TOPIC | Ever aware you're dreaming?
1 2
I've always kind of been fascinated by dreams mostly due to a lot of my sleep paralysis experiences when I was in my early teens ( I discovered high amounts of stress were linking to that state of dreaming in my case ).

Recently though, I've noticed I'm very aware of when I'm dreaming & about the times I start to dream. It's usually between 1am & 3am. The only reason I figured that out is the last few months I've been getting up at 3 in the morning for work, so I know for a fact I am interrupting my deep sleep state.

But it's just weird that along with it, I'm aware of those dreams. Like not in the state of lucid dreaming that I can control the outcome of said dream, but I know I'm asleep & dreaming & can recall details vividly even after I'm awake.

Funny enough I had a dream about work so vivid that I had to call in & ask if I had put something on order bc I remembered doing it in a dream.

Idk tho it's all just weirdly neat to me & I might start keeping a dream diary again.

My question to you guys tho! Do you lucid dream or are you very aware of your dreaming states? Ever experience sleep paralysis? What was that like for you?

When I’m dreaming I know I’m dreaming. It’s in the back of my mind, “I’m dreaming, this is a dream.”
It sometimes sucks the fun out of it.

@MyHartWillDrogon I can kind of agree with that, sometimes just knowing it's a dream is either less fun or sometimes sad. I am highly aware of dreams where I'm talking to old friends like they're still within distance of me or around, even family members that have passed as well.

Not being able to control that dream either, like some lucid dreamers, & just feeling like you're in the dream but they're kind of mundane dreams really is a let down sometimes adnbkasd.

I always know I'm dreaming, sometimes when I'm having a nightmare or just a very sad dream I go to sleep and I know that it will make me wake up in the real world.
It's probabily because I'm already waking up and I can control the last moments of my dream, but it's always been a very good method for me.

Sometimes I just happen to have beautiful dreams, like dreaming about my grandmother who's passed away 2 years ago. I always tell her "granny, but you're dead" and she usually replies "I know, we have little time then".
Or when I dream about a very good friend I've had a very bad fight with years ago, sometimes I dream she forgives me and I swear, it's the only kind of dream where I don't know I'm asleep, or at least I dearly hope I'm not. When I wake up it's always painful.

Even if you can't control it but are aware, I've always seen that as lucid dreaming, which I have happen quite a bit. The best to explain what I experience is that I know I'm dreaming and I can control myself and my actions but that doesn't mean those actions lead to the outputs I want. Like I try to control it but sometimes my brain just says no. lol

I think its nice though, I don't have recurring nightmares because I eventually realize its all a dream and I stop having the nightmare after that.

I am generally able to recognize that I'm in a dream pretty quickly because my dreams are always completely nonsensical. Also, when I visualize things, the images in my head are quite blurry and unclear compared to real life, so that's an obvious factor.

However, I never outright think "I'm dreaming," I sort of just... subconsciously recognize it and sit back and enjoy the show.

I'll have the occasional night where I am able to wake myself up to get out of a dream. I'll either be 1. really bored or 2. really scared. I had one instance of boredom as I child where I pinched myself in my dream to change the scenery. Lately I've had some bad dreams I know are dreams and I fight to wake myself up. It's pretty scary honestly because I will try to sit up and open my eyes, but get pulled back into sleep. I can only imagine what it would look like to someone else, me pulling myself up slightly and opening my eyes as much as I can. I don't usually succeed in waking up fully.

I'm very aware of the fact that I'm dreaming, and I've been able to control the dreams a few times. It comes in handy, majorly, when I'm having nightmares. I'm able to step back within the dream and think "its just a dream anyway, so this doesn't matter" which makes me much less stressed about it when I wake up. That's a bit of a lifesaver for me tbh!

I'm able to say "I should wake up now" in my dreams and wake myself up sometimes, too. Is that considered lucid, or?

Recently, yes. My dreams typically come with an intuition that "this is a dream", though I'm not usually very "conscious" of this. Sometimes I have actual true lucid dreams where I can more or less control it, and in many of them I wake up when I think "oh, this is a dream wake me up"
