Emoticons every time. They’re so much more flexible (and cuter).

if i want a cursed emote i can just use "uwu", no need for emojis
emoticons... I hate how Discord ‘corrects’ emoticons to emojis. Let us have our emoticons man.

I never, ever use emojis. Despite having no color, emoticons feel more...expressive? You can also make your own! The uwu and owo varieties are fun to jokingly mess around with. And don’t forget the classical “lenny face” if you really want to cause chaos!
I prefer emoticons -- I disabled my discord auto-emoji just so i can use them hh

It depends on who I'm talking with. If it's older friends that are more internet savvy, I use emoticons as they have a higher chance of recognizing what they're supposed to be. If it's family, I use emojis, as they're more distinctive and I feel they'll have an easier time understanding what I'm trying to get across.
So, both. I'm more used to emoticons but Discord has some handy emojis.
