As someone who is always looking for amazing video games, I wanted to know everyone's favorite underrated game. Maybe the game got not-so-great ratings but you love it. Or maybe it was never advertised well and no one's heard of it. Or maybe the series is well known, but this particular game was the least popular of it.
Share BOTH pros and cons of the game and why you like it so much!
Mine has to be:
Pros:
1. Fully customizable player character and party members (yup! you create your own party members too!)
2. All equipment (except a few accessories) is fully viewable on the character models making it hilarious if you mix/match some really unmatching armor lol
3. Great storyline and memorable characters.
4. TONS of side-things to do. Side quests, alchemy (creating your own items and equipment), collect-a-thons and of course, your basic RPG level grinding.
5. Tons of ways to customize a character in not only their class, but in their proficiencies (class skills, sword skills, bow skills, shield skills, etc etc) so not two characters are ever the same, even if they're the same class. There are 10 classes and like triple the amount of proficiencies to level in.
6. Extensive post-game with treasure maps and grottos, unlocking more powerful enemies and items to collect. Treasure maps are RNG spawned, so no two are ever the same!
7. Can play with up to three friends through the entire main storyline, at any time.
Cons:
1. The dialogue can be kind of cringey, as a good portion of the NPCs talk in this weird Olde English/Scottish hybrid. Thankfully there's no voice acting.
2. DLC is unavailable now as the Nintendo DS Wifi support is gone, so the game cannot be 100% completed in some aspects (can't get all the armor pieces or quests from the DLC, can't unlock the ability to add some main NPCs to your party). But it does not make the game unplayable unless you're a person who is a completionist.
3. Some quests literally give you NO clues on how to solve. (What? I need to wear an outfit that exactly matches this NPC's flavor, and it can be slightly randomized?) so for some you may need a quest guide.
4. Some cutscenes can be a bit long.
Conclusion:
All in all, Dragon Quest 9 is one of my favorite RPG games of all time. I hope some time they bring it to the Switch store, so we can have the DLC again, but the game is fine on its own without it. My favorite games are always the ones where you have nearly unlimited options to customize your character, and being the fact that you can create and manage even your own party is something that isn't done commonly in games. Plus if you like the traditional JRPG games of say, Golden Sun or the handheld Final Fantasy games, you'll like this!
(Also Golden Sun is a great game toooooo)
