I used to write Fanfiction all the time, primarily for Disney's Descendants and Harry Potter. I've been in a writing slump for a while and gave up fanfiction all together a while ago. I'm thinking of returning to finish a story and start a new one. But I'm antsy about committing to it again.
For those of you who read or write fanfiction, what are the things you like best about fanfiction in general? I need encouragement. XD

hello! I write miraculous ladybug fanfiction
for me, the best part about fanfiction is publishing it! It feels good to get it out there, even if not very many people read it ^-^
I love wings au's, coffee shop, college au's!

I haven’t read much fanfic since I gave up on Voltron, but I write a lot! I particularly enjoy fluff with my favourite pairings, and next-gen au stuff. I also like reversals of all kinds, heroes made villains and vice versa.
But mainly fluffy stuff. I just like seeing my OTPs happy.

I read, not write fanfic, so unfortunately I don't have any suggestions there. But my personal fanfic taste: I actually actively dislike AUs and crossovers a good 97% of the time. I feel like AUs often take away from the base interest of whatever media the fanfic is about- the universe given to you is so interesting, do something in it! But I love canon divergence (sorta depending on the severity- too much divergence can bring up my earlier issue of 'well, this just took away everything interesting in this universe'). I'm more for fluff than angst but don't mind the latter as long as it's more like.... hurt/comfort area stuff. Like Erniath said, I generally just like seeing my OTPs happy. just not in AUs ndgfngdsk

I mostly write fanfics and I read some as well! In fact, the only thing I write anymore is fanfiction...
First and foremost, is my advice to any writer: make sure you want to do it. I used to worry about how much people would read it, which killed my interest in writing it. That, in turn, killed the quality of the story as well, since I continued writing it anyway. Since I started writing for myself, I’ve been much likely to maintain both interest and quality.
Overall, most of the stuff I write falls under AUs. I try to keep canon consistent and present, although I can admit to going off the rails in some cases. As for what I like to read? My favorite fanfic series is written by a friend, who merges pure canon with headcanons beautifully. They give a touch of unique personality to every character, and a touch of world building as well. It definitely doesn’t lack amusing content and it almost always made me smile. If you’re up for it, I would aim for something similar—something that can cheer someone up if they’re feeling down. Close enough to canon that it’s believable, but still holding some unique traits.
Aaaaaand I’ve been told not to end off things with this, but that’s my two cents. Take of it as you will, of course, and I apologize if I rambled a bit.

I don't really write fanfics (at least I haven't started) but i read fanfics all the time, it's ridiculous. The thing i like best about fanfics? Seeing my otp together of course :') i love reading AUs if they're well written enough. My favorite kind of fanfics are the ones that aren't focusing too much on the romance, and usually the storyline leans more towards horror, thriller or mystery.
Also i need happy endings. Like, no matter how good the fanfic is, if it doesn't have a happy ending, i tend to stay away as far from it as possible. It'd hurt too damn much :'0

pleased to meet ya
I read fanfiction and tried my hand at writing it (but never finished nor posted).
In some fanfiction, specifically those focused on a ship, I like it when the pov changes between characters for each chapter. (Chapter one = person A pov, chapter 2 = person B, chapter 3 = A again and so on). It gives me a good feel for the characters and lets me get deeper into the ship, seeing it from both sides.
I also love banter. Whether the characters love each other or can't stand each other, snarky banter is epic. Roast each other like true friends or give so much hilarious back and forth that I wish you weren't enemies.

BornofFlame I agree. I do love the publishing aspect. I am unfortunately very obsessed with reviews because I need to know what people thought instead of them being ghost readers. XD It leads to problems where I stop writing because the lack of reviews is discouraging. :/

FOXHOUND I enjoy fluff a lot of the time, but I think it's easy to run out of steam by doing that. I usually like longer-ish stories so it's better to draw out the couple getting together. Considering I like the enemies to lovers trope, this is especially necessary. lol
@
PinkRose06 I enjoy diverging from canon a bit. Usually in Harry Potter, I just negate the major character deaths or rewrite year 7 like a lot of people do. I've had the same problem of being more interested in what people think than myself before and I guess that's one thing that killed it and put me off it. Perhaps instead of writing and publishing chapter by chapter, it would help me to stay a couple chapters ahead so there's less pressure. :/
@
StaticSeraph Hurt/Comfort is one of my favorites. I can usually swing it to satisfy both angst and fluff at times, which is fun.
@
Lunisolar I can't stand stories that end badly. It just feels like I'm back in English class reading the "classics" that all end terribly to teach us something. It's depressing, and that's not why I write. :) And I'm sure, like you, a happy ending is why most people read fanfiction - to get a better ending or just more of their favorite characters being happy.
@
Andalite I love banter. XD And switching POVs usually helps me keep it fresh. It's good to know people enjoy that.
