So, here’s the thing, I know nothing of D&D but I love it. Some old friends of mine made up their own games and would invite me. They had their own dice system and it was on discord. So, I don’t actually know about the actual game at all or house it’s supposed to work. Basically, I’ve played a very simplified version I guess? There was a DM and everything, made our own characters, but it definitely wasn’t advanced.

I was more wondering if anyone here is into D&D and could maybe tell me more about their experience with it? Did you play it seriously? Was it advanced, or was it a simplified version like mine?

Overall, I really enjoyed the simplified D&D but unfortunately the friendship between me and them ended pretty early because of drama.

@MeanieKitty I used to play D&D (5th edition) with my uncle and his buddies but we're on a bit of a hiatus right now. I also used to DM for a group at my school, but when I switched schools, I had to pass off leadership to someone else. To answer your question, we played the regular version, which I assume is what you're calling the "advanced" version. We didn't simplify it. My first character was a Half-Dragon Wizard/Fighter named Uhana who was a pirate before becoming an adventurer. Then our first party all got killed except Uhana because I ran away like the black-hearted pirate I was haha. So she's still running around out there somewhere. My current character is a Tiefling Bard named Grandmaster Funk and this is what he looks like: [s]Yes I made his eyes black because I created him soon after I discovered Gorillaz. I'm just rolling with it now[/s] ANYWAY my general experience with D&D is just getting to act like a kid again with imaginary games and scenarios... except slightly more structured. I REALLY want to get playing again but the group at my current school meets at the DM's house instead of the school and that kinda makes me nervous. There's no real reason it should make me nervous, my best friend attends those meetings, but alas. Maybe I'll join/create a group in college next year... It's an amazing game that can become whatever the hell you want. It can create new friendships and bring family members together. I'd say once you're hooked, there's no going back. Um... I really didn't answer any of your questions did I? lol sorry I'm open to messages if you want, or we can discuss things on this thread

Oh, don’t worry about answering my questions. It’s just nice hearing your experience and how much you’ve enjoyed it! I called it advanced because I had a friend who played it in a way where they needed a mini book just to keep track of their character. Keeping track of their inventories, spells, followers, everyone they met, quests, skill tree, health and stamina, and just so much more. There was just so much going on, so many numbers because of weapons and buffs... it all confused me! There was even a weight system like in Skyrim so they couldn’t just carry tons of heavy stuff. Although, my friend bypassed this by making everything he puts in his bag light as a feather. Believe he tricked a god/mage into upgrading his backpack into a magical one.

i'm running a d&d 5e campaign off of this pdf, and our second session was supposed to be today but due to conflicting schedules we had to cancel. we've been having a lot of fun with it so far though, if it counts.

so far, i haven't actually played d&d as a player. i'm turning into the designated dm friend, i think. our 5e campaign is going pretty standard (with the addition of the pathfinder madness system). i'm also planning a pathfinder campaign (with a few 5e additions because there are some mechanics from it that i like).

if character sheets and the like are what confused you the most, dndbeyond is helpful for keeping track of spells, but for pathfinder, pcgen works really well for keeping track of ranks (but it does require some background knowledge of feats and stuff)

i was really lucky to have a friend that helped me with char creation, and they explained the mechanics really well. i'm turning into the go-to pathfinder friend lmao.

i hope this helped at all!

My group follows 5e rules, but our DM is used to 3.5, so sometimes those get mixed in- spell casting can get advanced - ish, because spell casting is a lot of memorization and notes so you dont accidentally poison spray your whole party including the rogue with 9 hp (true story, I am the rogue, and yes, the druid has nearly poisoned me about 4 times). But otherwise its about medium? theres a lot of depth to the rules, but its not TOO rulesy when youre playing? if that makes sense.

I will say though, watching others play is a great way to pick up rules- I watch Critical Role a lot, and as a result, have become the "Assistant Dm" of the group- because I've picked up on a lot of 5e rules just by watching others play 5e. I have also DM-ed exactly once, and apparently my return to the dm seat is something they're all looking forward to- even if 5e confuses our usual dm XD

I will say that other source material could also complicate it though- for example, in the game I ran, I allowed exotic races and classes- and ended up with a goblin gunslinger (her name is Jaazburt and she has a pet rat). In our other friends game, we all play kenku siblings- these things are fun, but if you're worried about it being overwhelming, just limit character creation to the players hand book :)
