Ok so I’m decently good at drawing on paper and I want to go digital. So I’m asking all you absolutely AMAZING artists what programs do you use to make art? also any tips or tricks you newbies?

Honestly I'm not that good, but I use FireAlpaca for my drawings. A very good alternative if you don't wanna pay for Paint Tool Sai

Photoshop for me. This is a very basic tip but I didn't use it for yonks: if you're using a tablet, make sure the pressure sensitivity is actually on, otherwise all your lines will be the same thickness and it looks bad.

Also layers are important and very useful.

Medibang is the best one imo
It doesn't hurt your eyes with the white layout like Firealpaca

I use FireAlpaca. It's a decent free software!

If you're going to be working with a graphics tablet, it's going to take some time to adjust and get used to the hand/eye coordination required to use it, the disconnect from not looking at your hand as you draw is very weird and takes some time and practise to get used to. My advice for this is to keep using your tablet for general computer and browsing use in place of your mouse to help you adjust to it.

I use GIMP because it's free and I don't have money and it fits my needs. I haven't made a full step into digital, instead my art is technically mixed media.

I do all the sketching and lines on paper, finish the line art with ink, erase all pencil marks, scan the paper, import the file into GIMP, max out the saturation, and set white to transparent, leaving only the lines behind. From there, I color things in chunks using the free select tool to mark the area, then fill it with the paint bucket. I do the same for shading, but fill in with black and then lower the opacity of that layer.

It's a pretty simple process, but works for me since my art is flat and stylized. I used to have a tablet, but never got used to it, and so this is all done with a mouse and keyboard.

Ibis is pretty good to start on, and it’s free. It’s how I started actually getting good with digital art. Now I use procreate but it’s a bit of any investment and you don’t know if digital art is for you yet. I’d suggest trying free software before buying anything

I use Paint Tool Sai, it's like one of the best ones I ever used. You can even draw with a mouse in it with the linework layer, no need for a pen tablet. I use Gimp (for transparent backgrounds, as my Sai doesn't support transparency) and Photoshop Elements for touch ups and editing the images.

I used Krita once before, it's a free program, no need to buy it like Sai. I don't know what it's like now, but last time I remember, it had very nice brushes but was very laggy on my PC. Maybe computers with better specs will be able to run Krita.

I use procreate on an old iPad, it cost $6 but well worth it. Though if you want to start on the computer for free Medibang is great!
