TOPIC | The National Dex fiasco: A conversation

So.

I've been a long time, and I say looooooooong time, fan of the Pokemon series, to where it inspired me to take the animation major just to enter the Game Programming major to become a game programmer. However, if you've been around for the last couple of months, you can tell that there's some... controversy going around- not just any kind of controversy, I'm talking the "Visible Mushroom Cloud From a 50 KM radius" kind. I'm talking about the lack of the national dex, and the reactions of the fans it garnered.

Don't get me wrong, I'm also disappointed in the lack of the dex and the Kanto pandering, but I also try to see it from the point of view of the employees at Game Freak working on the game while also taking into account of the initial reactions BW/BW2 had in comparison XY had (where its Kanto pandering gained them positive reviews and thus started this trend). So I guess I'm more-or-so neutral regarding this topic, so I don't have much to say about either side of BBND and DBBND. I still do hold hopes of DLC, because hey, it's always an option, and I can see GF utilizing this to, slowly, but certainly, patch in the rest of the Pokemon.

...HOWEVER,

What I do have to say about the topic is the amount of toxicity being poured out from the pores of both sides, like holy <GA: -Tactical Ommision>. I know of the intentions of either side, but calling one side "corporate no-life shills" and "fake fans" while referring to the other as "savages" and "a literal hivemind of hate"; it isn't going to solve anything!

Going around spamming Masuda-san's social media and accuse him of unspeakable acts won't bring change- at least not a positive one.
Going around spamming the NatDexers hate messages in the name of 'justice' won't do anything, either.

If you're going to act extreme, then you will taint the message of your argument and the image of those that stand with it. Period. looking at you, distantkingdom

So here's where the reason why I'm making this little forum comes in- I want to know the perspective of each Pokemon fan, whether they want the dex or not, with civility and respect. I will not be biased in any way, and I hope you guys won't be so, as well. If all you have to say is shallow insults to the opposing side or GF as a whole, please, this is not the forum for you. The reason why you joined, your POV, you can share it here.

My only rule here is this:
Don't send hate mail to other users, even if they disagree with your opinion. This forum will be here for the purpose of having civil conversations with either side, I state again. Toxicity is not to be welcomed in any way. We're talking about a kid's game, for crying out loud, so such type of behavior is not just unacceptable, but extremely embarrassing.

Thank you.

It might be a little hypocritical of me to say this given that Mightyena is my all-time favorite and I'm pretty sure it won't make it into the 'dex, but I'm not particularly concerned about having every single Pokemon in this game.

I fully understand others' frustration, but I think it makes sense in the sense that each Pokemon game is totally unique, and being able to catch or trade every single one kinda defeats that purpose. It encourages me to make new, unique teams each time. So even though that little part of me still REALLY wants a Mightyena on my team, I think I'll survive this time around ;)

Oof, same but with Celesteela in my case :'/ Actually scratch that- the UBs are my babies and if they ain't in Galar, I'm going to cry.

Edit: Interesting username, btw!

@Svecounia72

I never understood the purpose of actually completing the dex aside from extra challenge imo. But then again, there is the chance of some of my unpopular favorites, most notably Slurpuff, not making the cut, and I can see why most people would be disappointed abt it, too. You sound p mature with how you're taking it tbh, that I admire! Though things may look grim, you still have a bright view on how SwSh is going to turn out, and that is great!

And hey, it's alright, yo- though our hyena-dog-pupper-boi may not be in Galar, there's always hope of a patch, or at least them being available in the next gen.

tbh i'm more upset about the kanto pandering than the dex being gone. i'm glad it gives new players more of a chance to finish the dex because the entire galardex will be obtainable in game.

Yup. If there's one thing I kind of hold 'against' The Pokemon Company, it's not letting the other gens taking turns on the spotlight. While I do understand it's due to marketability and the reactions garnered from Gens 5 and 6 (especially the former), over time it's going to get stale and flavorless- nobody will want to play Pokemon anymore because, if TPC goes further down this Scorbunny hole, it'll trap itself in a state of monotony and will lose what made Pokemon truly shine.

But hey, at least I won't have to acquire 5 or so consoles to transfer most of the 'mons to the newer ones to complete the dex, which is a major relief.

My issue with the Dex removal lies in paying $60 for a game with removed content, and in Pokémon Home not doing everything it was originally advertised to. Unless SwSh has something mindblowing that hasn’t been shown off yet, it seems like I could get more content with a $40 3DS game and a subscription to Pokémon Bank. Charging more for less content sets a worrying standard, one I feel Gamefreak could follow again in the future. With that said, I also feel like there’s some possibility they’ll just make Mega Ultra Deluxe Sword/Shield in a year or two with the whole Dex anyway, so why spend the money now? I figure I’ll at least wait until the next games get announced before deciding for sure whether or not to buy and if the next games are just a sequel/remake, I’ll save my money till then. I’m in the camp that feels like USUM could have been DLC for the amount of new story/content it added compared to previous sequels/third versions and did not buy it. Announcing USUM within two months of SM’s release and having it be the “better” version without adding anything too groundbreaking has definitely impacted my decision on whether to buy future games shortly after release.

Also my boi Archeops is almost definitely not making it in so, there’s that D:

@Icaruz

This is why it's best to take some time before doing anything major, like, as you said, paying a whopping 60 bucks over a single cartridge. It's better to wait until some DLC is announced or for a third installment/sequel/'ultra versions' of the games before deciding whether to buy it or not. I am not entirely sure if Home is going to be needing a subscription fee or not, so correct me if I'm wrong, but if it it doesn't then that's going to be a major relief and may 'save' Gen 8's reputation.

And yeah; though USUM has its gems (like Hau being the first challenger? Ultra Recon Squad? Team RR (and mah boi Sophocles getting the spotlight)? New UBs and Ultra Necrozma? Yes, please!), it would have worked a lot better as an expansion pack more than anything, maybe it could have been reworked to become something that made post-game more interesting, but ah well, can't mourn over the past now.

If Galar doesn't have any kind of fossilmon, I am going to riot.

i will admit i was disappointed when i heard about the lack of national dex, and i am still a little disappointed about it, but not the point that i've seen people spamming about it online. totally understand people being upset but i think nintendo is well aware that people aren't happy about the decision and i don't think it'll be a reoccurring thing with future games. :/ at least not ones within the same console so therefore, the same models. so i absolutely agree, no need to spam these poor people or get angry about it.

from what i understand the lack of national dex is partly due to needing to make new models for every pokemon? with every generation adding ~100 pokemon, this had to be a problem eventually... i would much rather have a game on the switch this year vs a super delayed release while they make it possible for every pokemon to be in the game.

if my favs don't end up being in the game, oh well! it'll force me to use different pokemon, and from what's been released of the new generation i think i'll like most of the new pokes in general!

That is the issue with game development that, unfortunately, most fans tend to overlook- we're not just talking about models and animation when it comes to game development; we're talking textures, model physics, cartridge space, animations outside of battles, branching dialogues, etcetera etcetera. If certain people are going to call Game Freak 'lazy' and those that defend them 'shills' or 'apologists' again, I'm staring at you, DistantKingdom, then they have to know that game development is a hell of a lot harder than, let's say, making a pre-downloaded MMD model dance to po-pi-po- and let's not get to the sheer time alone trying to program all that by hand from scratch. Besides, as you said, the fault doesn't fall on GF or any of its employees, as they expressed regret over it, dozens of times. Somewhat unrelated, but during one of the interviews, Masuda expressed stress from this whole thing, and I'm honestly worried sick about him ever since...

I say that though the cut was inevitable from the start, as some JRPGs tend to cut a lot of their old monsters when they make a new installment, it's also due to the trend of GF not utilizing the console's full potential when they first dive into it, which I totally understand. Contrast XY with SM, and you will see the difference. They're testing new waters before setting sail. I am holding high hopes that this fiasco will not persist until the next generation on the switch (or the games' third installment).
