TOPIC | Fun facts about your language

Hey!
All those "say it in your language" threads got me curious about what yours have to offer) I'm multilingual, but I also study some languages (although I'm not very confident just yet). But I'll choose Russian, since that fact got me to start the thread =)

In Russia and nearby countries pancakes are a bit different from the USA and so on; they're far more flat and thin, so you certainly can't call them fluffy! The USA ones are sometimes called a word that roughly means "little pancakes", hehe) But that's not a language fact. What is one is that we use the word for expressing mild discomfort. I.e. when in English you say "oh man", you say "pancake" in Russian =) In theory that sounds cute... but when someone's REALLY upset, it isn't.

What about your languages?

I'm from Germany and we have ridicolously long words like "Aufmerksamkeitsdefizit-Hyperaktivitätsstörung" (that's our word for ADHD - but (thank god!) usually "ADHS" is used - anyways. Long words. You get my point xD). Besides that there is this funny thing: "umfahren" has two different meanings: 1) to drive around something/someone, so you don't harm anyone and everything is nice and safe and 2) just straight-up hit someone/something with your vehicle! xD I think it's super funny - and basically the logic of german in a nutshell. lol.

take a look at my skin shop pretty please? u.u
@MotherOfFlame

To clarify - is the logic of german the fact that there is no logic?

@Starrun
Hmm, kinda... But it's more like... "There is logic, but whoever came up with it must have been completely insane because why?!" xD

In Swedish, the word gift means both poison and marriage. It's a false friend but that doesn't stop anyone from joking about it.

[/quote] Very similar case with Norwegian. Gift means poison, and while our noun for marriage is actually ekteskap, the verb for to marry is gifte.

The word four sounds similar to death in Mandarin Chinese, which is why it is considered unlucky. Some buildings will even leave out the fourth floor.

This fact is a bit funny. If you mispronounce mom in Mandarin Chinese you risk calling your mother a horse or a horse your mother.

@Thatoneperson575

Oh! Is the mother-horse situation because of the tone thingy?

Hi! Lived in France and other parts of Europe!
The reason why French has so many letters that aren’t pronounced is because back ye old days when writers were paid for newspapers, most countries paid per word, which is why people like Charles Dickens have hellishly long stories.
Back to the story. The king of France said, “Screw that, I’m paying you guys PER LETTER.”
So French scribes stuffed as many letters as they could and didn’t pronounce most of them.

EDIT: Also lived in Italy.
Back before written language, the Italian people weren’t united under one language. There were hundreds of dialects, many of which are still spoken today. For example, the word for father in proper Italian is papa or padre, but in the area where I lived, the word for dad was Babbo.
Essentially, you had to learn a whole new language anytime you moved.
So there was this guy, Dante.
He was the first person to write a self insert fanfic for the catholic religion a book, The divine Comedy, in Italian. Italian became a spoken language.
The Divine Comedy not only was the first book in Italian, it was written in prose. When it’s be translated into other languages, translators struggle with either keeping it in prose or doing a direct translation.
