TOPIC | Any Equestrians?
1 2 3
Hey there! Im not a equestrian myself (never rode!), but I have a huge respect and admiration for those who do ride or take care of horses. I have for a long time wanted to volunteer at a local therapy horse stable (they help people with learning disabilities or other disabilities ), and I think I may submit a volunteer application soon to help with care and stable tasks and dip my toe into the world of the equine!

But anywho, feel free to chat or share photos!

if you're looking into volunteering, i'd totally recommend it!! i've volunteered a bit at a stable very similar to the one you mentioned, it's hard work but definitely worth it.

i also used to own a couple of horses myself!! i had two quarter horses, one of them was my quarter horse mare named skye, she was a trail horse and i used to ride her around the field and in the woods! the other one was a quarter horse gelding named cash, he was just a companion for skye, he wasn't trained to ride but i loved him a bunch, i used to teach him tricks and it was super cute! sadly i sold them back to their old barn because i felt like they needed someone who was able to put more into their care and training, i was struggling a lot with my depression at the time and wasn't able to put enough of my time and energy into them, so it was better for them to go to someone who could put more effort into it! i still love them a bunch though, and i was glad to have owned them for the couple of years i had them!

Thats great! Im really hoping volunteering will give me a outlet to be productive with my ADHD/anxiety as well as giving me the chance to learn about horses and horse care. Only iffy bit is transportation, but the organization only permits one day a week per volunteer so im sure it wouldnt be too difficult^^.

And aww, they both sound like such sweet ones. I understand the feeling of wanting your babies to go to a home more suited, I struggled a lot with that with my cats in the past. But hey, theres always a bright side to everything.

I have been summoned. I currently own a 23 year old paint horse, named Romeo. He is mostly retired, and only used for occasional rides at a walk or a trot (we do not canter, and we do not compete in traditional shows- due to a leg injury a few years back. he has since healed, however the injury put him at a greater risk for further injury in the future). sadly due to health problems on my end, I haven't seen him or been able to work with him in a long time, but before that, we did a lot of liberty work :) before being my horse, he was mostly used in 4h and speed events (he did everything from dressage to barrel racing), but since owning him hes learned to ride bitless, and is in the slow process of learning to ride bridleless in general (which is a work in progress mostly on my end- he rides off seat cues better anyways, but I'm not so great at giving leg cues lol). I also taught him to target the end of a pole or a stick, which has since allowed me to lead him around enclosed spaces tack free (I would not lead him outside of enclosed spaces without tack for safety reasons, but like, he could in theory). I am working on shaping that into being able to lunge him without a whip or lunge line, and in the future, I would like to teach him how to paint photos... because then he'd be a painting paint horse lol. Anyways, tl;dr - I have a senior horse who I mostly just train fun and useful tricks to, and we hang out and are just buddies. I’ve ridden once or twice, it was a real treat growing up. I’ve since stopped, due to a severe allergic reaction to all things furry ( rip) but I still love the sleek elegance of horses.

Been riding myself off and on for the past ten years, English and Western, trail riding, competitions, and arena work! Have a mustang of my own. Any questions you have, send em to me! It's a lot of hard work, but if you ever get the chance to volunteer o take lessons, do it.

What a sweetie, I have such a soft spot for piebalds (I think thats what his coat is called (?). And that'd be super ironic, a paint who can paint! I wish you guys luck in your training and thank you for replying! Also, I have no idea where you live, but it is gorgeous O.O

@BornofFlame

Oh no!! That really sucks >:(
But that sounds like it was fond experience! I too love the elegance of horses, especially that of ***** vanners.

@WillaTheWitch

That sounds awesome! Whats your favorite thing to do? Ive always wanted to go trail riding or even learn dressage, jumping kinda scares me haha. And oki dokie, ill keep you in mind! Im currently trying to figure out if I should wait to volunteer until my sister gets her liscense or see if my mom would be willing heh.

Jumping can be scary f you don't have a good seat, but otherwise, it's very exhilarating. I have fallen off over a few jumps though, and it's not something I do very often. Definitely need to practice but time is short with school and all that. Hopefully I will get in a few rides a week this summer instead of every few weeks.

Dressage is cool because it's so intense and you have to be able to control and guide your horse without looking like you're doing much. It requires tons of very minute cues and movements but once you start getting it right, it's incredibly satisfying.

Trail riding is probably my favorite because you get to go an explore with your buddy, and it is really fun in groups, though it can be nerve wracking if your horse spooks because you're not fenced in. Haven't fallen off outside of the fence yet, and certainly don't plan to.

Hmm, perhaps ill bite the bullet one day and start learning. And oh heck, at least you didnt get too hurt! Falling off is to be expected eventually tho I think haha, ive never met anyone who says they never have! And I understand, school is a complete pain in the tush. Hopefully you can start riding more soon though!

AhhH, ive always admired the intricacy of dressage but with my memory id probably forget cues as soon as ive learned them lmao. But im definetley willing to try nonetheless! I fortuneatly live close to where the Red Hills Horse Trials take place and they have a whole day dedicated to horses and their trainers showcasing their skills and collectiveness, and it could prove to be a good learning experience.

Ah yes, spooking is probably my biggest fear riding-wise tbh. But, the only way to gain experience is to expect the unexpected and know how to handle it.
And woohoo for no outside falls!

I mostly got bumps and bruises.. Nothing broken yet, so that's all good! Spooking sucks. You just gotta hold on tight. I've been on some horses who don't care about anything in the world, and I've been on some who spook at every sound and breeze.

Most of the cues become automatic, especially since you use most of them anyways outside of dressage. I have a terrible memory but it isn't too hard to bring it all together with a good instructor. Just requires a lot of time (and also a horse who knows what they are doing lol)
