It's a bit like daydreaming, but orders of magnitude more intense. You can fly, explore the oceans, whatever you imagine. Unlike daydreaming, the intensity of sensation will be near that of real life. Once you've recorded enough dreams to get a feel for any recurring themes, start doing "reality checks". This is more for handling incidental nightmares. Be aware that high dream recall can be upsetting at first, since you'll be remembering more nightmares, but that in time it will help you control them. Consider how you want to approach things. You can passively try to reduce your nightmares by meditating before bedtime, improving sleep hygiene, and identifying trends. You can actively tackle them with lucid dreaming and general dream manipulation. The Previous Thread
It's long dead, but it also reached 200 pages by the end. Lots of dreams on those dusty old pages!

Suspiciously Good Wikihow: Lucid Dreaming
I know the site's kind of a meme, but this is a great overview. They have a ton of techniques listed (pretty much all those worth talking about imo), so pick one to start with and work your way through! Personally I've had great results by waking up at around 3am, writing down a bit of a dream, then trying to return to it, but everyone's a little different.

Beginner-Friendly Guided Meditation and Lucid Dreaming Meditation
If you're new to meditation (or bad at it, like I am), that first link is GREAT. A proper guided meditation is much easier than dropping in all at once! That second link is a bit more suspect, but it's the least-suspect of the links on the subject that I found. Essentially, it's how to start applying your developing meditative skills to lucid dreaming.

Chatting with your Dreaming Mind
One of my two go-two techniques, I haven't found much about it in the literature. Basically, willpower is a huge part of recall and lucidity, and this is one method for boosting it, involving what's essentially a structured conversation with yourself.

Proper Sleep Hygiene
Sleep Hygiene is a "your mileage may vary" kind of thing. Some of these tips may seem painfully obvious, some may be things you straight-up can't do (ex: my apartment will never be quiet). Still, it's worth looking through to see if there's anything you can do to make the transition to sleep easier on yourself.

The Short Guide to Dream Interpretation and Identifying Dream Trends
Couldn't find an up-to-date, still-existing guide that didn't wander into ??? territory, so I'm doing a short writeup myself. So, every person has a rich internal language, a network of associations that draw from our personal experience. Some folks find zombies fun and exciting, some find them terrifying, etc. This makes generalized dream interpretation pretty difficult! But by identifying trends, we can sort pick up on these languages. This in turn allows us to make guesses about dreams, if only for fun.

Maybe you often dream of the mountains, but don't live near them in real life--that means that associating reality checks with mountains might be a good idea. The dreams about mountains are normally peaceful and feature loved ones who have moved on. Do mountains have some sort of meaning to you? It's a fun thought exercise, and yes, thinking about dreams increases recall even further!

Hello, dreamers!
How long I've been at this: about six years, on and off

My goal(s): nothing specific right now, though returning to a point of solid dream recall would be great (I haven't done it in a while so I'm a bit rusty!)

Things that show up a lot in my dreams: snakes, wolves, standing stones, coniferous forests, a specific (weirdly consistent) alien ocean full of weird sea monsters, futuristic sci-fi settings (particularly settlements on Mars)

A little bit about me: I'm a very nearly 21-year-old blob of indeterminate gender who likes animals, dinosaurs, mythical creatures, video games, memes and... let's face it, a lot of other things too. I'm a very lazy witch and dabble in some spiritual stuff, but I don't really consider myself to be a ~spiritual person~. My hobbies include drawing while listening to angery music, spending too long in the coli listening to podcasts, giving my dog infinite belly rubs, talking to myself, and complaining about pop culture's horrendous misrepresentation of prehistoric animals. :D

The room itself didn't seem to be consistent in its location or where things like doors, windows and furniture were situated. In the room, there was normal living room furniture - a couple settees, a TV on a wooden stand, some storage cupboards built into the walls. It was a large room, clearly part of a much larger house than any I've lived in before, but besides that it was pretty mundane. In the room, near the TV, was a single vivarium. It was about 80cm wide, with the front, sides and top being glass, and the back and bottom wood. Inside were some kinda poor-quality decorations and substrate, much cheaper and nastier than anything I'd buy, but looking at it I felt a kind of resigned satisfaction in that - even if I didn't like the look of it - it was perfectly suitable for my little friend who lived inside. That friend being Nyoka, a ball python who (in real life) I had owned for about three years before I ended up rehoming him due to money issues and my deteriorating mental health. He was lounging on a cardboard ledge attached to the back wall of the vivarium, looking healthy and content, his little tongue flicking. There was a bit of a time skip, and I went back to check on him and noticed something strange. There was what looked like a very small, green-and-black striped snake also inside his vivarium. I couldn't leave it in there in case Nyoka tried to eat it, or it injured him in self-defence. I didn't recognise the species, so wasn't sure whether or not in was venomous; when I reached my hand in to pick it up, I made sure to grab it right behind its head so it couldn't bite me. I gently picked up the little guy, unsure of what to do with it. But as I removed it, I noticed there was another, similar snake curled up near where that one had been, partially hidden by aspen shavings. I scooped that one up too, and noticed there was - yep - another one, previously hidden by the one I'd just picked up. Thankfully no more appeared after I removed that one. So now I just had these three mystery snakes that had somehow appeared in Nyoka's fully-enclosed vivarium. I decided not to think too much about that, and just deal with the problem at hand: what do I do with these snakes? At some point during this time, two more vivariums appeared in the room. I'm not sure what was in them, but they never became particularly relevant to the dream besides me having to move one out of the way (a relatively tall one that looked like a modified bookcase, made of wood with a single glass pane front, lit by a green light that didn't do much to illuminate whatever was inside). I turned back to glance at Nyoka's vivarium again to find - lo and behold - there were more random snakes in there. This time, I could see some other ball python in there with Nyoka, which I wouldn't be too worried about except that there was barely enough room for them. I reached in and picked that one up, then (surprise surprise) noticed another extra python in there and picked that one up too. I was still holding the little green-and-black snakes in my left hand, and now hand two fully grown ball pythons haphazardly held in the other. They were, of course, slithering around trying to explore or escape, but somehow I managed to keep hold of them. There was a bit of a "glitch" in the dream and for a moment Nyoka's vivarium was replaced by a very similar viv with an adult corn snake inside, and a weird, brightly coloured snake (orange and a kind of purplish white) that I somehow knew was robotic, and that would certainly try to eat the real snake. Before I could react to that, the dream changed back - and there was Nyoka's vivarium, with some more interlopers inside! The green-and-black snakes had disappeared from my left hand, so I reached in and picked up what I at first thought was a very large snake, but I soon realised was a chunky greyish-brown lizard (it looked like a spiny-tailed agama, I think?). After removing that one, I found a few more snakes and another smaller lizard somehow hidden underneath it, and picked those up too. At this point I was practically juggling all these reptiles and starting to feel a bit stressed - what do I do with all these animals? How was I so stupid to let all these animals live in the same small vivarium? I should've paid more attention to Nyoka! I should have prepared for this! I did something wrong, I messed up, and now all these innocent animals are paying for it! Usually at this point in the dream I'd wake up, but this time I didn't. There was a time-skip again, and I knew that somebody was calling a local exotic pet shop and asking if they had room for all these snakes and lizards. They had said yes, but we'd have to pay for the inconvenience. I agreed without even thinking. I just felt so relieved that there was someone who could properly care for all these reptiles, and could find them new homes. At some point around this time, another door had appeared in the room, right beside Nyoka's vivarium, and some stranger was living in there with her two young children. One of the lizards had escaped and I knew it had ended up in there, so I knocked on the door, explained the situation, and went in to look around. It was a messy room, with a couple of mattresses on the floor for the family to sleep on and (weirdly enough?) a lit fireplace on one wall which took up a huge amount of the little space they had. I picked up what I thought was the lizard, only to find it was actually a semi-realistic baby doll with dark skin. This happened a few times, with the dolls seeming to increase in size each time and their skin colour always being different. Eventually I found the little lizard, safe and unharmed, picked it up, and left the room. - - - - - Then the dream completely changed, becoming surreal and chaotic. There was a lush, beautiful zoo that looked mostly empty, but I knew it wasn’t. One enclosure had a pond in which I could see something large swimming just below the surface. One had two gigantic, fluffy kangaroos, one of which as an auburn colour, the other cream. One exhibit, weirdly, contained a few animatronic Transformers (a series I’ve never even watched), stood in an area of swamp, which acted like fully sapient, mobile beings… but I knew they were fake animatronics and moved on as they bickered in the background. Then there was a scene where I was watching a cartoon about a group of were-lions, except at the end of the cartoon it turned out that the father was not actually a were-lion but had gained the ability to turn into a giant wolf in a bargain with some evil, Lovecraftian monstrosity that then burst out of a small lake. While most of the cartoon was animated in a 2-D, stylised way, the, uh, “Old God” thing appeared hyperrealistic, consisting of a mass of flailing purplish-black tentacles emerging from the water. Then there was a scene (it felt like I was watching a live-action movie) where three people were swimming through an ocean, kind of near a shoreline, when suddenly Jurassic World’s horrifically oversized mosasaur appeared and tried to eat them (in the dream I scoffed a bit because they weren’t anywhere near that big in real life), then it was attacked by an equally oversized megalodon. The people escaped by riding giant, peaceful, aquatic centipedes that swam gracefully to the shore. Then there was a scene where I was walking with my family, following my step-dad across this massive footbridge that arced over a huge public park. The bridge was crammed full of people and sometimes branched off into different bridges going in different directions. We took one of the turn-offs and ended up in a small campground. There I met a pair of really cute rottweiler puppies and played with them for a while. And there was a part of the dream where I was friends with someone who owned a horse riding centre, and they said they'd let me board a horse there if I built my own stable. So I did that. And I was gonna buy a cute lil colt but then the dream changed. (I've never owned a horse before but it's a lifelong dream of mine, haha). Notes: the snake part of the dream was particularly interesting, because in my dreams snakes (and sometimes other reptiles) represent responsibility. I’ve had similar dreams for years, and usually I wake up from the stress of not knowing what to do with all the randomly appearing snakes. This is the first time I ever managed to keep a clear head in the dream and deal with the problem. Which I think indicates that I’m feeling more confident at dealing with my real life responsibilities than I used to. :D Wow, this post ended up a bit longer than I intended. I guess I remembered more than I realised!

Trigger warnings: snakes, animal neglect

I was in a room in a house I didn't recognise.
