These are just my two cents on something I've seen before in my life:
Just because a video game has untraditional gameplay doesn't automatically mean it's bad. There's all that other stuff to consider: story, characters, music, worldbuilding. People really need to stop holding gameplay as the thing that decides whether a video game is bad or not.
EDIT: I'm talking about games that differ from the normal formula of their series, sorry if I confused anyone.

For me, every day is World Kindness Day.

Yes! For the love of cake somebody play Shadow Hearts. It's a great game, with an odd battle style, but it's FREAKING GREAT. ;-;

This.
I finished Death Stranding a month ago, ignoring the horrific reception. It was amazing. I haven't played a game like it since, and the majority of the dedicated subreddit agrees.
It's whatever you think, of course, but you're absolutely right. Gameplay =/= bad.

Is this a commonly held opinion? I feel like I often see folks praising games for unconventional gameplay as opposed to being just another generic shooter. Unless you're talking about outright bad gameplay, in which case yeah I do think it's kind of important. If you have to slog through broken, cumbersome, or highly tedious gameplay it absolutely lessens the experience. Unless that's the point of the game, that is.
Imo gameplay defines video games as a medium. It's what sets them apart! Things like story, music, artistic design, etc. are all important in modern games but they're not unique to the genre; while they can provide a way better experience they don't actually make the game itself good. Good music doesn't make a game with bad gameplay good any more than a good score makes a movie with bad acting good, if that makes sense. There are also plenty of games with terrible gameplay that are absolutely worth experiencing but imo that doesn't make them good games.
That's just my opinion though, feel free to disregard! [emoji=new friend size=1]

that's why I love Resident Evil 6 other than it was my first RE game so I didn't really know the gameplay of the others. sure it's not the horror that built the brand, but I found most of the characters enjoyable. Leon's story was a little disjointed and off from how connected the rest were but otherwise it was fine.

"Oh, I don't know, I was really hoping for a huge sign on the wall saying "Kryx's Legacy Clues Here!""

Someone aooreciate this persons dad level puns as this is exactly what I expected from this forum.
Also i feel like the first post is literally just a true statement. People dont usually disagree that a new concept being tried out isn't a bad thing? But there is every chance it just wont work or people wont like it.
