TOPIC | tiny rant about school and sleep
1 2 3
so it's currently 3:30 in the morning. I fell asleep at about 9:45, and now I have to get up at 6.

I hate the way school works. My teachers always act like I can spend four hours on a project, when I have a personal life too. It's not even just that I don't want to stay up until midnight working on your stupid [insert project name here], I CAN'T. I need to sleep. I am not just a robot, I am a HUMAN. Younger kids who listen to their parents and go to sleep early have to get up later than the teenagers who are obviously going to stay up a little later. Most of the people I talk to at school say that they fall asleep normally from midnight to 3:00, and some of them wake up earlier than 6. So what was school thinking when they decided this? "Ooo, let's make the teens go to school early, so that they need to get up early! 4 hours of sleep will make sure that their brains work the best that they can!" The teenage brain needs at least 9 hours of sleep (google says ten, but I'm going with nine).

and maybe I have no idea what I'm talking about and four hours of sleep is enough. Maybe it's just our faults and we should all go to sleep earlier. (also, I'm aware that 9:45 to 3:30 is more than four hours) Or maybe there is a reason that teachers expect us to do four hours of a project until late. Maybe there is a reason that I need to learn how to do how to figure out an angle, because there's NO WAY a protractor would be sufficient. but all the reasons my teachers give me aren't good enough, so I had to rant about it a little bit.

idk,

thanks for coming to my ted talk I guess,

I usually get like 5 hours of sleep ahaha
but I think the school board should consider switching our schedule with the elementary

its a fact that teens produce less sleep chemicals so we sleep later

I get 3-5 hours of sleep a night, I'm in my most import stage of development and this is horrible for me, I spend most of my time on gaming and normally get tired around 2:00 am. my bus gets to my house around 7:30 am and stay till 4:00 pm takes me about an hour to get home and at 8:00-9:00 pm I eat dinner giving me 3 hours of personal time witch my school expects me to give up like 2 of those hours for studying and doing homework. AND 30 minutes of the 1 hour for my instrument.

SO I just give up on all that and game because, no I'm not doing that, I want to have time with my friends. (OH and all so take away 10 minutes for chores from the 30 minutes I would have left. so 20 minutes)

All so I have severe dyslexia making it super hard for me to keep track of my stuff and my school expects, no REQUIRES you to have a small bus tag and if you lose it you have to pay them 3 dollars for a small piece of plastic every single time you lose it.

"OH, YOUR SICK?!? HOW DARE YOU BE SICK AND MISS SCHOOL?!?"
In my school, we have to go to the doctor and get a note. Even after you get one you have a 70% chance (from what I have heard and seen) of them not caring you went to the doctor. And what they say is "we don't want kids skipping school and faking being sick." WELL DONT YOU THINK THER IS A PROBLEM IS THERE ITS SO BAD THERE PARENTS ARE LETTING THEM STAY HOME ALOT?!?!?

Oh and the way they treat the art class is disgusting, they get (both teachers with classes of 20-30 kids each, think about how much paint and clay and stuff they need.) $400 a year, the bad kids are dumped into art(there has been a fight in the middle of class, stuff has gone missing, and chairs in the trashcan), and are basically expected to pay out of there own pocket for more expensive stuff.

any more questions? Feel free to ask.

EDIT: all so doctor visits where I am are 300 dollars at the most.

I think teachers believe they're the only ones who give homework. I'm not a student anymore, but, if one teacher gave 2-3 hours of work, I would have been fine, but it was 6-7 teachers giving homework everyday.

"What are you going to do all day?" Was a common question, I even heard it in uni. In a couple of semesters I had 10-12 hours schedules. Yeah, I would have gladly worked on the project if I wasn't 8am to 8pm in uni. No way I would do any work afterwards. Uni was the only time in my life I slept like... 15 hours on the weekends out of sheer exhaustion.

Happiness can be found,
even in the darkest of times,
if one only remembers to turn on the light.

Apparently they think that school is supposed to BE your personal life, too. My school starts at 8pm sharp and I get up at 7am. It doesn't help that I get a buttload of homework and the teachers don't help me at all.

Now exams are next week and I'm just shutting down because the math teacher hates me and I have to write a an essay for english (I've never written an essay* in one sitting. I always break it up or else I make mistakes and it looks unrefined).

The way the average school system works has been damaging to young people for a LONG time. I'm struggling with what I think is chronic fatigue, and there's no way I could handle a regular school schedule right now without burning out quick. There's a reason so many people drop out, become depressed, or start performing worse than they did in elementary. I was an A+ student in elementary, now I've been struggling with school for the past couple years.

At the end of the day, most of what you learn in school will be useless as an adult. They teach you to remember things, not to survive adulthood. If you can get away with it, take care of yourself first.

school makes me so tired. I literally pass out around 15:00 to 17:00. Which means that when I wake up from that I wont be able to sleep at night very well so my sleep schedule is pretty much fricked

Having been through high school, college, and grad school, I can honestly tell you that for me at least graduate school and college BOTH allowed significantly better work life balance than high school did. It's a real problem the way high school is set up and has been for years (and its definitely affecting mental health in a huge way, among other things) but unfortunately nothing ever seems to change other than some states in the US starting to enforce later start times. But that doesnt help much when I very much remember being up til 11pm-1am doing homework every day of the week.

FWIW, I'd advise high schoolers to cut themselves a lot of slack - even a lot of stuff your teachers are telling you now is super important is often not that important. The biggest influences I still have from high school are from interesting big projects and interpersonal relationships and critical thinking classes, grades and busywork were a nonissue the moment I started college. Also the SAT is bunk and college credit classes are not what they're made out to be, lol.

Usually get around 5 hours lol, I’m from England and school sucks here so much, it’s so draining. Need at least 2 coffees to get me through the day and I’m only taking 3 courses.
