in order to stay on the server. NOPE!! Goodbye jerk.

I still love playing Ark even with that bad taste in my mouth. I know to many pains from just playing DX

@Ankokou
oh snap thas a lot of arrows. hmm... yeah berry dino is gonna be a must. once i get like 20 tranq arrows they're like burning a hole in my inventory lmao like time to TAME somethin!! lol
i found this list that was created recently: http://orcz.com/ARK_Survival_Evolved:_Dino_Specialties_and_Efficiencies

it suggests that parasaurs are good berry-collectors, but from my experience they're not that great. looks like i should try to trap a stego or trike. i watched a youtube video about a guy trapping the therizinosaur in some columns... maybe i should create like a trapping arena with rocks and walls or something lol i was actually wondering, does it work to build a tower and shoot from above? that seems so broken if it works ha

carnotaurus are little bullies lol i always see them running around trying to eat everybody. i've seen them get rekt by birdrex, brontosaurus, and trikes. and they are very scary to me ha but i will consider going after one maybe someday, they seem useful and like you said, a good size. :P maybe when i'm playing with others i'll try it.

and i do use steam on pc to play ark! :)) i was browsing through some of the mods on there but i only saw the green 'subscribe' button, but hayhay, i guess that's the only button i need lol. i'll give it a whirl next time i decide to play.

@icenice
yo so you know what i think happened, i think i took down the therizinobirdrex then i looked up how to tame it and somehow got mixed up because i used to think that it ate eggs or something so i was like "welp dont have any eggs, goodnight" heh.. got hella hide i guess tho. silly me, the more you know :P

i have looked at dododex calculator sometimes, but it's a weeee bit confusing. i can get enough out of it to be able to tell what i can tame each dino with which is useful tho. there are just a lot of numbers everywhere.

but i honestly have been waiting for the dart engram!! i think i need like 4 more levels on that single player game. until then, a crossbow it is. and i start off shooting the trike in the side but then of course as it starts to run after me i start aiming for the head. perhaps the head is a bad choice?

i will definitely be researching some mods soon, it sounds like a great idea :3 just what i want. sometimes i do get lonely tho, so i'd really like to join a server too. decisions.

also screw that douchey guy :/ can't game online without running into douchejerks like that unfortunately D:< but i'm too in love with this beautiful, open-world, sandbox, survival dinoSAUR GAME!!!

also thank you guys so much for replying to me and for giving me tips and suggestions!! y'all are amazing and i am so appreciative <3 !!

carnotaurus are little bullies lol i always see them running around trying to eat everybody. i've seen them get rekt by birdrex, brontosaurus, and trikes. and they are very scary to me ha but i will consider going after one maybe someday, they seem useful and like you said, a good size.

@icenice
yo so you know what i think happened, i think i took down the therizinobirdrex then i looked up how to tame it and somehow got mixed up because i used to think that it ate eggs or something so i was like "welp dont have any eggs, goodnight" heh.. got hella hide i guess tho. silly me, the more you know :P

i have looked at dododex calculator sometimes, but it's a weeee bit confusing. i can get enough out of it to be able to tell what i can tame each dino with which is useful tho. there are just a lot of numbers everywhere.

but i honestly have been waiting for the dart engram!! i think i need like 4 more levels on that single player game. until then, a crossbow it is. and i start off shooting the trike in the side but then of course as it starts to run after me i start aiming for the head. perhaps the head is a bad choice?

i will definitely be researching some mods soon, it sounds like a great idea :3 just what i want. sometimes i do get lonely tho, so i'd really like to join a server too. decisions.

also screw that douchey guy :/ can't game online without running into douchejerks like that unfortunately D:< but i'm too in love with this beautiful, open-world, sandbox, survival dinoSAUR GAME!!!

also thank you guys so much for replying to me and for giving me tips and suggestions!! y'all are amazing and i am so appreciative <3 !!
