Most people around my age: listens to modern music and the likes of xxxtentacion and kpop

Me: sits quietly in corner while blasting bohemian rhapsody

Am I the only one who dislikes most modern music? I still listen to the old classics from time to time, despite my 'millennial' age.

Edit: the second post has my reply with further elaboration, so yeah go check it out.

I personally get turned off of music that is 'popular' simply because you hear it. EVERYWHERE. Constantly. In shops, on the radio, on the telly... you can't escape it when you work in an environment where they play music. :/

I don't want to say this is the case with 'modern' music because any songs that hit the charts, whether I like them or not, will get on my nerves because of over exposure. I get sensory overload with music a lot of the time, and anything I can consider remotely annoying (whiny voice, repetitive beat, etc) destroys my tolerance for a lot of pop/ dance songs.

I'd rather listen to a variety of background tunes/ ambience that doesn't overpower an environment, haha.

I agree, OP. I heard a Post Malone ad on Spotify which was just... the same monotonous tone saying words like how is this music? I'd admit that my taste of music is not everyone's favourite, because I listen to very loud, bass-boosted electronic rock, industrial rock, and synthwave, but a lot of modern music is very... overrated.

Ehhhhh. That depends on whether you're an actual millennial, or a teen.

'cos if you're a teen, to be honest you tend to get over that whole 'old music is so vastly superior to new music' when you grow out of your edgy 'not like the others' phase*.

It's the same as only being into metal (or 'alternative' generally) when everybody else around you is into hip hop, rap or pop. Sometimes people just like what's different to the norm and that's okay, but sometimes when you look back it smacks of embarrassing immaturity if the reason you did this and rejected modern/popular stuff is purely to be different**.

Depending on your age, you still have plenty of time to get over that nonsense and develop a more eclectic and wide-ranging taste in music. If you want to, of course. You don't have to, but every metalhead or classic-music-in-a-modern-era devotee in their younger years I've ever met sort of grew out of it when they hit about 25.

On the other hand, I do agree. While some new music has merit (ngl I like the odd song I hear, here and there), there's so much which is actual absolute crap. Most of which my sister is into. Someone up there mentioned Post Malone and oh my god what absolute rubbish but no, she loves that crud. I mostly just want to sheep dip the grubby lookin' dude.

The best thing to do is find what you like and avoid alllll the rubbish. If what you like at the moment is classic rock, then listen to classic rock. I wasted a lot of time being judgmental about music when I was younger, and now, so long as I don't have to hear it, I don't much care what the other music's like. |D

Most of the crap I listen to now is either old music I liked in my teens (which, given that I was in my late teens when Nu Metal was at its height... hahaha), stuff from soundtracks or fansongs.

If you wanna listen to Queen for the rest of your days, well, you do you! While you're there, please take Radio Ga Ga away from me, because it keeps attacking me from the soundtrack I'm listening to and it's getting a little wearing. 8|

*No insults here -- I was this person and so was my colleague -- we find it funny now as a topic of conversation. Only metal from when I was 13 to 15, added "vastly superior" (it's not) 80's music to the metal when I was 16 to 19. I was so cool playing Mötley Crüe in the common room in sixth form, donchaknow.

Why only mention the absolute crap of the modern music crop when we can talk about good modern musicians like Snail's House and Porter Robinson. Or Two Steps from Hell! But yeah there's a lot of good and bad modern music, you just need to find something that fits your tastes.
Or listen to Kirby music, which you can never go wrong with.

I've read some interesting stuff about modern music recently, actually! Turns out it's scientifically proven that modern music is becoming more and more less original and also simpler and more repetetive, with less and less variation within songs, both when it comes to the melody and the lyrics of the song (I mean, we all know at least one song that has one line that gets repeated endlessly ...). Many pop songs use similar or downright the same components, one of them being called the "millenial whoop", which is a certain combination of notes, it's basically a "Wa-oh-wa-oh".

Another thing is compression - it's used to make music files smaller so you can store more of it on your PC or iPod or whatever, but the quality of the song actually suffers from it. Usually, when you play a song live and record it, there's instruments that will be more in the background and ones that will be louder and more in the foreground, so to say, so songs have a certain deptht to them. But that depth gets lost once you compress is, so a lot of modern songs end up sounding kinda flat. So maybe you have a point!

Of course that doesn't mean that it's a bad thing to listen to modern music (or simple music in gerneral). Our brains love repetition after all, which is why some songs are so gosh-darn catchy. I myself have quite a number of favourite songs that are rather repetetive and one-dimensional, but oh well. Music is supposed to be fun after all.

Personally, I listen to a wide variety of music. I actually dislike most modern pop songs, though, not because I'm in camp "all modern music sucks and I'm a special and unique because I think so" (by the way, I don't mean to attack anyone, but there's actually people out there who think like this and I unfortunately know a few in person :') ), but simply because it's not my taste. Also kind of annoyed at the plethora of generic love songs. And if it's not a love song, it's one about partying :| (There's nothing wrong with those kinds of songs of course, I'm just kinda annoyed by HOW MANY there are and how hard it can be sometimes to find songs that aren't about these two topics.)

But Homuncullus is right! For all the modern "crap" that's out there, there's also a lot of good stuff! You just need to find it :D
